Managing the impact of climate change on the hydrology of the Gallocanta Basin, NE-Spain

The Gallocanta Basin represents an environment highly sensitive to climate change. Over the past 60 years, the Laguna de Gallocanta, an ephemeral lake situated in the closed Gallocanta basin, experienced a sequence of wet and dry phases. The lake and its surrounding wetlands are one of only a few bird sanctuaries left in NE-Spain for grey cranes on their annual migration from Scandinavia to northern Africa. Understanding the impact of climate change on basin hydrology is therefore of utmost importance for the appropriate management of the bird sanctuary. Changes in lake level are only weakly linked to annual rainfall, with reaction times between hours and months after rainfall. Both the total amount of rainfall over the reaction period, as well as individual extreme events, affect lake level. In this study the characteristics and frequencies of daily, event, monthly and bi-monthly rainfall over the past 60 years were analysed. The results revealed a clear link between increased frequencies of high magnitude rainfall and phases of water filling in the Laguna de Gallocanta. In the middle of the 20th century, the absolute amount of rainfall appears to have been more important for lake level, while more recently the frequency of high magnitude rainfall has emerged as the dominant variable. In the Gallocanta Basin, climate change and the distinct and continuing land use change since Spain joined the EU in 1986 have created an environment that is in a more or less constant state of transition. This highlights two challenges faced by hydrologists and climatologists involved in developing water management tools for the Gallocanta Basin in particular, but also other areas with sensitive and rapidly changing environments. Hydrologists have to understand the processes and the spatial and temporal patterns of surface-climate interaction in a watershed to assess the impact of climate change on its hydrology. Climatologists, on the other hand, have to develop climate models which provide the appropriate output data, such as reliable information on rainfall characteristics relevant for environmental management.

Local analysis of behaviour in the adjusting-delay task for assessing choice of delayed reinforcement

The adjusting-delay task introduced by Mazur (Quantitative analyses of behavior: V. The effect of delay and of intervening events on reinforcement value, 1987, pp. 55-73) has been widely used to study choice of delayed reinforcers. This paradigm involves repeated choice between one reinforcer delivered after a fixed delay and another, typically larger, reinforcer delivered after a variable delay; the variable delay is adjusted depending on the subject's choice until an equilibrium point is reached at which the subject is indifferent between the two alternatives. Rats were trained on a version of this task and their behaviour was examined to determine the nature of their sensitivity to the adjusting delay; these analyses included the use of a cross-correlational technique. No clear evidence of sensitivity to the adjusting delay was found. A number of decision rules, some sensitive to the adjusting delay and some not, were simulated and it was observed that some effects usually supposed to be a consequence of delay sensitivity could be generated by delay-independent processes, such as a consistent, unchanging relative preference between the alternatives. Consequently, the use of explicit analysis of delay sensitivity is advocated in future research on delayed reinforcement.

Foraging site displacement in common crane flocks

Optimal foraging theory predicts that an individual should resort to intraspecific kleptoparasitism when this foraging strategy helps to maximize its intake rate. Thus aggressor and victim should be foraging at lower and higher rates, respectively, than the flock average (intake rate maximization). Independent of the maximization principle, moreover, an aggressor should attack when its intake rate falls below a threshold critical for survival, and select a victim foraging at an intake rate high enough to ensure survival (starvation risk minimization). We tested both hypotheses using 324 aggressive displacements from feeding sites observed in flocks of common cranes, Grus grus, foraging on cereal fields. Aggressors attacked cranes feeding at higher rates than average birds. The immediate consequences of a successful attack were an increase in intake rate for the aggressor and a decrease for the victim. The intake rate of the aggressor prior to the attack was lower than both the mean intake rate of the flock and the minimum intake rate necessary to cover basic metabolic needs. After displacing its victim, the intake rate of the aggressor was higher than before the attack and also higher than the average intake rate of the flock. The intake rate of the aggressor after the attack was not higher than the mean intake rate of the flock, however, when the time spent on the attack was included. We conclude that cranes used a kleptoparasitic strategy to recover from temporary reductions in feeding rate. This was particularly the case below the threshold of intake necessary for survival.
