Colors and Figures in Senegal

A sample of 2,500 primary school children and 943 secondary school children asked to name their favorite number (between 0 and 9) and their favorite color, gave as the primary school children's preference brown-five and that of the second group black-nine. These observations do not corroborate the 1941 findings of Eysenck, preference: blue for a larger but more heterogeneous sample that contained few Africans. Several interpretations of the phenomenon are discussed, including a greater awareness of school children of their cultural identity as they grow older, a sensitiveness to color and figures shaped by the culture, and mental traditions of the ethnic group to which they belong, etc.

Color Preferences of Art Students: Surface Colors. I

In a previous study with imagined colors (Götz & Götz, 1974) our aim was to test the statistical significance of the frequency distribution over the categories of a given preference scale, separately for each single color. For art students only red and blue were “pleasant,” while gray and pink were “unpleasant” colors, black and white counted as “neutral,” and the distributions of all other colors listed were not statistically different from chance. In the present study with 14 surface colors the results are similar with the exception of yellow and orange, which range now among the highly preferred colors. The only sex difference was for green. The limitations of the present work are discussed.

Lüscher color preferences of Arctic Inuit and of southern Canadians

A comparison of color preferences based on the Lüscher Color Test was made for 21 Inuit residing within the Arctic circle and those of 49 residents of Southern Canada. These two groups have been raised in radically different physical and cultural environments. We expected that such factors could influence color preferences; however, no statistically significant differences were found in relative preferences for blue, green, red, yellow, purple, brown, grey, and black for our data based on Lüscher's scoring and those on our own scoring system independent of Lüscher's theory and scoring.

Color preferences of art students: surface colors: II

In a previous study (Götz & Götz, 1974b) the preferences of 14 surface colors were analyzed. While this set contained only one red, one blue, one yellow, etc., the color set of the present investigation was extended, and the preferences of 5 different reds, blues, yellow, etc. were analyzed. Between the five variations of red and yellow, respectively, the greatest affective differences were found, while the opposite was true for the 5 oranges, pinks, and grays. The most preferred colors are 2 reds, 2 blues, and 2 yellows; least preferred are a greenish yellow, a penetrating red-violet, and all 5 pinks. Significant sex differences were found for 8 colors.
