Global Prevalence of Anxiety, Depression, and Stress Among Patients with Skin Diseases: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

The changes in human lifestyle over the past few decades have impacted the prevalence of skin diseases within different societies. Skin diseases may result in various physical and mental disorders. The most common mental disorders observed among the patients are stress, anxiety, and depression. This study aims to investigate the global prevalence of anxiety, depression, and stress in patients with skin diseases. In this Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis study, the PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct, Embase, Web of science, and Google Scholar repositories were searched without a lower time limit. Heterogeneity among the identified studies was examined using the I2 index, and accordingly random effects model was adopted for analysis. Data analysis was conducted within the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software (v. 2). In total, 113 studies were included for the final analysis. The overall pooled prevalence of stress, depression, and anxiety in skin disease patients was found to be 39.4%, 27.2% and 28.8%, respectively. Among patients with psoriasis, acne, vitiligo or atopic dermatitis diseases, the highest number of patients suffering from stress was related to patients with acne (75.7%). The highest prevalence of depression, and anxiety was reported in patients with vitiligo (38.3%) and acne (36.5%), respectively. Considering the high prevalence of mental disorders among patients with skin diseases and recognising the impacts of mental health challenges on patients' well-being, the findings of this study provide valuable insights for identifying specific populations that require targeted interventions for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental illnesses. Accordingly, healthcare policymakers should incorporate psychological treatment and support measures as integral components of comprehensive care strategies for patients with skin diseases.

Epidemiology of mental health comorbidity in patients with atopic dermatitis: An analysis of global trends from 1998 to 2022

The prevalence rates of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), depression, anxiety and suicide are increasing in patients with atopic dermatitis (AD), although no research has systematically examined these trends yet. Here, we explore the prevalence of the occurrence of comorbidities, such as ADHD, depression, anxiety and suicide with AD. We searched seven electronic databases from inception to October 2022 to identify relevant studies, and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) tools were used to assess the quality of observational studies. Statistical analysis was performed using R software. Publication bias was evaluated using Egger's and Begg's linear tests. The global prevalence rates of ADHD, depression, anxiety and suicidal ideation in patients with AD were 7%, 17%, 21% and 13%, respectively, between 1998 and October 2022. Among children (aged <18 years), North American children with AD had the highest prevalence rates of ADHD (10%), depression (13%) and anxiety (20%). Among the adult (aged ≥18 years) population, patients with AD in Africa had the highest prevalence rates of depression (36%) and anxiety (44%), while Asian adults with AD had the highest prevalence rates of ADHD (7%) and suicidal ideation (20%). These results highlight the high prevalence and comorbidity rates of mental illnesses with AD, which should be brought to the attention of patients with AD and their physicians.

The Psychological Impact of Vitiligo in Saudi Arabia

Background Vitiligo, the most common pigment disorder, impacts 0.5-2% of the global population, often causing psychological distress due to appearance changes and potential discrimination. Existing data on depressive symptoms and quality of life (QoL) effects in Saudi Arabian vitiligo patients are limited and inconsistent. Hence, this multi-center investigation was conducted in Saudi Arabia to determine the prevalence of depressive symptoms and quality of life (QoL) impairment in patients with vitiligo and to identify factors linked to increased psychological distress in this population. Methods We conducted a multi-center cross-sectional study in Saudi Arabia, employing two validated Arabic questionnaires, the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) and the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 items (PHQ-9), along with demographic information. Appropriate statistical analyses were performed. Results In total, 204 patients completed the survey. The median DLQI was 4 (range: 25), while the median PHQ-9 was 5 (range: 27). Factors associated with worse QoL included an early age of onset (under 18 years) and a disease duration exceeding five years. Conversely, only disease duration correlated with worse PHQ-9 scores. Vitiligo lesions on the lower extremities, feet, and genitalia were linked to poorer DLQI scores, while only genitalia were associated with worse PHQ-9 scores. We recommend further social awareness campaigns emphasizing the role of supportive families to improve the well-being of vitiligo patients.

Prevalence and Odds of Anxiety Disorders and Anxiety Symptoms in Children and Adults with Psoriasis: Systematic Review and Meta-analysi

The magnitude of the association between psoriasis and depression has been evaluated, but not that between psoriasis and anxiety. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to examine the prevalence and odds of anxiety disorders and symptoms in patients with psoriasis. Five medical databases (Cochrane Database, EMBASE, PubMed, PsychINFO, ScienceDirect) were searched for relevant literature. A total of 101 eligible articles were identified. Meta-analysis revealed different prevalence rates depending on the type of anxiety disorder: 15% [95% confidence interval [CI] 9–21] for social anxiety disorder, 11% [9–14] for generalized anxiety disorder, and 9% [95% CI 8–10] for unspecified anxiety disorder. There were insufficient studies assessing other anxiety disorders to be able to draw any conclusions on their true prevalence. Meta-analysis also showed a high prevalence of anxiety symptoms (34% [95% CI 32–37]). Case-control studies showed a positive association between psoriasis and unspecified anxiety disorder (odds ratio 1.48 [1.18; 1.85]) and between psoriasis and anxiety symptoms (odds ratio 2.51 [2.02; 3.12]). All meta-analyses revealed an important heterogeneity, which could be explained in each case by methodological factors. The results of this study raise the necessity of screening for the presence of anxiety disorders, as previously recommended for depressive disorders, in patients with psoriasis and, if necessary, to refer such patients for evaluation by a mental health professional and appropriate treatment.

Psychosocial Effects of Vitiligo: A Systematic Literature Review

Background

Patients with vitiligo experience reduced quality of life.

Objective

To comprehensively describe the available evidence for psychosocial burden in vitiligo.

Methods

A systematic review of observational studies and clinical trials identified using PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, and the Cochrane databases was performed through 1 March, 2021, to assess psychosocial comorbidities in vitiligo. Two independent reviewers performed an assessment of articles and extracted data for qualitative synthesis.

Results

Included studies (N = 168) were published between 1979 and 1 March, 2021; 72.6% were published since 2010. Disorders including or related to depression (41 studies, 0.1–62.3%) and anxiety (20 studies, 1.9–67.9%) were the most commonly reported. The most prevalent psychosocial comorbidities were feelings of stigmatization (eight studies, 17.3–100%), adjustment disorders (12 studies, 4–93.9%), sleep disturbance (seven studies, 4.6–89.0%), relationship difficulties including sexual dysfunction (ten studies, 2.0–81.8%), and avoidance or restriction behavior (12.5–76%). The prevalence of most psychosocial comorbidities was significantly higher vs healthy individuals. Factors associated with a significantly higher burden included female sex, visible or genital lesions, age < 30 years (particularly adolescents), and greater body surface area involvement, among others. The most commonly reported patient coping strategy was lesion concealment.

Limitations

Available studies were heterogeneous and often had limited details; additionally, publication bias is possible.

Conclusions

The results of this systematic review show that vitiligo greatly affects psychosocial well-being. The extent of psychosocial comorbidities supports the use of multidisciplinary treatment strategies and education to address the vitiligo-associated burden of disease.

Association of body dysmorphic disorder with anxiety, depression, and stress among university students

Objectives

This study aims to estimate the prevalence of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) and identify its association with depression, anxiety, and stress.

Method

We conducted a cross-sectional study in Jeddah, KSA. In 2019, a validated questionnaire with items on sociodemographic characteristics and body dysmorphic disorder, as well as the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale – 21 items (DASS 21) was distributed to 1,112 students of King Abdulaziz University. SPSS version 23 was used for data analysis, which included descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and binary logistic regression models. The association was presented as an odds ratio (OR) along with its 95% confidence Interval (CI).

Results

The overall prevalence of BDD was 13.9% (95% CI of 11.8–16.2.) with the highest reported sites being the skin (81.6%) and waist (68.8%). BDD was found to be a significant predictor of depression with an OR of 4.2 (95% CI 2.9–6.1), anxiety OR of 2.2 (95%1.6–3.2), and stress OR of 3.2 (2.2–4.7). Females were significantly associated with anxiety, OR of 1.4 (95% CI 1.1–1.9) and stress, OR of 1.5 (1.1–2). Affiliation to the administration, arts, humanities, and social colleges was also a significant predictor of anxiety as reflected by an OR of 1.4 (95% CI 1.1–1.8).

Conclusions

Our study shows that BDD is relatively common among university students in Jeddah and associated with depression, anxiety, and stress.

Psychiatric morbidity, stress and quality of life among geriatric dermatology patients: Therapeutic considerations from an Indian perspective

We aimed to determine the prevalence of psychiatric morbidities, stress and quality of life, the pattern of skin diseases and associated psychosocial factors in geriatric population. Patients aged 60 years and older were recruited. Demographics and dermatological history and findings were collected using a preset Proforma. Geriatric depression scale (GDS), hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS), perceived stress scale (PSS), and dermatology life quality index (DLQI) were instituted in all the patients. A total of 310 patients were included in the study, 173 males and 137 females. Infectious diseases (39.6%), papulosquamous diseases (17.1%), and eczema (15.5%) were common disorders. 45.5% were depressed and 43.2% had anxiety (hospital anxiety and depression scale). 55.8% had depression (geriatric depression rating scale), 20.3% had high stress and 11% had extremely large effect on DLQI. Divorced/widowed patients experienced more depression (p = 0.037) and had more impairment in quality of life (p = 0.05). Patients living in three generation family experienced more impairment in quality of life (p = 0.000). Our study demonstrated high prevalence of psychiatric morbidities in geriatric dermatology patients. It implies the need of special care with more attention to psychiatric co morbidities. The role of psychiatry-dermatology liaison clinic may benefit these patients.

Meta-Analytic Review of High Anxiety Comorbidity among Patients with Vitiligo

Background

Vitiligo is a disfiguring skin disease with profound psychosocial impacts, such as anxiety, but the reported effect sizes of associations vary. We aimed to conduct a meta-analysis to quantify the strength of association between anxiety and vitiligo and to estimate the prevalence of anxiety among individuals with vitiligo.

Methods

A systematic literature search was performed in five online databases (MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and PsycINFO) from inception until March 20, 2020. All of the eligible studies were comprehensively reviewed, and all of the available data were analyzed according to our predefined criteria.

Results

Twenty-one studies involving 3259 patients in 11 countries were included in this meta-analysis. Compared with the healthy control group, patients with vitiligo often had concomitant anxiety (OR = 6.14 [95% CI: 3.35–11.24], I² = 30.1%). The pooled prevalence of anxiety in female patients was significantly higher than that in males (OR = 2.24 [95% CI: 1.31–3.84], I² = 0.0%). Subgroup analysis showed that the pooled prevalence of clinical anxiety disorder and anxiety symptoms was 12% (95% CI: 7%–16%, I² = 76.3%) and 34% (95% CI: 21%–46%, I² = 94.7%), respectively. No publication bias has been detected by Begg's funnel plot and Egger's test.

Conclusion

Patients with vitiligo have high anxiety comorbidity, with female predominance. Dermatologists and psychiatrists should be vigilant to the presence of anxiety, apply appropriate interventions to reduce the psychological impacts in a timely manner, and thus promote recovery in vitiligo patients. However, due to some objective limitations (poor information about the OR and diversity in assessment tools among included studies), findings should be interpreted with caution.

Psychodermatology knowledge and awareness in Chinese dermatologists: Results of a survey study

To assess the knowledge, awareness, practice patterns, and attitudes of Chinese dermatologists toward psychocutaneous disorders and explore their interest in continuing medical education (CME) of psychodermatology. An online survey study was conducted from October to November 2019. The survey questionnaire link was sent to the members of the national and local association of dermatology through a social media App. After confirming the informed consent to enrol in the study, the participants filled out the online questionnaire anonymously. About 1047 dermatologists completed the survey. The most common diagnoses referred to the psychiatrist from Chinese dermatologists were venereal phobia (51.77%), delusion of parasitosis (44.03%), and trichotillomania (32.28%). Compared with dermatologists, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) dermatologists had less training experience on psychodermatologic CME (4.21% vs 8.34% who had attending more than twice CME, P < .05). Although TCM dermatologist experience more frequency with psychodermatology (24.21% TCM vs 15.71% dermatologists), they had lower comfort level in treating psychodermatologic patients (51.58% TCM vs 58.89% dermatologist) (P > .05). While 818 (78.13%) dermatologists never received any training course, 84.53% of the dermatologists expressed interest in attending CME events on psychodermatology. The most popular CME themes of psychodermatology were emotional disorders related to skin diseases, delusion of parasitosis, and trichotillomania. Chinese dermatologists have insufficient knowledge and awareness toward psychodermatology. TCM dermatologists have higher awareness on psychocutaneous diseases compared with dermatologists. Psychodermatology continuing medical education programs should be carried out as soon as possible.

Vitiligo and anxiety: A systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

Vitiligo is an acquired depigmenting skin disease which is often accompanied by mental distress. There are numerous studies dedicated to local and global prevalence of depression in patients with vitiligo but anxiety has not been recognized as a major mental problem within named population. We aimed to evaluate the prevalence of anxiety among patients with vitiligo from different countries and to compare it with patients suffering from eczema, psoriasis, and acne.

METHODS

In November 2019, we conducted a systematic search for observational studies that examined the prevalence of anxiety in vitiligo patients. Fifteen studies comprising 1176 patients with vitiligo were included to our systematic review.

RESULTS

The general prevalence of anxiety among vitiligo patients was equal to 35.8%. Statistically significant difference in anxiety rates was found among female and male patients (47.32% vs 42.4%) (P = 0.03), but the clinical relevance of this issue remains arguable. In addition, the pooled odds ratio among vitiligo and non-vitiligo patients did not indicate a statistical significance among patients coming from different continents.

CONCLUSIONS

The pooled prevalence of anxiety among vitiligo patients worldwide was comparable to other severe skin disorders. This finding accentuates the necessity of anxiety awareness in management of patients with skin diseases.

Depressive, anxiety, stress, and insomnia symptoms in patients with psoriasis: a cross-sectional study

Introduction

Assessment of psychological well-being in psoriasis patients is recommended. However, studies evaluating depressive, anxiety, stress, and insomnia symptoms in Arabic patients with psoriasis are lacking.

Aim

To quantify levels of psoriasis-related depressive, anxiety, stress, and insomnia symptoms in Arabic patients with psoriasis.

Material and methods

A cross-sectional survey on patients’ demographics, disease characteristics, and psychological measures using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item scale, Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21 (7-item stress subscale), and Insomnia Severity Index. The prevalence and scores of depressive, anxiety, stress, and insomnia symptoms were calculated. Multivariate linear regression models were developed to assess patients’ demographics and disease characteristics affecting the psychological measures.

Results

The analysis included 223 patients. The patients reported mild levels of depressive, anxiety, and insomnia symptoms (median (interquartile range (IQR)) scores: 9 (6–14), 6 (4–11), and 12 (4–18), respectively) and a moderate level of stress symptoms (median (IQR) score: 10 (5–14)). The prevalence of depressive, anxiety, stress, and insomnia symptoms were 47.1%, 32.7%, 59.6%, and 57%, respectively. Multivariate linear regression analyses revealed that for each unit increase in the impact of psoriasis on daily life, there were 5.7 (95% confidence intervals (CI): 3.7–7.8), 3.8 (95% CI: 1.8–5.7), 5.3 (95% CI: 3.1–7.4), and 6.5 (95% CI: 3.7–9.4) units increase in depression, anxiety, and stress, and insomnia scores, respectively.

Conclusions

The prevalence of depressive, anxiety, stress, and insomnia symptoms in Arabic patients with psoriasis was high. Clinical interventions, screening for psychiatric comorbidities, and consideration of psychotherapy should be implemented in this patient group.

Understanding the Burden of Atopic Dermatitis in Africa and the Middle East

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common inflammatory skin disease characterized by intensely pruritic lesions. The prevalence of atopic dermatitis is increasing in developing regions, including Africa and the Middle East. However, these regions are underrepresented in the dermatology literature, and a better understanding of the growing burden of atopic dermatitis in Africa and the Middle East is necessary. Herein, we summarize current knowledge on atopic dermatitis epidemiology, disease burden, and treatment options in Africa and the Middle East, highlighting the unmet needs of patients in these regions. With these needs in mind, we provide clinical recommendations for appropriate management of atopic dermatitis in Africa and the Middle East. FUNDING: Pfizer Inc. Prevalence and predictors of depression among dermatology clinic patients in a teaching hospital, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

Context:

Depression in patients with a skin condition can lead to severe consequences that affect the quality of life. To our knowledge, the estimated prevalence of depression in patients who visited dermatological clinics in Jeddah remains unknown.

Aims:

To assess the prevalence of depression among patients with dermatological conditions and evaluate the association between clinical and demographic characteristics and depressive symptoms.

Settings and Design:

A cross-sectional study was conducted among dermatological patients at King Abdulaziz University Hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Materials and Methods:

The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) was used for screening depression.

Statistical Analysis Used:

Chi-square test and odds ratios (ORs) were used to determine the association among variables.

Results:

The study included 273 participants. More than two-thirds (194) of the participants were women (71.1%). Depressive symptoms were prevalent in 43 (15.8%) participants. Depression was the most prevalent among patients with psoriasis (39.5%, P < 0.001), followed by those with acne (30.2% P = 0.04).

Conclusion:

Psychosocial assessment should be addressed when evaluating and treating dermatological diseases. Screening tools, including PHQ-9, can facilitate the early detection of depressive symptoms and improve clinical outcomes. Addressing psychosocial aspects of skin conditions may help in reducing exacerbation of symptoms, mainly for conditions aggravated by stress, including dermatitis and psoriasis.

The prevalence of psychological comorbidity in people with vitiligo: a systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

Vitiligo is a chronic disorder causing skin depigmentation with global prevalence varying from 0·2% to 1·8%. U.K. guidelines recommend assessment of psychological state during clinical evaluation of vitiligo. However, the prevalence of psychological comorbidity in people with vitiligo has not been described.

OBJECTIVES

To establish the prevalence of psychological symptoms or disorders in people with vitiligo and describe the outcome measures used.

METHODS

We performed a comprehensive search of MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL and PsycINFO to identify observational studies assessing the prevalence of psychological symptoms or disorders (December 2016). DerSimonian and Lard random-effects models were used to estimate the overall pooled prevalence.

RESULTS

We identified 29 studies with 2530 people with vitiligo. Most studies included a measure of either depression (n = 25) or anxiety (n = 13). The commonest tools were the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and the Centre for Epidemiology Studies Depression Scale. Ten studies provided information on 13 other psychological outcomes. Pooled prevalence using depression-specific and anxiety-specific questionnaires was 0·29 [95% confidence interval (CI) 0·21-0·38] and 0·33 (95% CI 0·18-0·49), respectively. Prevalence was lower for clinically diagnosed depression (0·21, 95% CI 0·15-0·28) and anxiety (0·15, 95% CI 0·06-0·24). When nonspecific tools were used the prevalence remained similar for depression (0·27, 95% CI 0·08-0·46) but increased for anxiety (0·46, 95% CI 0·39-0·52). High heterogeneity was observed.

CONCLUSIONS

A range of psychological outcomes are common in people with vitiligo. The prevalence of anxiety was influenced by type of screening tool, suggesting the need for validation of psychological outcome screening tools in the field of dermatology.

Prevalence and predictors of depressive symptoms among attendees of a tertiary care dermatology clinic in Muscat, Oman

BACKGROUND

Various studies have suggested that depression is more prevalent among patients with skin disorders than in the general population. Most of the studies addressing this subject involve Euro-American populations.

OBJECTIVES

The present study aimed to estimate the prevalence of depressive symptoms among patients with dermatological disorders and, then, to decipher the clinical-demographic factors associated with depressive symptoms.

METHODS

A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted among a random sample of patients attending a dermatology clinic in Muscat. The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) was used to screen for depressive symptoms. A logistic regression model was used to find the adjusted and unadjusted odds ratios (ORs).

RESULTS

A total of 260 patients participated in this study, with a response rate of 81%. The prevalence of depression symptoms was 24%. According to regression analysis, family history of depression, comorbid medical disorders, and treatment with topicals or isotretinoin were significant predictors of depression (OR = 9.41, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.27-39.05, P = 0.002; OR = 2.0, 95% CI: 1.2-3.21, P = 0.05; OR = 2.28, 95% CI: 1.09-4.76, P = 0.028; and OR = 2.78; 95% CI: 1.08-7.19, P = 0.035, respectively).

CONCLUSION

This study indicates that depressive symptoms are common among patients with dermatological disorders in Oman, particularly in those with a family history of depression and medical comorbidities, and those who use a specific dermatological medication. Screening for depression in patients attending dermatology clinics is essential in order to detect and promptly treat patients suffering from depression.

Epidemiology of mental health comorbidity in psoriasis

AIM

The occurrence of mental health comorbidities such as depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation or behavior is not uncommon in the context of psoriasis. The negative influence of psoriatic disease on a patient's physical and mental well-being, in combination with overlapping pathophysiology, increase the risk for clinically significant psychiatric conditions. These psychiatric conditions, in turn, influence the patient's outlook and potentially, prognosis. Although the healthcare community increasingly recognizes the association of mental health comorbidities with psoriasis, the extent of the correlation is not fully appreciated. To better understand the relationship between mental health comorbidities and psoriasis, including prevalence, risk factors, and response of psychiatric comorbidities to psoriasis treatment, a narrative review of the published literature was conducted.

METHODS

Data from epidemiologic, observational, and clinical studies demonstrate a substantially greater mental health comorbidity burden in patients with psoriasis compared with those without psoriasis or patients with other dermatologic conditions.

RESULT

The influence of contemporary drug therapies on measures of depression and anxiety are predominantly positive, although further data are needed to better understand the effects of long-term therapy.

CONCLUSION

Clinicians should consider the heightened potential for mental health comorbidities when determining an optimal management strategy for their patients with psoriasis.

Prevalence and Associated Factors of Erectile Dysfunction in Patients With Moderate to Severe Psoriasis and Healthy Population: A Comparative Study Considering Physical and Psychological Factors

Recent studies have shown that psoriasis is associated with an increased prevalence of erectile dysfunction. To our knowledge, no comparative study has considered simultaneously the role of organic factors and psychological factors in this process. We performed a prospective case series study matched by age to explore the prevalence of erectile dysfunction in psoriasis patients compared to a healthy population and to investigate the role of anxiety, depression, and cardiovascular risk factors in the relationship between psoriasis and erectile dysfunction. The healthy group was matched by frequency to cases by age. Seventy-nine patients with moderate to severe psoriasis and 79 healthy controls participated in the study. Participants completed the Massachusetts General Hospital Sexual Functioning Questionnaire and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. Psoriasis patients had an increased prevalence of erectile dysfunction in comparison to controls, 34.2 vs. 17.7 % (p < .05). Multivariate analysis showed a significant association between erectile dysfunction and age, smoking and anxiety/depression, but not with psoriasis per se. In conclusion, the higher prevalence of smoking and anxiety/depression among patients with moderate to severe psoriasis probably explains the higher prevalence of erectile dysfunction in this population.

Depression, Anxiety and Stress among Saudi Arabian Dermatology Patients: Cross-sectional study

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to determine the prevalence of depression, anxiety and stress among Saudi Arabian dermatology patients and to assess associations with sociodemographic and clinical characteristics.

METHODS

This cross-sectional study was conducted among 300 consecutive dermatology patients visiting King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in August 2015. The Arabic version of the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale was used to screen for symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress. Quality of life (QOL) was assessed using the Dermatology Life Quality Index.

RESULTS

A total of 254 dermatology patients participated in the study (response rate: 84.7%). The prevalence of depression, anxiety and stress was 12.6%, 22.1% and 7.5%, respectively. The presence of at least one of these negative emotional states was noted among 24.4% of the cohort (95% confidence interval: 19.3-30.2%). Depression was significantly higher among subjects who lacked family support (26.5% versus 10.7%; P = 0.006) while anxiety was less common among patients who engaged in physical exercise (14.5% versus 29.4%; P = 0.005). According to the multivariate logistic regression analysis, poor QOL and a lack of family support were significant predictors of a negative emotional state.

CONCLUSION

Almost a quarter of the studied Saudi Arabian dermatology patients were found to suffer from at least one negative emotional state. A lack of family support and poor QOL were the primary factors associated with a negative emotional state. Interventional studies are needed to examine the effects of social and family support on psychological conditions among Saudi Arabian dermatology patients.
