Abstract
Despite extensive studies conducted on the relationship between serum uric acid (UA) and bone mineral density (BMD), their association remains controversial. In this study, we investigated whether UA levels are independently associated with BMD in Chinese and American populations to elucidate their association. Herein, the data of 12,344 individuals (age > 20 years) from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2005-2018) and those of 768 individuals from the inpatient medical records and physical examination center systems of the Tertiary Class A Hospital (2021-2023) from China were included. The association between UA and BMD was analyzed by employing multivariate regression models with covariate adjustments. In addition, population description, stratified analysis, single-factor analysis, smooth-curve fitting, and threshold and saturation effect analyses were performed. After covariate adjustments, UA exhibited an association with BMD of the femur (β = 0.008, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.001-0.015, P = 0.02), femoral neck (β = 0.011, 95% CI 0.004-0.018, P = 0.002), and lumbar spine (β = 0.014, 95% CI 0.06-0.022, P < 0.001) in American subjects. Similarly, UA exhibited association with BMD of the femur (β = 0.079, 95% CI 0.042-0.117, P < 0.001), femoral neck (β = 0.171, 95% CI 0.121-0.22, P < 0.001), and lumbar spine (β = 0.052, 95% CI 0.007-0.097, P = 0.024) in Chinese subjects. Notably, the relationship between UA levels and BMD was nonlinear. The saturated utility values for determining the UA level with BMD of the femur and femoral neck using a two-stage linear regression model were 429.9 and 468 μmol/L, respectively, in the Chinese population. In the American population, the saturated utility values of UA level with BMD of the femur, femoral neck, and lumbar spine were 410.4, 410.4, and 452 μmol/L, respectively. Altogether, the present findings suggested a positive association between the UA levels and overall BMD in adults, implying that maintaining saturated UA levels can facilitate osteoporosis prevention.China Clinical Trials Registry: MR-51-23-051741. https://www.medicalresearch.org.cn/search/research/researchViewid=c0e5f868-eca9-4c68-af58-d73460c34028 .

Abstract
Purpose To explore the controversial relationship between uric acid (UA) levels and bone mineral density (BMD) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Patients and methods The PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases were searched using keywords and related words. Study quality was evaluated using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Studies retrieved in the literature search were systematically screened to extract information and data based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. RevMan version 5.3 and Stata Release 13.0 were used for statistical analysis. Results are expressed as mean difference (MD) and corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI). Heterogeneity was evaluated using the I2 and Q tests. Results This meta-analysis included 10 studies comprising 5,717 patients with T2DM. Study quality ranged from moderate to high. Results of comparative analyses were as follows: normal BMD versus (vs.) osteoporosis (OP) in females, MD -13.83 μmol/L (95% CI -41.69 to 14.03); I2 = 7%; P=0.30); normal BMD vs. osteopenia in females, MD -12.41 μmol/L (95% CI -37.81 to 12.99; I2 = 0%; P=0.92); normal BMD vs. abnormal BMD (osteopenia/OP), MD -23.82 μmol/L (95% CI -33.50 to -14.13; I2 = 0%; P=0.44); and osteopenia vs. OP, MD -22.35 μmol/L (95% CI -29.55 to -15.15; I2 = 5%; P=0.39). No publication bias was observed. Conclusion Compared with normal BMD, abnormal BMD (osteopenia/OP) was associated with lower UA levels. Compared with osteopenia, OP also showed lower UA.Systematic review registration.

Abstract
The repair of large bone defects due to trauma, disease, and infection can be exceptionally challenging in the elderly. Despite best clinical practice, bone regeneration within contemporary, surgically implanted synthetic scaffolds is often problematic, inconsistent, and insufficient where additional osteobiological support is required to restore bone. Emergent smart multifunctional biomaterials may drive important and dynamic cellular crosstalk that directly targets, signals, stimulates, and promotes an innate bone repair response following age-related biological decline and when in the presence of disease or infection. However, their role remains largely undetermined. By highlighting their mechanism/s and mode/s of action, this review spotlights smart technologies that favorably align in their conceivable ability to directly target and enhance bone repair and thus are highly promising for future discovery for use in the elderly. The four degrees of interactive scaffold smartness are presented, with a focus on bioactive, bioresponsive, and the yet-to-be-developed autonomous scaffold activity. Further, cell- and biomolecular-assisted approaches were excluded, allowing for contemporary examination of the capabilities, demands, vision, and future requisites of next-generation biomaterial-induced technologies only. Data strongly supports that smart scaffolds hold significant promise in the promotion of bone repair in patients with a reduced osteobiological response. Importantly, many techniques have yet to be tested in preclinical models of aging. Thus, greater clarity on their proficiency to counteract the many unresolved challenges within the scope of aging bone is highly warranted and is arguably the next frontier in the field. This review demonstrates that the use of multifunctional smart synthetic scaffolds with an engineered strategy to circumvent the biological insufficiencies associated with aging bone is a viable route for achieving next-generation therapeutic success in the elderly population.

Abstract
The prevalence of osteoporosis has drastically increased recently. It is not only the most frequent but is also a major global public health problem due to its high morbidity. There are many risk factors associated with osteoporosis were identified. However, most studies have used the traditional multiple linear regression (MLR) to explore their relationships. Recently, machine learning (Mach-L) has become a new modality for data analysis because it enables machine to learn from past data or experiences without being explicitly programmed and could capture nonlinear relationships better. These methods have the potential to outperform conventional MLR in disease prediction. In the present study, we enrolled a Chinese post-menopause cohort followed up for 4 years. The difference of T-score (δ-T score) was the dependent variable. Information such as demographic, biochemistry and life styles were the independent variables. Our goals were: (1) Compare the prediction accuracy between Mach-L and traditional MLR for δ-T score. (2) Rank the importance of risk factors (independent variables) for prediction of δ T-score. Totally, there were 1698 postmenopausal women were enrolled from MJ Health Database. Four different Mach-L methods namely, Random forest (RF), eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), Naïve Bayes (NB), and stochastic gradient boosting (SGB), to construct predictive models for predicting δ-BMD after four years follow-up. The dataset was then randomly divided into an 80% training dataset for model building and a 20% testing dataset for model testing. A 10-fold cross-validation technique for hyperparameter tuning was used. The model with the lowest root mean square error for the validation dataset was viewed as the best model for each ML method. The averaged metrics of the RF, SGB, NB, and XGBoost models were used to compare the model performance of the benchmark MLR model that used the same training and testing dataset as the Mach-L methods. We defined that the priority demonstrated in each model ranked 1 as the most critical risk factor and 22 as the last selected risk factor. For Pearson correlation, age, education, BMI, HDL-C, and TSH were positively and plasma calcium level, and baseline T-score were negatively correlated with δ-T score. All four Mach-L methods yielded lower prediction errors than the MLR method and were all convincing Mach-L models. From our results, it could be noted that education level is the most important factor for δ-T Score, followed by DBP, smoking, SBP, UA, age, and LDL-C. All four Mach-L outperformed traditional MLR. By using Mach-L, the most important six risk factors were selected which are, from the most important to the least: DBP, SBP, UA, education level, TG and sleeping hour. δ T score was positively related to SBP, education level, UA and TG and negatively related to DBP and sleeping hour in postmenopausal Chinese women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The associations between serum uric acid and osteoporosis or osteopenia remain controversial, and few studies have explored whether BMI acts as a mediators in the association between the SUA and OP/ osteopenia. OBJECTIVE To explore the relationship between serum uric acid and osteoporosis or osteopenia among US adults. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted to examine the association between serum uric acid and osteoporosis or osteopenia from four cycles of NHANES. Binary logistic regression models and restricted cubic spline models were used to evaluate the association between serum uric acid and osteoporosis or osteopenia, and interaction analysis was used to test the differences between subgroups. Mediation analysis was utilized to investigate whether BMI acts as a mediator in the association between SUA and OP/ osteopenia. RESULTS 12581 participants aged ≥ 18 years were included. A U-shape nonlinear relationship between SUA and osteoporosis or osteopenia in all people was found (P < 0.0001, P for nonlinear = 0.0287). There were significant interactions in age subgroups (P for interaction = 0.044), sex subgroups (P for interaction = 0.005), and BMI subgroups (P for interaction = 0.017). We further assessed the subgroups and found the optimal range of serum uric acid levels with a lower risk of osteoporosis or osteopenia was 357-535 µmol/L in males, 327-417 µmol/L in people aged ≥ 50 years, above 309 µmol/L in people aged < 50 years, 344-445 µmol/L in people with BMI ≥ 30, and above 308 µmol/L in people with BMI < 30. BMI fully mediated the association of SUA and OP/osteopenia, with a value of -0.0024(-0.0026--0.0021). These results were robust in sensitivity analyses. CONCLUSIONS A complicated relationship between SUA and bone health in different populations was observed. Maintaining SUA within a specific range may be beneficial to bone health. In addition, BMI may play an important role in the association between SUA and bone health, but considering the limitations of this study, further prospective research is required.

Abstract
Currently, the relationship between serum uric acid (SUA) and bone mineral density (BMD) in men remains controversial. This study aims to investigate the relationship between SUA and lumbar spine BMD in American men using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). A total of 6254 male subjects aged 12-80 years (mean age 35.52 ± 14.84 years) in the NHANES from 2011 to 2020 were analyzed. SUA was measured by DxC using the timed endpoint method, and lumbar spine BMD was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Multivariate linear regression models were used to explore the relationship between SUA and BMD by adjusting for age, race/Hispanic origin, drinking behavior, smoking behavior, physical activity, body mass index (BMI), poverty-to-income ratio (PIR), total protein, serum calcium, cholesterol, serum phosphorus, and blood urea nitrogen. After correcting for the above confounders, it was found that SUA was positively associated with lumbar spine BMD in the range of SUA < 5 mg/dL (β = 0.006 95% CI 0.003-0.009, P < 0.001), and BMD of individuals in the highest quartile of SUA was 0.020 g/cm2 higher than those in the lowest quartile of SUA (β = 0.020 95% CI 0.008-0.032, P = 0.003). This study showed that SUA was positively correlated with lumbar spine BMD in American men within a certain range. This gives clinicians some insight into how to monitor SUA levels to predict BMD levels during adolescence when bone is urgently needed for growth and development and during old age when bone loss is rapid.

Abstract
Serum uric acid (SUA) has been discovered to be associated with bone mineral density (BMD), but its relationship with trabecular bone score (TBS) remains unclear. Thus, the aim of our study was to investigate the association between SUA levels and TBS. Our study included 5895 individuals over 20 years old (3061 men and 2834 women) from NHANES 2005-2008. To analyze the association between SUA and TBS, multivariate linear regression models with covariate adjustments were applied. Furthermore, population description, stratified analysis, single factor analysis, smooth curve fitting, interaction analysis, and threshold effect and saturation effect analysis were also conducted. After adjusting for covariates, SUA showed a strong negative relationship with total TBS (β = 0.319; 95% CI 0.145-0.494; P < 0.001). The relationship between SUA levels and total TBS was found to be nonlinear, with inflection points at 4.8 mg/dL for the overall population, 4.2 mg/dL for women, and 5.7 mg/dL for non-Hispanic whites, indicating a saturation effect. Additionally, no interactions were found in any of the subgroups. Our study found a negative association between SUA and total TBS in adults. Maintaining SUA at a saturated level can benefit in preventing osteoporosis and fractures.

Abstract
Purpose There remains a lack of a machine learning (ML) model incorporating body composition to assess the risk of bone mineral density (BMD) decreases in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients. We aimed to use ML algorithms and the traditional multivariate logistic regression to establish prediction models for BMD decreases in T2DM patients over 50 years of age, and compare the performance of the two methods. Patients and Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted among 450 patients with T2DM from 1 August 2016 to 31 December 2022. The participants were divided into a normal BMD group and a decreased BMD group. Traditional multivariate logistic regression and six ML algorithms were selected to construct male and female models. Two nomograms were constructed to evaluate the risk of BMD decreases in the male and female T2DM patients, respectively. The ML models with the highest area under the curve (AUC) were compared with the traditional multivariate logistic regression models in terms of discriminant ability and clinical applicability. Results The optimal ML model was the extreme gradient boost (XGBoost) model. The AUCs of the traditional multivariate logistic regression and the XGBoost models were 0.722 and 0.800 in the male testing dataset, respectively, and 0.876 and 0.880 in the female testing dataset, respectively. The decision curve analysis results suggested that using the XGBoost models to predict the risk of BMD decreases obtained more net benefits compared with the traditional models in both sexes. Conclusion We preliminarily proved that the XGBoost models outperformed most other ML models in both sexes and achieved higher accuracy than traditional analyses. Due to the limited sample size in the study, it is necessary to validate our findings in larger prospective cohort studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The results of studies exploring the association between serum uric acid (SUA) and bone mineral density (BMD) have been controversial and inconsistent. We thus sought to explore whether SUA levels were independently associated with BMD in patients with osteoporosis (OP). METHODS This cross-sectional analysis was conducted using prospectively obtained data from the Affiliated Kunshan Hospital of Jiangsu University database pertaining to 1,249 OP patients that were hospitalized from January 2015 - March 2022. BMD was the outcome variable for this study, while baseline SUA levels were the exposure variable. Analyses were adjusted for a range of covariates including age, gender, body mass index (BMI) and a range of other baseline laboratory and clinical findings. RESULTS SUA levels and BMD were independently positively associated with one another in OP patients. Following adjustment for age, gender, BMI, blood urae nitrogen (BUN), and 25(OH)D levels, a 0.0286 g/cm2 (β, 0.0286; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.0193-0.0378, P < 0.000001) increase in BMD was observed per 100 μmol/L rise in SUA levels. A non-linear association between SUA and BMD was also observed for patients with a BMI < 24 kg/m2, with a SUA level inflection point at 296 μmol/L in the adjusted smoothed curve. CONCLUSIONS These analyses revealed SUA levels to be independently positively associated with BMD in OP patients, with an additional non-linear relationship between these two variables being evident for individuals of normal or low body weight. This suggests that SUA levels may exert a protective effect on BMD at concentrations below 296 μmol/L in normal- and low-weight OP patients, whereas SUA levels above this concentration were unrelated to BMD.

Association between serum uric acid level and bone mineral density at multiple skeletal sites in middle-aged and elderly men: a cross-sectional study of a healthy population in Taiwan. Abstract
This study revealed that serum uric acid (sUA) levels were not associated with bone mineral density (BMD) at different skeletal sites in middle-aged and elderly men, even adjusting for confounding variables. Nevertheless, a positive association was only found between sUA levels and BMD at all skeletal sites in the normal BMI group. INTRODUCTION Previous studies have reported an association between serum uric acid (sUA) levels and bone mineral density (BMD). However, their findings are controversial and limited to adult men in the general population. This study was aimed at examining the association between sUA levels and BMD at multiple skeletal sites in middle-aged and elderly men. METHODS A cross-sectional analysis of BMD at different skeletal sites and sUA levels was conducted on 918 men (age: 50.83 ± 7.95) using data from the Ditmanson Research Database. The participants were categorized into four groups based on quartiles of the sUA level, and BMD were assessed using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Multivariate linear regression models were utilized to investigate the association between sUA levels and BMD. Further, subgroup analyses were performed. RESULTS After adjusting for potential confounding factors, sUA as a continuous variable was significantly associated with BMD at the femoral neck only (β, 95% confidence interval: 0.007 [0.001-0.013]). However, in the categorical analysis, no significant differences were detected in terms of BMD at different skeletal sites across the different sUA quartile groups. Moreover, if the body mass index (BMI) was < 24 kg/m2 for each unit increase in sUA level, the spine, femoral neck, and total hip BMD increased by 0.014, 0.013, and 0.015 g/cm2, respectively. CONCLUSION The sUA level was not associated with BMD at different skeletal sites in middle-aged and elderly men. Nevertheless, a positive association was only found between sUA levels and BMD at all skeletal sites in the normal weight group.

Abstract
Background Elevated total alkaline phosphatase (T-ALP) levels are usually indicative of enhanced osteoblastic activity and bone conversion status and are thus considered as a key factor needed for fresh bone mineralization and synthesis. To date, there is no consistent conclusion on the association between the serum T-ALP levels and bone mineral density (BMD). Therefore, the present study focused on exploring the association of serum T-ALP with lumbar BMD among young adults. Methods The present cross-sectional study included 6,331 subjects included in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) during 2011–2016. The participants aged 20–40 years included 3,349 males and 2,982 females. Serum T-ALP was our main variable, lumbar BMD was our outcome variable, and additional variables were the possible impact modifiers. The relations were analysed by the trend study, weighted multiple linear regression models, smooth curve fitting, and stratified analyses. Results In a completely corrected multiple regression model, a negative association between serum T-ALP and lumbar BMD was discovered (β = -0.0007, 95% CI: –0.0009– –0.0005, P < 0.000001). After converting the continuous variable serum T-ALP into the categorical one, the significant negative association was still observed (P < 0.001), and in the subgroup and smooth curve fitting analyses, this negative correlation remained significant, too. Conclusions Our study results indicated that serum T-ALP was negatively associated with lumbar BMD among young adults. Serum T-ALP measurement in the near future might become an effective biomarker to diagnose and treat osteoporosis on time.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE While serum bone turnover markers (BTMs) and bone mineral density (BMD) have been confirmed as useable risk assessment tools for postmenopausal osteoporosis, the associations between BTMs and BMD changes are still ambiguous. The aim of this study was to explore the underlying associations between BTMs and BMD changes in postmenopausal women. METHODS Between January 2015 and October 2020, 135 postmenopausal women were retrospectively enrolled. They were divided into two groups according to lumbar spine (LS) 1-4 BMD change (1 y T-score minus baseline T-score, Group 1 [n = 36] < 0 and Group 2 [n = 99] ≥ 0). The changes of BTMs (N-terminal middle segment osteocalcin [N-MID], propeptide of type I procollagen [P1NP], and β-C-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen [β-CTX]) and their associations with LS 1-4 BMD change were analyzed. The biochemical indices and clinical parameters related with LS 1-4 BMD change were also evaluated. RESULTS The 1 year N-MID, P1NP, β-CTX and Phosphorus in Group 2 were lower than those in Group 1 (P < 0.05), their changes within 1 year were significantly negatively correlated with LS 1-4 BMD change (R2 = -0.200, P < 0.001; R2 = -0.230, P < 0.001; R2 = -0.186, P < 0.001; R2 = -0.044, P = 0.015; respectively). Except for the Phosphorus change (area under the curve [AUC] = 0.623), the changes of N-MID, P1NP, and β-CTX and their 1 year levels had similar AUC to diagnose the short-term LS 1-4 BMD change (AUC > 0.7 for all, with the AUC of 1 y P1NP being the largest at 0.803). Binary logistic regression analysis showed that the physical activity and drug intervention were the determinant factors for the LS 1-4 BMD change (odds ratio = 6.856, 95% confidence interval: 2.058-22.839, P = 0.002; odds ratio = 5.114, 95% confidence interval: 1.551-16.864, P = 0.007; respectively). CONCLUSIONS Declining N-MID, P1NP, β-CTX, and Phosphorus are associated with the short-term increase of LS 1-4 BMD within 1 year. Physical activity and drug intervention are factors significantly influencing the change of LS 1-4 BMD in postmenopausal women.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare bone mineral density (BMD) changes after 12 months of treatment with denosumab or bisphosphonates in postmenopausal women with severe osteoporosis after stopping teriparatide therapy. METHODS We retrospectively analyzed 140 postmenopausal women (mean age, 74.2 years) with severe osteoporosis who had been treated with teriparatide for 18 to 24 months at our outpatient clinic in a tertiary endocrine center between 2006 and 2015. After stopping teriparatide therapy, they continued treatment with a bisphosphonate (alendronate, risedronate, ibandronate, or zoledronic acid) or denosumab while receiving daily vitamin D and calcium. BMD at the lumbar spine (LS), total hip (TH), and femoral neck (FN) was measured by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry when teriparatide therapy was discontinued (baseline) and after 12 months of further treatment. Multivariate linear regression models were used to identify the predictors of BMD gain. RESULTS After stopping teriparatide therapy, 70 women continued treatment with bisphosphonates and 70 received denosumab. LS, but not TH or FN, BMD gain was significantly greater in the denosumab group than in the bisphosphonates group at 12 months. Multivariate analysis showed that BMD gain at the LS was negatively associated with bisphosphonate versus denosumab treatment and positively associated with baseline serum total procollagen type I N-terminal propeptide. BMD gains at the FN were predicted by higher baseline serum urate levels. BMD gains at the TH and FN were negatively associated with pretreatment BMD gains at the same site. CONCLUSION Twelve months after stopping teriparatide therapy, sequential denosumab treatment appeared to yield higher additional LS BMD gain on average compared with bisphosphonates treatment.

Abstract
The relationship between serum uric acid (UA) and bone mineral density (BMD) has been proposed by several researchers. However, there has been no consensus regarding the relationships among serum UA, diabetes, and BMD. The aim of this study is to investigate the association between UA, BMD, and at least osteopenia in type 2 diabetes patients.This research was a longitudinal study performed at Xiao-Tang-Shan Hospital in Beijing. Type 2 diabetes diagnosis was consistent with the WHO standard classification. Participants with osteopenia or osteoporosis documented by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry were defined as having "at least osteopenia." A generalized additive model and multivariable logistic regressions were performed to explore the relationship between serum UA and at least osteopenia. Receiver operating characteristic analysis was conducted. Propensity score matching was used to verify the correctness of the cutoff point.In total, 3476 type 2 diabetes patients free of any osteopenia-related diseases were recruited in 2012 and followed up to 2018. The general proportions of patients with at least osteopenia in 2018 was 16.46% (572/3476). Serum UA was negatively associated with BMD stratified by sex, age group, and BMI level. Setting the first quartile as the reference, the risk of at least osteopenia in the fourth quartile was significant among all patients (odds ratio [OR]: 0.75; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.57, 0.98) and specifically in females (OR: 0.79; 95% CI: 0.43, 0.97), patients aged over 50 years (OR: 0.79; 95% CI: 0.60, 0.97) and patients with a BMI greater than 25 (OR: 0.74; 95% CI: 0.47, 0.97). The optimal cutoff point for the serum UA level to distinguish at least osteopenia in diabetic patients was 395 μmol/L.Serum UA concentration is negatively associated with the occurrence of at least osteopenia in Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
Aims: Evidence linking serum uric acid (sUA) and bone mineral density (BMD) in adolescents is very limited. To the best of our knowledge, only one report has focused on the relationship between sUA and BMD in adolescents. Thus, this study aimed to determine the association between sUA and total BMD in adolescents aged 12-19 years. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on a sample composed of non-institutionalized US population from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Weighted multivariate linear regression models were used to evaluate the association between sUA and total BMD. Subgroup analyses were further performed. Results: sUA positively correlated with total BMD in the multiple regression model after adjusting for potential confounders. However, in the subgroup analyses stratified by sex, age, or race/ethnicity, the association between sUA and total BMD followed an inverted U-shaped curve in female adolescents, adolescents aged 16-19 years, and other race/ethnicity. Conclusions: Our results suggested that the correlation between sUA level and total BMD differed by sex. The increased sUA level would be beneficial to bone health in adolescents with low sUA levels, but for female adolescents, a higher sUA level (turning point, 3.9 mg/dL) may have an adverse effect on bone health.

Abstract
Postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP) is the most common metabolic bone illness among the elderly especially in postmenopausal women resulting from a reduction in bone mineral density, but there is no effective drug at present. The study was aimed at evaluating efficacy of osthole against osteoporosis using high-throughput metabolomics method. The blood samples for illustrating the pathological mechanism of PMOP and exploring the efficacy of osthole treatment (ST) were collected to perform metabolites and metabolic profiles and pathways analysis using ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-TOF/MS) and pattern recognition methods. In addition, backbone weight, the bone density, and some vital biochemical indexes were also detected. A total of 28 metabolites were identified as biomarkers for ovariectomized-osteoporosis model, and ST could significantly regulate 19 of them including lysine, linoleic acid, 3-hydroxybutyric acid, prostaglandin F2a, taurocholic acid, LysoPC(15:0), l-carnitine, glucose, arginine, citric acid, corticosterone, ornithine, tryptophan, arachidonic acid, Cer(d18:0/18:0), glutamine, uric acid, 8-HETE, estriol, which mainly related with 13 metabolic pathways, such as linoleic acid metabolism, starch, and sucrose metabolism, arachidonic acid metabolism, alanine, aspartate and glutamate metabolism, arginine and proline metabolism, citrate cycle (TCA cycle), and arginine biosynthesis. The ovariectomized model (OVX) rats display a significant decrease bone density, TGF-β1, NO, and NOS level, and a significant increase bone weight, IL-6, TNF-α, and Ca 2+ level. These parameters in the ST rats were evidently improved as compared to the OVX group. ST effectively mitigated ovariectomy-induced osteoporosis in rats by affecting endogenous metabolite-related metabolic mechanism and showed the natural alternative with potential for the treatment of PMOP.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Uric acid has been found to be potentially protective in bone metabolism. We investigated the relationship between serum uric acid (sUA) and lumbar bone mineral density (BMD) among 4156 participants aged 60 years and over from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). METHODS To estimate the association between sUA and lumbar BMD, multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted. Fitted smoothing curves and generalized additive models were also performed. RESULTS We found sUA positively correlated with lumbar BMD after adjusting for other confounders. On subgroup analyses, stratified by sex and race/ethnicity, the positive correlation of sUA with lumbar BMD remained in both men and women, as well as in whites and Mexican Americans, but not in blacks. In blacks, the association of sUA with lumbar BMD was an inverted U-shaped curve (inflection point: 7.5 mg/dL). CONCLUSIONS Our study revealed a positive relationship between sUA and lumbar BMD among most old adults. This association followed an inverted U-shaped curve among blacks.
