Applications of artificial intelligence-machine learning for detection of stress: a critical overview

Psychological distress is a major contributor to human physiology and pathophysiology, and it has been linked to several conditions, such as auto-immune diseases, metabolic syndrome, sleep disorders, and suicidal thoughts and inclination. Therefore, early detection and management of chronic stress is crucial for the prevention of several diseases. Artificial intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) have promoted a paradigm shift in several areas of biomedicine including diagnosis, monitoring, and prognosis of disease. Here, our review aims to present some of the AI and ML applications for solving biomedical issues related to psychological stress. We provide several lines of evidence from previous studies highlighting that AI and ML have been able to predict stress and detect the brain normal states vs. abnormal states (notably, in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)) with accuracy around 90%. Of note, AI/ML-driven technology applied to identify ubiquitously present stress exposure may not reach its full potential, unless future analytics focus on detecting prolonged distress through such technology instead of merely assessing stress exposure. Moving forward, we propose that a new subcategory of AI methods called Swarm Intelligence (SI) can be used towards detecting stress and PTSD. SI involves ensemble learning techniques to efficiently solve a complex problem, such as stress detection, and it offers particular strength in clinical settings, such as privacy preservation. We posit that AI and ML approaches will be beneficial for the medical and patient community when applied to predict and assess stress levels. Last, we encourage additional research to bring AI and ML into the standard clinical practice for diagnostics in the not-too-distant future.

Content and sentiment surveillance (CSI): A critical component for modeling modern epidemics

Comprehensive surveillance systems are the key to provide accurate data for effective modeling. Traditional symptom-based case surveillance has been joined with recent genomic, serologic, and environment surveillance to provide more integrated disease surveillance systems. A major gap in comprehensive disease surveillance is to accurately monitor potential population behavioral changes in real-time. Population-wide behaviors such as compliance with various interventions and vaccination acceptance significantly influence and drive the overall epidemic dynamics in the society. Original infoveillance utilizes online query data (e.g., Google and Wikipedia search of a specific content topic such as an epidemic) and later focuses on large volumes of online discourse data about the from social media platforms and further augments epidemic modeling. It mainly uses number of posts to approximate public awareness of the disease, and further compares with observed epidemic dynamics for better projection. The current COVID-19 pandemic shows that there is an urgency to further harness the rich, detailed content and sentiment information, which can provide more accurate and granular information on public awareness and perceptions toward multiple aspects of the disease, especially various interventions. In this perspective paper, we describe a novel conceptual analytical framework of content and sentiment infoveillance (CSI) and integration with epidemic modeling. This CSI framework includes data retrieval and pre-processing; information extraction via natural language processing to identify and quantify detailed time, location, content, and sentiment information; and integrating infoveillance with common epidemic modeling techniques of both mechanistic and data-driven methods. CSI complements and significantly enhances current epidemic models for more informed decision by integrating behavioral aspects from detailed, instantaneous infoveillance from massive social media data.

Sentiment Analysis on Twitter: Role of Healthcare Professionals in the Global Conversation during the AstraZeneca Vaccine Suspension

The vaccines against COVID-19 arrived in Spain at the end of 2020 along with vaccination campaigns which were not free of controversy. The debate was fueled by the adverse effects following the administration of the AstraZeneca-Oxford (AZ) vaccine in some European countries, eventually leading to its temporary suspension as a precautionary measure. In the present study, we analyze the healthcare professionals' conversations, sentiment, polarity, and intensity on social media during two periods in 2021: the one closest to the suspension of the AZ vaccine and the same time frame 30 days later. We also analyzed whether there were differences between Spain and the rest of the world. Results: The negative sentiment ratio was higher (U = 87; p = 0.048) in Spain in March (Med = 0.396), as well as the daily intensity (U = 86; p = 0.044; Med = 0.440). The opposite happened with polarity (U = 86; p = 0.044), which was higher in the rest of the world (Med = -0.264). Conclusions: There was a general increase in messages and interactions between March and April. In Spain, there was a higher incidence of negative messages and intensity compared to the rest of the world during the March period that disappeared in April. Finally, it was found that the dissemination of messages linked to negative emotions towards vaccines against COVID-19 from healthcare professionals contributed to a negative approach to primary prevention campaigns in the middle of the pandemic.

Supporting Vaccination on TikTok During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Vaccine Beliefs, Emotions, and Comments

TikTok has been one of the most important social media platforms where pandemic-related information converged and has been disseminated. However, how vaccination-related visual content, particularly pro-vaccine videos, influences audiences remains unclear. Using Betsch et al.’s 5C model and Ekman’s basic emotion model, we identified 200 trending videos under the hashtag #vaccine on TikTok, and examined the types of vaccine-related beliefs and emotions expressed in videos and the relationship between beliefs, emotions, and supportive comments. Confidence and joy were the most frequently expressed belief and emotion, respectively; confidence (B = 14.84, P < 0.05), surprise (B = 11.29, P < 0.05), and sadness (B = 37.49, P < 0.01) predicted the number of supportive comments. This study expands the 5C framework of vaccine hesitancy into the analysis of pro-vaccine content on social media and offers detailed insights into the specific type of beliefs and emotions and their effects. Practical implications regarding how to address vaccine hesitancy are discussed.
