Relationship between body image and percent body fat among college male varsity athletes and nonathletes

Body dissatisfaction and restrained eating in male juvenile and adult athletes

Athletes of light-weight sport classes are under a constant strain to control eating and body shape, which can make them prone to develop eating disorders. In the present study, cognitive control of eating (restrained eating) and body dissatisfaction were investigated in male elite athletes of light-weight and heavy-weight classes at different ages. Body dissatisfaction was assessed under hunger and satiety. Adult light-weight rowers had extremely high scores of restrained eating and a more pronounced body dissatisfaction under hunger compared to satiety in contrast to heavy-weight rowers. Juvenile light-weight rowers had a pronounced cognitive control of eating behavior while body dissatisfaction was not affected by weight-class or hunger. The results suggest that extensive participation in a light-weight sport increases the cognitive control of eating behavior but not the disinhibition of cognitive control of eating. High levels of cognitive control of eating in the adult lightweight rowers are accompanied with body dissatisfaction under hunger but not under satiety.

Men, muscles, and body image: comparisons of competitive bodybuilders, weight trainers, and athletically active controls

OBJECTIVES

To investigate body image and psychosocial adjustment among competitive bodybuilders, non-competitive weight trainers, and athletically active men.

METHODS

Participants were 40 men in each of the three groups who were assessed on body composition and multiple facets of body image evaluation, investment and anxiety, eating attitudes, and social self esteem.

RESULTS

Relative to the other two groups, competitive bodybuilders had greater body mass due to fat-free body mass. Although groups did not differ in their situational body image discomfort, competitive bodybuilders and weight trainers had a more positive global appearance evaluation and were more psychologically invested in their physical appearance. Compared with active controls, men in both weightlifting groups were more satisfied with their upper torso and muscle tone. Competitive bodybuilders reported more mid torso satisfaction than the other two groups. Competitive bodybuilders also wished to be significantly heavier than controls did and reported higher social self esteem but greater eating disturbance.

CONCLUSIONS

The findings suggest that competitive bodybuilders as a group are not more "muscle dysmorphic" than either non-competitive weight trainers or physically active men who do not train with weights.

Body esteem and body fat in British school children from different ethnic groups

The aim of the study was to examine the relationship between body esteem and body fat in British school children. Two hundred and seventy seven, 11-14-year-old children from central England took part in the study. Body esteem was measured using the Body Esteem Scale for children and percent body fat was determined by skin-fold measures. Results indicate that body esteem and adiposity were negatively related for the whole sample, for boys and girls and for White children, Black children and Asian children. Factorial ANOVA also indicated differences in body esteem according to gender and ethnicity. Boys and Black children had significantly higher body esteem than girls and Asian children respectively. Differences in body fat were also evident according to gender with boys being leaner than girls. No differences in body esteem or body fat were evident across school years.

Test-retest stability of body-image scores in a sample of 12- to 14-yr.-olds

The present study investigated test-retest variation in Body Image Questionnaire scores among a sample of British school children. 112 participants from three different school years (aged 12 to 14 years) completed the Body Image Questionnaire on two occasions separated by a 6-wk. period. No intervention designed to change perceptions of body shape took place, hence, tesr-retest scores should be stable. Analysis indicated a significantly greater variation among 12- and 13-yr-olds upon retest, but not for 14-yr.-olds. Research is needed investigating factorial and test-retest stability of the measure for use with children aged 12 or under.

Relationship of body composition to body-fatness estimation in Japanese university students

OBJECTIVE

To examine the relationship between self-estimated whole body size and fatness and whole body and regional composition, and the relationship between self-estimated whole body fatness and self-estimated regional fatness in Japanese university students.

RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES

This was a cross-sectional study using Japanese university students (110 men and 79 women). The percentage of body fat, fat mass (FM), and fat-free mass (FFM) were measured by underwater weighing and used as body composition variables. Subcutaneous fat thicknesses were determined at seven sites by ultrasonography to estimate regional body composition, and six circumferences and four breadths to estimate regional size. Relative body size and fatness were self-estimated using a questionnaire.

RESULTS

Only women tended to estimate themselves as being fatter than they actually were. Self-estimated body fatness moderately correlated with the percentage of body fat (men, r = 0.41; women, r = 0.40) FM (men, r = 0.50; women, r = 0.51), and body mass index (r = 0.56 for men and 0.56 for women). After adjusting for the percentages of body fat and FM, self-estimated fatness correlated with body mass index (r = 0.31 for men and r = 0.37 for women). Among self-estimated regional fatness, self-estimated abdominal fatness had the strongest correlation with self-estimated whole body fatness in both genders.

DISCUSSION

The low correlation between estimated and actual body fatness in both genders indicates that Japanese university students, especially women, inaccurately estimate their percentage of body fat. In fact, both men and women primarily estimate their whole body fatness by body weight relative to height.

Relationship between body image and percent body fat among British school children

The aim of the study was to examine the relationship between body image and percent body fat in British school children. A total of 223 11- to 14-yr.-old children from central England took part in the study. Body image was measured using a self-report questionnaire, and percent body fat was measured using skinfold indices. Analysis indicated that body image and adiposity were significantly (p<.01) related for the whole sample, for boys and girls and for White children, Black children, and Asian children. An analysis of variance further indicated significant differences in body image and adiposity between boys and girls, with boys having a more positive body image and a lower percent body fat. Differences (p<.05) were also evident between Black and Asian children, with Black children having a more positive body image and lower percent body fat. No differences were evident between Black and White children or Asian and White children.

The Effects of Wellness Education on the Body Image of College Students

The effects of a wellness education presentation on body image were investigated. Fifty-seven college men and women completed two questionnaires on body image; one before and one after undergoing skinfold measurement. The participants were divided into two groups: (a) receiving a wellness education program after being assessed, and (b) not receiving a wellness education program after being assessed. The data were analyzed with a multifactor randomized ANOVA. The body-image scores of noneducation group decreased significantly, with no difference between the sexes. The body-image scores of the education group did not decrease significantly for either gender. This study indicated that wellness education incorporated into body composition testing could minimize the negative effects of body composition knowledge on body image.

Chinese and American college students' body-image: perceived body shape and body affect

This study examined the differences in the measures of perception of body shape and body affect among Chinese and American college male and female students. 289 Chinese students in China and 180 American students in the United States voluntarily completed the Body-image Questionnaire, comprised of four categories: (a) anthropometric data, (b) self-perception of body shape, (c) body affect, and (d) desired body shape. American students were significantly more likely than Chinese students to perceive their body shapes as being larger, but both Chinese and American students tended to perceive their body shapes accurately. For body affect, both Chinese and American female students who perceived themselves as thin had positive feelings about their bodies, while both groups of female students who perceived themselves as heavy had negative feelings about their bodies. American women were more likely than Chinese women to have negative feelings about their bodies. American students also placed high value on muscular firmness as part of their ideal female body shape, while Chinese students added plumpness as another component for judging ideal female body shape. Both Chinese and American men valued physical strength as a major component for body satisfaction.

Relationship between body image and percent body fat among male and female college students enrolled in an introductory 14-week weight-training course

Students (39 men and 27 women) from a southern university, who were enrolled in a 14-wk. introductory weight-training course, were administered a 20-item body-image questionnaire and subsequently underwent skinfold measurements to assess percent body fat. Mean scores were correlated with percent body fat. For men, women, and both sexes combined correlations were significant and inverse (rs = -.68, -.41, -.66, respectively). Body image as measured was inversely related to percent body fat among these college students. Researchers should examine how dietary and exercise-induced changes in adiposity (pre-post design) influence scores on body image.
