Abnormal tooth maturation associated with port wine stains

OBJECTIVE

This study aims to evaluate the potential impact of port wine stains on the development of permanent teeth in mixed dentition and provide insights for managing tooth abnormalities in patients with port wine stains.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A retrospective analysis was conducted on 21 patients with mixed dentition and unilateral maxillary port wine stains. Two researchers concurrently utilized Nolla Analysis to assess the developmental stage of bilateral maxillary and permanent mandibular teeth based on panoramic radiographs. The cumulative developmental values of upper and lower permanent teeth on both sides were calculated, and a comparison was made between the developmental stages of the upper and lower jaws.

RESULTS

Port wine stains can influence the maturity of permanent upper teeth, within the unilateral maxillary port wine stains range, with an early developmental completion observed on the affected side compared to the unaffected side. While the developmental stages of the lower teeth on both sides showed similarities.

CONCLUSIONS

Port wine stains can accelerate the maturity of teeth on the affected side, leading to alterations in the order of tooth eruption and subsequent abnormal occlusion in children with mixed dentition. These findings provide a basis for developing appropriate management strategies for addressing tooth abnormalities in patients with port wine stains.

Tooth agenesis: An overview of diagnosis, aetiology and management

Patients with one or more developmentally absent teeth are routinely encountered in dental practice. Tooth agenesis can be associated with significant functional, aesthetic and psycho-social problems. The present article provides an overview of the prevalence and aetiology of tooth agenesis, as well as the condition's clinical characteristics and management options with reference to the evidence base. A timely diagnosis can facilitate the appropriate planning and management which might not be straightforward, and patient care will likely require multi- and inter-disciplinary input. It is critical that dental care practitioners are aware of the clinical characteristics and management options for tooth agenesis.

Dental Maturation in Two Groups of Children Born in 1969-1973 and 2005-2010

This study compared differences in dental maturation and dental age in Scandinavian children born in 1969-1973 and 2005-2010. The study was based on 130 ethnic Scandinavian children, who were divided in two groups corresponding to the time periods and matched on age and sex. Each group consisted of 65 children (30 girls, 35 boys, mean age 9.29 years and 9.30 years, respectively). Dental maturation was analysed by orthopantomographs, in accordance with Demirjian and Haavikko. Dental age was analysed by orthopantomographs in accordance with Demirjian. Boys and girls were analysed separately by linear regression analysis adjusted for age. For the children born in 2005-2010, teeth matured significantly earlier (Demirjian: 0.21 maturities, CI 95% 0.11-0.31, p < 0.000. Haavikko: maxilla: 0.39 maturities, CI 95% 0.21-0.56, p < 0.000. Mandible: 0.42 maturities, CI 95% 0.17-0.67, p = 0.001) and the dental age was significantly higher (Demirjian: 6.04 months, CI 95% 0.23-0.77, p < 0.000) in comparison with the children born in 1969-1973. In conclusion, the teeth of Scandinavian children born 2005-2010 matured significantly earlier than those of children born in 1969-1973. The results may prove valuable in forensic dentistry, pedodontics, and for the timing of pedodontic and orthodontic treatment.

Evaluation of the Relationship between the Weight and Height Percentiles and the Sequence and Chronology of Eruption in Permanent Dentition

The standard eruption of the permanent dentition in growing patients is influenced by multiple environmental factors. The objective of this research was to study the relationship between height and weight percentiles and the eruption of the permanent dentition. The design of the study was transversal based on the review of the clinical history, visual dental inspection, weight and height indicators, and their respective percentiles in patients in the mixed and definitive dentition stage. The descriptive and comparative analysis of the data was carried out with the statistical software R version 4.1.1. The sample size was 725 participants. The mean age of eruption of the first tooth was 8.0. The eruption sequence in the upper arch was first molar, central and lateral incisor, first premolar, canine, second premolar, and second molar. In the lower arch, the eruption sequence was: central incisor, first molar, lateral incisor, canine, first and second premolar, and second molar. The most frequent weight percentile was P50-97 (50.34%) and height P3-50 (53.38%). Weight (0.0129; 0.0426; 0.0495; 0.000166) and height (0.00768; 0.00473; 0.00927; 10⁻⁵) variables significantly influenced dental eruption. The factor that most influences the eruption of the permanent dentition is the height percentile.

Eruption Pattern of Permanent Canines and Premolars in Polish Children

Eruption is a complex and dynamic process determined by both genetic and epigenetic factors. This process involves a number of changes in the tissues surrounding the tooth and in tooth morphology. The aim of this study was to analyze the eruption sequence of permanent canines and premolars on the basis of pantomographic images. The study material consisted of 300 digital pantomographic images of children in the developmental period. The study group consisted of 165 boys and 135 girls. Images of patients of Polish nationality, aged 6–10 years, without diagnosed systemic diseases and local disorders were used in the study. Results: The study has shown that the most common pattern of tooth eruption in the lateral zones is type A positioning of the lateral teeth, which is 4-5-3. This pattern is characteristic of both girls and boys. This pattern also occurs most frequently in the maxilla in both boys and girls. In the mandible, on the contrary, two patterns of lateral tooth eruption were predominant. In girls, types A and E/4-5-3 and 3-4-5/occurred in the mandible, while in boys, types A and C/4-5-3 and 5-4-3/were observed in the mandible. The process of tooth eruption is a recognized measure of a child’s physical development, and pantomographic images are an effective and common diagnostic tool.

Symptoms of the Eruption of Permanent Teeth

This prospective study examined a population of 520 urban and rural children aged 5 to 9 years. Every 2−4 weeks, the clinical symptoms accompanying primary tooth replacement such as a cough, a runny nose, pain, and body temperature were assessed in each child’s medical records. The authors were able to show in a statistically significant manner that the frequency, time, and type of cough were strongly related to the type of erupting teeth (p < 0.001 for each relationship). A cough dependent on the type of erupting teeth was observed in 86% to 92% of the examined children, with a morning bronchial cough being connected with an eruption of the lower teeth, and an eruption of the upper teeth producing an all-day pharyngeal cough caused by mucus secretions dripping down the back of the throat. A statistically significant relationship was also confirmed between the type of erupting teeth and the incidence of a runny nose (p < 0.001), the frequency of a runny nose (p < 0.001), and the time when runny nose symptoms occurred (p < 0.001). This study shows that the period when primary dentition is replaced with permanent teeth in children is characterized by a physiological cough and a runny nose.
