Abstract
Background The disease COVID-19, caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection, has a systemic effect and is associated with a number of pathophysiological mechanisms that mobilize a wide range of biomolecules. Cytokines and growth factors (GFs) are critical regulators of tissue damage or repair in osteoarthritis (OA) and are being recognized as key players in the pathogenesis of COVID-19. A clear understanding of the long-term consequences of SARS-CoV-2 infection, especially in patients with concomitant chronic diseases, is limited and needs to be elucidated. The study aimed to evaluate the degree of inflammation and levels of pro-angiogenic and hypoxic factors, as well as heat shock proteins HSP60 and HSP70 in plasma, of patients with OA after recovery from COVID-19. Methods The research involved patients of an orthopedic specialty clinic aged 39 to 80 diagnosed with knee OA. All examined patients were divided into three groups: the Control group included conditionally healthy donors, group OA included patients with knee OA mainly stage II or III and the group of OA and COVID-19 included patients with OA who had COVID-19. The plasma levels of pro-inflammatory molecules IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, NF-κB, angiogenic factors VEGF, FGF-2, PDGF, hypoxic factor HIF-1α and molecular chaperones HSP60 and HSP70 were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results The study showed that in both groups of patients, with OA and convalescent COVID-19, there was an increase in the plasma level of IL-1β and a decrease in TNF-α and NF-κB levels when compared to healthy controls. Systemic deregulation of the cytokine profile was accompanied by reduction in plasma levels of pro-angiogenic growth factors, most pronounced in cases of VEGF and PDGF. This analysis did not reveal any significant difference in the plasma level of HIF-1α. A decrease in the level of stress protein HSP60 in the blood of patients with OA, as well as those patients who have had SARS-CoV-2 infection, has been established. Conclusion The results suggest the potential role pro-inflammatory cytokines and angiogenesis-related growth factors in pathogenesis of both joint pathologies and long-term systemic post-COVID-19 disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Type 2 diabetes is a metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia as a result of insulin resistance and decreased insulin secretion. A relatively large number of patients with this type of diabetes have abdominal obesity, which also affects insulin resistance development. Chronic hyperglycemia can lead to damage and dysfunction of various organs, and a striking example is diabetic nephropathy. Diabetic nephropathy is a specific kind of kidney damage that occurs due to complications of diabetes and is accompanied by the formation of diffuse or nodular glomerulosclerosis, which can lead to terminal renal failure and requires immediate substitution through renal therapy or renal transplantation. Diabetic nephropathy is diagnosed with albuminuria and a decrease in the rate of glomerular filtration. METHODS This review was based on a literature search for the most important evidence of vitamin D as a possible method of prevention for obesity, type 2 diabetes, and diabetic nephropathy. Collected published articles were summarized according to their overall themes. RESULTS In this review, we considered vitamin D as a possible method of treatment for type 2 diabetes, as well as its complications, including diabetic nephropathy. CONCLUSION Studies show that vitamin D inhibits the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, resulting in improved renal function in diabetic nephropathy. Vitamin D also has antiinflammatory, antiproliferative, and anti-metastatic effects, which improve endothelial function.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Psoriasis is a chronic immune-mediated inflammatory disease characterized by erythematous plaques that can extend along the entire skin surface. In the latest years, it has been shown that serum calprotectin correlated strongly with several inflammatory biomarkers. Since high levels of calprotectin have been found in psoriatic lesions, it is of paramount importance to investigate the role of serum calprotectin as a possible novel diagnostic marker of psoriasis. Aim of our prospective pilot study was to assess the level of serum calprotectin in psoriatic patients. METHODS Between January 2018 and July 2019, 45 subjects were enrolled at the Dermatology Unit of Magna Graecia University of Catanzaro, Italy. Thirty-two of them were psoriatic patients and 13 healthy controls. Psoriasis severity was assessed by the Psoriasis Area Severity Index. RESULTS A statistically significant difference between the two groups (P=0.01) was found in terms of body mass index, higher among patients than in controls. By performing the Student's t-test for unpaired data, serum calprotectin resulted significantly higher (P=0.033) among psoriatic patients than in controls. Furthermore, performing the receiver operator characteristic curve analysis, serum calprotectin showed a significant area under the curve, implying its possible role in finding psoriatic patients. Our study aimed to evaluate the serum levels of calprotectin in a group of psoriatic patients and in a control group. The results showed that serum calprotectin levels were significantly higher in the patient group than in the control group. This result confirms the observations present in the literature. CONCLUSIONS In this pilot study psoriatic patients had a significant high level of serum calprotectin than healthy subjects, and this biomarker had high accuracy in identifying patients. Further studies, with larger sample size will need to confirm our data.

Abstract
Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) associated with Severe Acute Respiratory Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) usually develops 1-1.5 months after mild or asymptomatic COVID-19 in countries with high incidence. MIS-C has a polymorphism of clinical manifestations, which include prolonged fever, polymorphic rash, non-purulent conjunctivitis, pneumonia complicated by distress syndrome, myocarditis, coronary artery disease, toxic shock syndrome, limb edema, polyserositis, severe abdominal syndrome with diarrhea and others. Establishing this diagnosis requires significant efforts to rule out diseases of other etiology. The aim of our study was to analyze the clinical and laboratory features of children with MIS-C associated with SARS-CoV-2 and severe abdominal syndrome. Six children with MIS-C associated with SARS-CoV-2 and severe abdominal syndrome were hospitalized in Lviv Regional Children's Clinical Hospital "OHMATDYT", Ukraine, from April 2020 to September 2021. For differential diagnosis IgM, IgG to SARS-CoV-2 by ELISA, RNA to SARS-CoV-2 by PCR, bacteriological tests of blood, urine and feces were performed. Furthermore, the diagnostic work up included chest radiography, echocardiography, ultrasound of the lungs and abdominal organs. Laboratory findings revealed an increase in the normal value of inflammatory markers and high levels of IgG to SARS-CoV-2. Administration of intravenous immunoglobulin at a dose of 1 to 2 g/kg body weight per day prevented further coronary artery disease in patients and provided regression in already affected coronary arteries. At the same time, regression of abdominal syndrome was observed. Early diagnosis of MIS-C in patients with SARS-CoV-2 and severe abdominal syndrome allows to define the appropriate treatment strategy.

Abstract
Akkermansia muciniphila (A. muciniphila) is a mucin-degrading bacterium that commonly lives in the intestinal mucus layer. It is normally detected in human faecal specimens and is one of the few bacteria potentially associated to obesity development. In this narrative review, possible mechanisms that support how A. muciniphila is implicated in the pathogenesis of obesity and metabolic-associated disease are described with the evaluation of its role as an intermediary or independent agent whose manipulation could be useful in the management of metabolic disorders. The ampleness of A. muciniphila is notably diminished in obesity, type 2 diabetes (T2D), non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), cardiometabolic diseases and low-grade inflammation. Furthermore, an inverse relationship between A. muciniphila, body weight and insulin sensitivity has been observed in both humans and animals. Antidiabetic drugs, gastric bypass surgery, prebiotics and biologically active compounds, such as polyphenols or saponins, have been shown to be associated with A. muciniphila relative abundance and thus could have favourable effects on metabolic disorders. Furthermore, A. muciniphila supplementation alone has been correlated with weight reduction and improvement of metabolic disorders, including fat mass gain, adipose tissue inflammation, metabolic endotoxaemia, and insulin resistance. Nevertheless, since the primary beneficial impacts of this bacterium have been predominantly investigated in various preclinical models, these results need to be confirmed in randomized clinical trials.
