Land-based drip-irrigated culture of Ulva compressa: The effect of culture platform design and nutrient concentration on biomass production and protein content

This work developed a laboratory prototype methodology for cost-effective, water-sparing drip-irrigation of seaweeds, as a model for larger-scale, on-land commercial units, which we envision as semi-automated, inexpensive polyethylene sheet-covered bow-framed greenhouses with sloping plastic covered floors, water-collecting sumps, and pumped recycling of culture media into overhead low-pressure drip emitters. Water droplets form on the continually wetted interior plastic surfaces of these types of greenhouses scattering incoming solar radiation to illuminate around and within the vertically-stacked culture platforms. Concentrated media formulations applied through foliar application optimize nutrient uptake by the seaweeds to improve growth and protein content of the cultured biomass. An additional attribute is that seaweed growth can be accelerated by addition of anthropogenic CO₂-containing industrial flue gases piped into the head-space of the greenhouse to reuse and recycle CO₂ into useful algal biomass. This demonstration tested three different drip culture platform designs (horizontal, vertical and slanted) and four increasing fertilizer media concentrations (in seawater) for growth, areal productivity, and thallus protein content of wild-collected Ulva compressa biomass, against fully-submerged controls. Cool White fluorescent lights provided 150–200 μmol photon m^-2 s^-1 illumination on a 12/12 hr day/night cycle. Interactive effects we tested using a four-level single factorial randomized block framework (p<0.05). Growth rates and biomass of the drip irrigation designs were 3–9% day^-1 and 5–18 g m^-2 day^-1 (d.w.) respectively, whereas the fully-submerged control group grew better at 8–11% per day with of 20–30 g m^-2 day^-1, indicating further optimization of the drip irrigation methodology is needed to improve growth and biomass production. Results demonstrated that protein content of Ulva biomass grown using the vertically-oriented drip culture platform and 2x fertilizer concentrations (42:16:36 N:P:K) was 27% d.w., approximating the similarly-fertilized control group. The drip methodology was found to significantly improve gas and nutrient mass transfer through the seaweed thalli, and overall, the labor- and-energy-saving methodology would use a calculated 20% of the seawater required for conventional on-land tank-based tumble culture.

Accumulation of Sellafield-derived radiocarbon ((14)C) in Irish Sea and West of Scotland intertidal shells and sediments

The nuclear energy industry produces radioactive waste at various stages of the fuel cycle. In the United Kingdom, spent fuel is reprocessed at the Sellafield facility in Cumbria on the North West coast of England. Waste generated at the site comprises a wide range of radionuclides including radiocarbon ((14)C) which is disposed of in various forms including highly soluble inorganic carbon within the low level liquid radioactive effluent, via pipelines into the Irish Sea. This (14)C is rapidly incorporated into the dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) reservoir and marine calcifying organisms, e.g. molluscs, readily utilise DIC for shell formation. This study investigated a number of sites located in Irish Sea and West of Scotland intertidal zones. Results indicate (14)C enrichment above ambient background levels in shell material at least as far as Port Appin, 265 km north of Sellafield. Of the commonly found species (blue mussel (Mytilus edulis), common cockle (Cerastoderma edule) and common periwinkle (Littorina littorea)), mussels were found to be the most highly enriched in (14)C due to the surface environment they inhabit and their feeding behaviour. Whole mussel shell activities appear to have been decreasing in response to reduced discharge activities since the early 2000s but in contrast, there is evidence of continuing enrichment of the carbonate sediment component due to in-situ shell erosion, as well as indications of particle transport of fine (14)C-enriched material close to Sellafield.

The roles of polyculture with Eucheuma gelatinae and Gafrarium tumidum in purification of eutrophic seawater and control of algae bloom

To control algae bloom and eutrophication in the tropical semi-closed harbor of the Hongsha Bay in Sanya, China, polyculture systems with macroalgae Eucheuma gelatinae and bivalves Gafrarium tumidum were studied. First, nine polyculture combinations with E. gelatinae and G. tumidum were selected in a pool. Two combinations were then chosen by response surface analysis and used for further study to validate their effect on controlling the microalgae density and reducing the nutrition concentration in the pool. Subsequently, the two selected combinations were used to study the effect on the purification of eutrophic seawater and control of algae bloom in a sea mesocosm. The results indicated that polyculture with E. gelatinae and G. tumidum enhanced the purification of eutrophic seawater and control of algae bloom. These two polyculture combinations are considered suitable for the Hongsha Bay of Sanya in China. The two combinations present an excellent effect on controlling the microalgae density and reducing the nutrition concentration.

Paradigm lost: reconsidering functional form and group hypotheses in marine ecology

Although functional form and functional group models for marine algae have been used extensively, there is little general literature support for these models, and many studies have shown that associated hypotheses are often incorrect. In functional form/group models, a wide range of ecological and physiological functions are assumed to be correlated with general algal form or morphology. In contrast, functional group approaches have been used most successfully in terrestrial and aquatic systems when groupings are based on a particular function rather than overall plant morphology, and when addressing ecosystem-level questions. In this type of functional group approach, a given set of species would likely be grouped differently depending on the function under consideration. Functional groupings are appropriate for many situations and questions, but not all. Certainly, grouping taxa by a particular function can be very useful and often necessary for many ecosystem-level questions and modeling, especially where qualitative results are more important than quantitative predictions, and when there are too many species in a system to consider them all individually. However, when one considers species-species interactions or questions about population biology, the specific responses of individual species must be considered. To make functional group models more useful, we recommend that groupings be based on specific functions (e.g. nutrient uptake rates, photosynthesis rates, herbivore resistance, disturbance resistance, etc.) rather than gross morphology. Explicit testing of performance of a particular function should be made before generalizations can be assumed, and groupings should be used for questions/approaches where they are most appropriate. If models fail when tested, they should be modified using the additional information to generate new hypotheses and models, and then retested.
