Branching processes in a random environment with immigration stopped at zero

A critical branching process with immigration which evolves in a random environment is considered. Assuming that immigration is not allowed when there are no individuals in the population, we investigate the tail distribution of the so-called life period of the process, i.e. the length of the time interval between the moment when the process is initiated by a positive number of particles and the moment when there are no individuals in the population for the first time.

The critical branching process with immigration stopped at zero

Limit theorems for the Galton–Watson process with immigration (BPI), where immigration is not permitted when the process is in state 0 (so that this state is absorbing), have been studied for the subcritical and supercritical cases by Seneta and Tavaré (1983). It is pointed out here that, apart from a change of context, the corresponding theorem in the critical case has been obtained by Vatutin (1977). Extensions which follow from a more general form of initial distribution are sketched, including a new form of limit result (7).

The age of a Galton-Watson population with a geometric offspring distribution

Motivated by the question of the age in a branching population we try to recreate the past by looking back from the currently observed population size. We define a new backward Galton-Watson process and study the case of the geometric offspring distribution with parameter p in detail. The backward process is then the Galton-Watson process with immigration, again with a geometric offspring distribution but with parameter 1-p, and it is also the dual to the original Galton-Watson process. We give the asymptotic distribution of the age when the initial population size is large in supercritical and critical cases. To this end, we give new asymptotic results on the Galton-Watson immigration processes stopped at zero.

A note on the probability of extinction in a class of population-size-dependent Galton-Watson processes

In a class of population-size-dependent Galton-Watson processes where extinction does not occur with probability 1 we describe the rate of decay of qi (the probability that the process starting from i ancestors will become extinct) as the number i of ancestors increases.

The results are related to the asymptotic behavior of the Green's function of the critical Galton-Watson process with immigration.

Some results on population-size-dependent Galton-Watson processes

Some classes of population-size-dependent Galton-Watson processes are considered where extinction occurs with probability 1. Results on the asymptotic behaviour of the probability of survival up to time t, mean population size and conditioned limit distributions are found to hold. They correspond to those obtained in the study of Galton-Watson processes with immigration stopped at 0.

On some classes of population-size-dependent Galton–Watson processes

Some classes of population-size-dependent Galton–Watson processes {Z(t)} t=0,1, …, whose transition probability generating functions allow for certain upper or lower bounds, can be treated by means of functional iteration methods. Criteria for almost certain extinction are obtained as well as gammatype limit distributions for Z(t)/t as t → ∞ the results can be stated under conditions on moments of the reproduction distributions.

Some stochastic models for plasmid copy number

Some stochastic models for the copy number of plasmids in a cell line are studied. When considering the behavior of copy number in the whole cell line, the theory of multitype branching processes is appropriate. Attention is paid to the cure rate in the cell line, and the asymptotic fractions of cells containing a given number of plasmids. These quantities are used to compare the models numerically.
