Predictive Capabilities of Nonhuman Operators in a Manual Control System

The requirement for a credible monkey-man extrapolation in the area of manual control systems led to the investigation of the predictor-operator phenomenon in rhesus monkeys performing in a manual control system. Two monkeys were trained to proficiency in a single-axis visual compensatory manual control system using a random (unpredictable) system input. Data were obtained for system performance in the random case. The system input was then changed to pure sinusoidal (predictable). Data were obtained for the sinusoidal case and compared with data for the random case. Unlike humans, monkeys were not able to improve system performance in the predictable versus unpredictable case.

The Crossover Model Applied to Nonhuman Operators

Two manual control systems with rhesus monkey operators have been studied using control theory techniques. The first control system was a single-axis compensatory task; the second was a dual-axis ground-based simulator. The present study summarizes the control theory analysis of these two previous experiments. The crossover model, developed for human operators in manual control systems, was successfully applied to these data. Results of the present study provide additional evidence for monkey-man extrapolation in the area of manual control.

Tilt psychophysics measured in nonhuman primates

A method to measure tilt psychophysics in nonhuman primates has been developed and tested. Two rhesus monkeys were trained to orient a light bar parallel to the direction of gravity by rotating a small steering wheel attached to the primate chair. After adequate training, they performed this task during motion paradigms that rotated the gravitoinertial force (GIF) in the roll plane. The animals accurately aligned the light bar with the direction of gravity during and following roll tilts. Subtle aspects of perceived roll tilt previously recorded in human subjects were also observed in the monkeys. During centrifugation and linear translation, an interaural inertial force rotates the GIF in the roll plane. Similar to humans, the animals' perceived direction of gravity shifted toward alignment with the GIF during these paradigms, and the dynamics of these shifts demonstrated an interaction between the otolith afferents that transduce the GIF and rotational cues from the semicircular canals. Finally, optokinetic roll stimulation induced an illusion of roll tilt that was dependent on head orientation, similar to results described in human subjects. Taken together, these findings validate the methodology employed to measure tilt psychophysics; the monkeys' responses were qualitatively similar to those described in human subjects and also recapitulated subtle aspects of the perceptual response observed in humans. This new methodology sets the stage for innovative experimental approaches that will help to elucidate the neural mechanisms underlying the perception of spatial orientation.

Development of interception of moving targets by chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) in an automated task

The experiments investigated how two adult captive chimpanzees learned to navigate in an automated interception task. They had to capture a visual target that moved predictably on a touch monitor. The aim of the study was to determine the learning stages that led to an efficient strategy of intercepting the target. The chimpanzees had prior training in moving a finger on a touch monitor and were exposed to the interception task without any explicit training. With a finger the subject could move a small "ball" at any speed on the screen toward a visual target that moved at a fixed speed either back and forth in a linear path or around the edge of the screen in a rectangular pattern. Initial ball and target locations varied from trial to trial. The subjects received a small fruit reinforcement when they hit the target with the ball. The speed of target movement was increased across training stages up to 38 cm/s. Learning progressed from merely chasing the target to intercepting the target by moving the ball to a point on the screen that coincided with arrival of the target at that point. Performance improvement consisted of reduction in redundancy of the movement path and reduction in the time to target interception. Analysis of the finger's movement path showed that the subjects anticipated the target's movement even before it began to move. Thus, the subjects learned to use the target's initial resting location at trial onset as a predictive signal for where the target would later be when it began moving. During probe trials, where the target unpredictably remained stationary throughout the trial, the subjects first moved the ball in anticipation of expected target movement and then corrected the movement to steer the ball to the resting target. Anticipatory ball movement in probe trials with novel ball and target locations (tested for one subject) showed generalized interception beyond the trained ball and target locations. The experiments illustrate in a laboratory setting the development of a highly complex and adaptive motor performance that resembles navigational skills seen in natural settings where predators intercept the path of moving prey.

A conveyor belt task for assessing visuo-motor coordination in the marmoset (Callithrix jacchus): effects of diazepam, chlorpromazine, pentobarbital and d-amphetamine

A conveyor belt task for assessing visuo-motor coordination in the marmoset is described. Animals are motivated by apple, a preferred food, under a state of minimal food deprivation. The apparatus used was designed to test animals within their home cages and not restrained in any way, thus avoiding possible confounding factors associated with restraint stress. Stable baseline levels of performance were reached by all animals in a median of 24 sessions. Performance was shown to be differentially sensitive to the effects of four psychoactive drugs. Moderate doses of diazepam, chlorpromazine and pentobarbital disrupted visuo-motor coordination in a dose-related manner. The possibility that disruption of performance observed at higher doses may have resulted from non-specific actions of these drugs such as decreases in feeding motivation were not supported by results from ancillary experiments. Changes in performance characteristic of high dose effects were similar in nature to changes observed when the degree of task difficulty was increased. Doses of d-amphetamine up to and including those reported to produce signs of stereotypy failed to influence performance. The potential of the conveyor belt task for measuring visuo-motor coordination in both primate and rodent species is discussed.
