Lung Lesion Detection in CT Scan Images Using the Fuzzy Local Information Cluster Means (FLICM) Automatic Segmentation Algorithm and Back Propagation Network Classification

Biomedical image retrieval using adaptive neuro-fuzzy optimized classifier system

The quantity of scientific images associated with patient care has increased markedly in recent years due to the rapid development of hospitals and research facilities. Every hospital generates more medical photographs, resulting in more than 10 GB of data per day being produced by a single image appliance. Software is used extensively to scan and locate diagnostic photographs to identify patient's precise information, which can be valuable for medical science research and advancement. An image recovery system is used to meet this need. This paper suggests an optimized classifier framework focused on a hybrid adaptive neuro-fuzzy approach to accomplish this goal. In the user query, similarity measurement, and the image content, fuzzy sets represent the vagueness that occurs in such data sets. The optimized classifying method 'hybrid adaptive neuro-fuzzy is enhanced with the improved cuckoo search optimization. Score values are determined by utilizing the linear discriminant analysis (LDA) of such classified images. The preliminary findings indicate that the proposed approach can be more reliable and effective at estimation than can existing approaches.

Back Propagation Neural Network-Based Magnetic Resonance Imaging Image Features in Treating Intestinal Obstruction in Digestive Tract Diseases with Chengqi Decoction

This study was to explore the adoption effect of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) image features based on back propagation neural network (BPNN) in evaluating the curative effect of Chengqi Decoction (CD) for intestinal obstruction (ileus), so as to evaluate the clinical adoption value of this algorithm. Ninety patients with ileus were recruited, and the patients were treated with CD and underwent MRI scans of the lower abdomen. A BPNN model was fabricated and applied to segment the MRI images of patients and identify the lesion. As a result, when the overlap step was 16 and the block size was 32 × 32, the running time of the BPNN algorithm was the shortest. The segmentation accuracy was the highest if there were two hidden layer (HL) nodes, reaching 97.3%. The recognition rates of small intestinal stromal tumor (SIST), colon cancer, adhesive ileus, and volvulus of MRI images segmented by the algorithm were 91.5%, 88.33%, 90.3%, and 88.9%, respectively, which were greatly superior to those of manual interpretation (P < 0.05). After the intervention of CD, the percentages of patients with ileus that were cured, markedly effective, effective, and ineffective were 65.38%, 23.16%, 5.38%, and 6.08%, respectively. The cure rate after intervention of CD (65.38%) was much higher in contrast to that before intervention (13.25%) (P < 0.05). In short, CD showed a good therapeutic effect on ileus and can effectively improve the prognosis of patients. In addition, MRI images based on BPNN showed a good diagnostic effect on ileus, and it was worth applying to clinical diagnosis.

Self-supervised deep learning model for COVID-19 lung CT image segmentation highlighting putative causal relationship among age, underlying disease and COVID-19

Background

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is very contagious. Cases appear faster than the available Polymerase Chain Reaction test kits in many countries. Recently, lung computerized tomography (CT) has been used as an auxiliary COVID-19 testing approach. Automatic analysis of the lung CT images is needed to increase the diagnostic efficiency and release the human participant. Deep learning is successful in automatically solving computer vision problems. Thus, it can be introduced to the automatic and rapid COVID-19 CT diagnosis. Many advanced deep learning-based computer vison techniques were developed to increase the model performance but have not been introduced to medical image analysis.

Methods

In this study, we propose a self-supervised two-stage deep learning model to segment COVID-19 lesions (ground-glass opacity and consolidation) from chest CT images to support rapid COVID-19 diagnosis. The proposed deep learning model integrates several advanced computer vision techniques such as generative adversarial image inpainting, focal loss, and lookahead optimizer. Two real-life datasets were used to evaluate the model’s performance compared to the previous related works. To explore the clinical and biological mechanism of the predicted lesion segments, we extract some engineered features from the predicted lung lesions. We evaluate their mediation effects on the relationship of age with COVID-19 severity, as well as the relationship of underlying diseases with COVID-19 severity using statistic mediation analysis.

Results

The best overall F1 score is observed in the proposed self-supervised two-stage segmentation model (0.63) compared to the two related baseline models (0.55, 0.49). We also identified several CT image phenotypes that mediate the potential causal relationship between underlying diseases with COVID-19 severity as well as the potential causal relationship between age with COVID-19 severity.

Conclusions

This work contributes a promising COVID-19 lung CT image segmentation model and provides predicted lesion segments with potential clinical interpretability. The model could automatically segment the COVID-19 lesions from the raw CT images with higher accuracy than related works. The features of these lesions are associated with COVID-19 severity through mediating the known causal of the COVID-19 severity (age and underlying diseases).
