Abstract
Aim Difficulty understanding speech following concussion is likely caused by auditory processing impairments. We hypothesized that concussion disrupts pitch and phonetic processing of a sound, cues in understanding a talker. Patients & methods/results We obtained frequency following responses to a syllable from 120 concussed and 120 control. Encoding of the fundamental frequency (F0), a pitch cue and the first formant (F1), a phonetic cue, was poorer in concussed children. The F0 reduction was greater in the children assessed within 2 weeks of their injuries. Conclusion Concussions affect auditory processing. Results strengthen evidence of reduced F0 encoding in children with concussion and call for longitudinal study aimed at monitoring the recovery course with respect to the auditory system.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate pre - to post-season differences in individual subtests of the Visio-Vestibular Examination (VVE) in healthy middle and high school athletes. METHODS This prospective cohort study recruited participants from a private suburban United States secondary school. Participants completed a demographic questionnaire prior to the start of their season. A proxy for head impact exposure was estimated by incorporating previously published head impact frequencies by team and sport. The VVE was completed pre - and post-season and consisted of 9 subtests: smooth pursuit, horizontal/vertical saccades and gaze stability, binocular convergence, left/right monocular accommodation, and complex tandem gait. Generalized estimating equations were employed to assess the relative risk of an abnormal VVE outcome based on testing session (pre - vs. post-season). RESULTS Participants included middle and high school athletes (n = 115; female = 59 (51.3%); median age at first assessment = 14.9 years, [IQR = 13.6, 16.0]) during 2017/18 - 2019/20 school years. During pre-season testing, accommodation (10.0%) and complex tandem gait (9.2%) had the largest proportion of abnormal outcomes, while smooth pursuits (10.6%) and convergence (9.5%) had the largest proportion of abnormal outcomes post-season. When assessing the effect of testing session on the relative risk of any abnormal VVE subtest, there were no significant findings (P ≥ 0.25). Additionally, there were no significant effects of testing session when adjusting for estimated head impact exposure for any VVE subtest (P ≥ 0.25). CONCLUSIONS Visio-vestibular function as measured by the VVE does not change from pre - to post-season in otherwise healthy adolescent athletes. Our findings suggest that the VVE may be stable and robust to typical neurodevelopment occurring in this dynamic age group and help inform post-injury interpretation of visio-vestibular impairments.

Abstract
This article provides a brief overview of auditory evoked potentials (AEPs) and their application in the areas of research and clinics within the field of communication disorders. The article begins with providing a historical perspective within the context of the key scientific developments that led to the emergence of numerous types of AEPs. Furthermore, the article discusses the different AEP techniques in the light of their feasibility in clinics. As AEPs, because of their versatility, find their use across disciplines, this article also discusses some of the research questions that are currently being addressed using AEP techniques in the field of communication disorders and beyond. At the end, this article summarizes the shortcomings of the existing AEP techniques and provides a general perspective toward the future directions. The article is aimed at a broad readership including (but not limited to) students, clinicians, and researchers. Overall, this article may act as a brief primer for the new AEP users, and as an overview of the progress in the field of AEPs along with future directions, for those who already use AEPs on a routine basis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Recent retrospective studies report differences in auditory neurophysiology between concussed athletes and uninjured controls using the frequency-following response (FFR). Adopting a prospective design in college football players, we compared FFRs before and after a concussion and evaluated test-retest reliability in non-concussed teammates. DESIGN Testing took place in a locker room. We analysed the FFR to the fundamental frequency (F0) (FFR-F0) of a speech stimulus, previously identified as a potential concussion biomarker. Baseline FFRs were obtained during the football pre-season. In athletes diagnosed with concussions during the season, FFRs were measured days after injury and compared to pre-season baseline. In uninjured controls, comparisons were made between pre- and post-season. STUDY SAMPLE Participants were Tulane University football athletes (n = 65). RESULTS In concussed athletes, there was a significant group-level decrease in FFR-F0 from baseline (26% decrease on average). By contrast, the control group's change from baseline was not statistically significant, and comparisons of pre- and post-season had good repeatability (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.75). CONCLUSIONS Results converge with previous work to evince suppressed neural function to the FFR-F0 following concussion. This preliminary study paves the way for larger-scale clinical evaluation of the specificity and reliability of the FFR as a concussion diagnostic.HighlightsThis prospective study reveals suppressed neural responses to sound in concussed athletes compared to baseline.Neural responses to sound show good repeatability in uninjured athletes tested in a locker-room setting.Results support the feasibility of recording frequency-following responses in non-laboratory conditions.
