Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the weight of imaging and imaging specialists (i.e., affiliated to a radiology/nuclear medicine department) in publications in non-imaging journals. METHODS All articles indexed in English on the Embase database between 1989 and 2019 were extracted. The number and affiliation of authors were determined. A naive Bayesian classifier algorithm was trained to classify abstracts as "imaging" or "non-imaging." The main outcome was the number and position of imaging specialists in the authorship of imaging articles published in non-imaging journals. Analyses per medical specialties and per journal impact factor (IF) were performed. RESULTS A total of 15,787,825 articles were included with 968,259 (6%) "imaging" articles. The proportion of imaging articles increased over time (+ 370%), quicker than the overall academic output. The proportion of imaging specialist among authors grew from 0.58% in 1989-1994 to 1.54% in 2015-2019. About 20% of imaging articles had ≥ 1 imaging specialist among authors. The proportion of imaging articles decreased with the IF (7.3% for IF 0-2.5 vs. 5.1% for IF > 10, p < 0.001), but the proportion of imaging specialist authors in imaging papers with ≥ 1 imaging specialist author increased with the IF (40% for IF 0-2.5, 53% for IF > 10, p < 0.001). There was significant variability across medical specialties. CONCLUSIONS The weight of imaging articles and imaging specialist among authors in non-imaging journals has increased over time but remains limited. Most of the authors of imaging publications are not imaging specialists. Imaging specialists among authors in imaging papers are associated with a greater IF. KEY POINTS • The proportion of imaging specialist authors in non-imaging journals, though small, has increased significantly. • Marked differences are observed according to medical specialties and the reputation/impact factor of the journal. • Collaboration between imaging specialists and non-specialists is associated with publication in higher impact journals.

Abstract
Objective To analyze the characteristics and trends of scientific publications on thyroid ultrasound (US) from 2001 to 2020, specifically examining the differences among disciplines. Materials and Methods The MEDLINE database was searched for scientific articles on thyroid US published between 2001 and 2020 using the PubMed online service. The evaluated parameters included year of publication, type of document, topic, funding, first author's specialty, journal name, subject category, impact factor, and quartile ranking of the publishing journal, country, and language. Relationships between the first author's specialty (radiology, internal medicine, surgery, otorhinolaryngology, and miscellaneous) and other parameters were analyzed. Results A total of 2917 thyroid US publications were published between 2001 and 2020, which followed an exponential growth pattern, with an annual growth rate of 11.6%. Radiology produced the most publications (n = 1290, 44.2%), followed by internal medicine (n = 716, 24.5%), surgery (n = 409, 14.0%), and otorhinolaryngology (n = 171, 5.9%). Otorhinolaryngology and internal medicine published significantly more case reports than radiology (p < 0.001, each). Radiology published a significantly higher proportion of publications on imaging diagnosis (p < 0.001 for all) and a significantly lower proportion of publications on biopsy (p < 0.001 for all) than the other disciplines. Publications produced by radiology authors were less frequently published in Q1 journals than those from other disciplines (p < 0.005 for internal medicine and miscellaneous disciplines and < 0.01 for surgery and otorhinolaryngology). China contributed the greatest number of publications (n = 622, 21.3%), followed by South Korea (n = 478, 16.4%) and the United States (n = 468, 16.0%). Conclusion Radiology produced the most publications for thyroid US than any other discipline. Radiology authors published more notably on imaging diagnosis compared to other topics and in journals with lower impact factors compared to authors in other disciplines.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Many articles that are relevant to patient care but published in radiology journals may escape notice by clinicians. We sought to determine how often the 20 most prolific American Journal of Neuroradiology (AJNR) authors from 2013 to 2017 published in clinical journals and the extent to which their articles were disseminated into the clinical literature. MATERIALS AND METHODS We counted all authors' first- or senior-authored articles in the AJNR from 2013 to 2017 to identify the 20 most prolific authors in AJNR. We searched for these 20 authors' total articles from 2013 to 2017 to determine which were published in radiology or clinical journals and the number of citations received from radiology and clinical journals. Authors were sorted into quartiles according to these metrics, and other descriptive statistics were performed. RESULTS The top 20 AJNR authors contributed to 1463 articles during 5 years, including 711 (48.6%) in radiology and 752 (51.4%) in clinical journals. These articles were cited 15,857 times, including 4659 (29.3%) by articles in radiology journals. The more prolific authors published in clinical journals more often (Spearman ρ = 0.65, P = .002) and were cited more (ρ = 0.42, P = .07). Articles published in clinical journals were cited more often (mean, 12.3 clinical, 9.3 radiology general versus 8.7 in AJNR), and whether published in radiology or clinical journals, they were cited more frequently by clinical journals. CONCLUSIONS Regardless of where it is published, radiology research is disseminating into the clinical realm. Radiology articles published in clinical journals are cited more often than those published in radiology journals.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to identify and characterize the 100 top-cited articles in pulmonary imaging. MATERIALS AND METHODS From the database of Journal Citation Reports, 274 journals whose scope included pulmonary imaging were selected. The Web of Science search tools were then used to identify the 100 top-cited articles in the subject of pulmonary imaging published in these journals. The parameters used to analyze the characteristics of the 100 top-cited articles were journal (including subject category and impact factor), publication year, number of citations and annual citations, department and institution of authors, country of origin, article type, imaging technique, and topic. RESULTS The 100 top-cited articles in pulmonary imaging were published between 1953 and 2012, with 43 published between 2000 and 2009. Citations ranged from 199 to 1447, and annual citations ranged from 5.1 to 314. The majority of articles were published in radiology or imaging journals (n=64), originated in the United States (n=49), were original articles (n=87), used computed tomography (n=66), and were based on the topic of pulmonary thromboembolism (n=18). Department of Radiology, Mayo Clinic (n=7), and Department of Radiology, University of British Columbia and Vancouver General Hospital (n=7), were the leading institutions, and Müller NL (n=11) was the most prolific author. CONCLUSIONS Our study lists the 100 top-cited articles in pulmonary imaging, provides an insight into historical developments, and allows for recognition of advances in this field.

Abstract
The purpose of our study was to identify and characterize the 100 most-cited articles in neuroimaging. Based on the database of Journal Citation Reports, we selected 669 journals that were considered as potential outlets for neuroimaging articles. The Web of Science search tools were used to identify the 100 most-cited articles relevant to neuroimaging within the selected journals. The following information was recorded for each article: publication year, journal, category and impact factor of journal, number of citations, number of annual citations, authorship, department, institution, country, article type, imaging technique used, and topic. The 100 most-cited articles in neuroimaging were published between 1980 and 2012, with 1995-2004 producing 69 articles. Citations ranged from 4384 to 673 and annual citations ranged from 313.1 to 24.9. The majority of articles were published in radiology/imaging journals (n=75), originated in the United States (n=58), were original articles (n=63), used MRI as imaging modality (n=85), and dealt with imaging technique (n=45). The Oxford Centre for Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the Brain at John Radcliffe Hospital (n=10) was the leading institutions and Karl J. Friston (n=11) was the most prolific author. Our study presents a detailed list and an analysis of the 100 most-cited articles in the field of neuroimaging, which provides an insight into historical developments and allows for recognition of the important advances in this field.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The growing number of subspecialties within neuroradiology compete for pages in neuroradiology journals. We performed a bibliometric analysis of the American Journal of Neuroradiology to identify the virtual Impact Factor of different journal subsections and article topics. MATERIALS AND METHODS Original Research and Review Articles published in American Journal of Neuroradiology during 2010-2012 were evaluated. The journal section for each article was recorded, and the number of citations was evaluated by using the Web of Science database. Numbers of citations within the first 2 years after publication were evaluated, normalized to the 2013 journal Impact Factor (for American Journal of Neuroradiology, 3.675), and used to calculate a virtual Impact Factor for different journal subsections. RESULTS One thousand forty-nine Original Research and Review Articles were published during this time, which obtained an average of 6.59 citations each within their first 2 years after publication; 91.8% of articles obtained at least 1 citation. Expedited Publications had the greatest number of citations, averaging 43.7 citations each (virtual Impact Factor, 24.39), followed by Review Articles averaging 9.39 citations each (virtual Impact Factor 5.23). Virtual Impact Factors for other sections were the following: Interventional, 4.54; Brain, 3.70; Pediatrics, 2.91; Functional, 2.74; Head & Neck, 2.24; and Spine, 1.86. Virtual Impact Factors for article topics were the following: interventional, 4.75; functional/advanced, 3.79; brain, 3.66; pediatrics, 2.99; head and neck, 2.46; and spine, 2.32. CONCLUSIONS Citation patterns of Original Research and Review Articles in American Journal of Neuroradiology varied widely on the basis of subsections. Understanding the citation patterns of specific topics and subsections of a journal may aid authors and editors in evaluating the appropriate balance among various topics and allow authors to determine whether their articles are being cited at a level expected for similar ones in a journal.

Abstract
Introduction: Bibliometric analysis is a quantitative method that can evaluate publications related to a specific topic. Methods: A PubMed database search was conducted from 2003 to 2012 using the search term “carotid” AND “stenos*” as a part of the title or abstract. Results: A total of 1590 articles were published in 329 different journals. A total of 751 (47.2%) publications were original articles, 1501 (94.4%) were written in English, 153 (9.6%) received funding, 584 (36.7%) were published by the United States, and 673 (42.3%) resulted from multidisciplinary collaboration. Of the original articles, 538 (71.6%) had retrospective design and 275 (36.6%) had sample size of <50. Vascular surgery departments produced the most articles (n = 339, 21.3%), followed by radiology (n = 270, 17.0%), cardiology (n = 260, 16.4%), neurosurgery (n = 198, 12.5%), and neurology (n = 196, 12.3%). Five major departments published only a small portion (5.1%-26.5%) of articles in their own specialty journals. Conclusion: The publication in journals across disciplines and multidisciplinary collaboration are 2 peculiar characteristics of research in this topic.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the publication rate of scientific abstracts orally presented at the annual meeting of the French Society of Radiology (FSR), and to identify factors associated with publication. MATERIAL AND METHODS Abstracts were selected from the books of abstracts of the 2008-2010 annual meetings of the FSR. For each abstract, country of origin, diagnostic/interventional radiology, imaging techniques (plain radiography, angiography, ultrasound [US], computed tomography [CT], magnetic resonance imaging [MRI]), human/experimental study, retrospective/prospective design, number of subjects, oncologic study or not were noted. Publications were searched in Medline-indexed journals and factors associated analyzed by multivariate analysis. RESULTS Seven hundred and forty-four abstracts lead to 298 publications (publication rate 40%). Most abstracts reported retrospective studies (61%), in humans (94%), diagnostic imaging (85%), from European authors (90%), and oncology (27%). Median number of subject was 39 (19-87). Main imaging techniques were MRI, CT, US (46%, 29%, 21%). Publications were mostly in English (89%), in radiological journals (72%), with a mean 3.5±3.7 impact factor. Publication was associated with a prospective design (OR=1.80), a submission from Europe (OR=1.71), angiography (OR=2.44), and oncology (OR=1.81). CONCLUSION The annual meeting of the FSR is in French, but the rate of publication of presented abstracts is high, mostly in English in reputable journals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Neurointerventional therapy of cerebrovascular disease is a greatly expanding field across many specialty disciplines. The goal of this study was to analyze the characteristics and trends of scientific publications that focused on neurointervention during the past decade. MATERIALS AND METHODS A bibliometric evaluation of neurointerventional research published between 2003 and 2012 was conducted by using the PubMed data base. Analyzed parameters included the year of publication, type of document, language of the article, topic, declared funding, country of origin, type of collaboration between disciplines, the first author's specialty, and subject category and the Impact Factor of the publishing journal. RESULTS Between 2003 and 2012, a total of 2123 articles were published, of which 1107 (52.1%) were original articles, 1948 (91.8%) were written in English, 192 (9.0%) received funding, 661 (31.1%) were published by the United States, and 1060 (49.9%) resulted from interdisciplinary collaboration. Neurosurgery departments produced the most articles (n = 910, 42.9%), followed by radiology (n = 747, 35.2%) and neurology (n = 270, 12.7%). The time-trend analysis in the number of publications demonstrated slow growth from 2003 to 2012, with an average annual growth rate of +6.0%. CONCLUSIONS The fields of neurosurgery, radiology, and neurology have contributed substantially to neurointervention research. Slow growth, high interdisciplinary collaboration, and a low level of funding are peculiar characteristics of research in this field.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We performed a bibliometric analysis of scientific publications focused on positron emission tomography (PET) over a 10-year period. METHODS The MEDLINE and ISI Web of Knowledge databases were searched for English language original articles focused on PET in SCI/SCIE-indexed journals in 2002, 2007, and 2012. We selected the documents with titles that included "PET" or "positron emission." The following information was obtained from each article: journal (year of publication, title, subject category, and impact factor), subspecialty, imaging modality used, tracer, species, sample size, number of authors, affiliation of the first author, declared funding, and country of origin. RESULTS The yearly publication on PET increased from 547 (2002) to 986 (2007), and 1838 (2012). A total of 1753 (52.0%) articles were published in journals in the "Radiology, Nuclear Medicine & Medical Imaging" category, 1512 (44.9%) were in the subspecialty of oncology, 3245 (96.3%) used PET or PET/CT, 1698 (50.4%) used 2-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (FDG) as the radiotracer, 2378 (70.5%) were human studies, 1294 (38.4%) had a sample size of <20, 1674 (49.7%) had >7 authors, 779 (23.1%) were written by a first author from a department of nuclear medicine, and 1337 (39.7%) were supported by government funding. The United States published 948 studies (28.1%) followed by Japan (345, 10.2%) and Germany (335, 9.9%). In the time trend analysis oncology subspecialty, PET/MR as the imaging modality, FDG as the tracer, sample size>50, number of authors>7, radiology department affiliation of the first author, and government funding exhibited significantly positive trends. CONCLUSIONS The number of publication concerning PET has increased rapidly over the last decade. This bibliometric analysis revealed characteristics and trends of current PET research that provides useful information to researchers.
