Object-based and location-based shifting of attention in Parkinson's disease

Multiple cueing dissociates location- and feature-based repetition effects

There is an extensive literature on the phenomenon of inhibition of return (IOR): When attention is drawn to a peripheral location and then removed, response time is delayed if a target appears in the previously inspected location. Recent research suggests that non-spatial attribute repetition (i.e., if a target shares a feature like color with the earlier, cueing, stimulus) can have a similar inhibitory effect, at least when the target appears in the previously cued location. What remains unknown is whether location- and feature-based inhibitory effects can be dissociated. In the present study, we used a multiple cueing approach to investigate the properties of location- and feature-based repetition effects. In two experiments (detection, and discrimination), location-based IOR was absent but feature-based inhibition was consistently observed. Thus, the present results indicate that feature- and location-based inhibitory effects are dissociable. The results also provide support for the view that the attentional consequences of multiple cues reflect the overall center of gravity of the cues. We suggest that the repetition costs associated with feature and location repetition may be best understood as a consequence of the pattern of activation for object files associated with the stimuli present in the displays.

To the influence of general slowing and medication on identity- and location-based priming effects in patients with Parkinson's disease

Previous studies on inhibitory mechanisms assessed by negative priming (NP) paradigms in patients suffering from Parkinson's disease (PD) have yielded highly ambiguous results. The present study examined two possible reasons for this heterogeneity: general slowing and anti-Parkinsonian medication. Their effects on identity and location NP and positive priming (PP) were investigated. Twenty medicated PD patients and 20 PD patients after drug withdrawal were compared to 20 sex- and age-matched healthy controls. The influence of PD patients' general slowing on priming effects was statistically controlled. Location NP was found not to be affected by PD, whereas identity NP was reduced in medicated PD patients compared to non-medicated PD patients and healthy controls. At first, identity and location PP appeared to be enhanced in both PD groups. After controlling for general slowing, however, differences between PD patients and healthy controls disappeared. These findings endorse the notion that uncontrolled effects of both, PD-related general slowing and anti-Parkinsonian medication may have contributed to previously conflicting results on priming effects in PD patients.

Space-based but not object-based inhibition of return is impaired in Parkinson's disease

Impairments in certain aspects of attention have frequently been reported in Parkinson's disease (PD), including reduced inhibition of return (IOR). Recent evidence suggests that IOR can occur when attention is directed at objects or locations, but previous investigations of IOR in PD have not systematically compared these two frames of reference. The present study compared the performance of 18 nondemented patients with PD and 18 normal controls on an IOR task with two conditions. In the "object-present" condition, objects surrounded the cues and targets so that attention was cued to both a spatial location and to a specific object. In the "object-absent" condition, surrounding objects were not presented so that attention was cued only to a spatial location. When participants had to rely on space-based cues, PD patients demonstrated reduced IOR compared to controls. In contrast, when objects were present in the display and participants could use object-based cues, PD patients exhibited normal IOR. These results suggest that PD patients are impaired in inhibitory aspects of space-based attention, but are able to overcome this impairment when their attention can be directed at object-based frames of reference. This dissociation supports the view that space-based and object-based components of attention involve distinct neurocognitive processes.

Lack of impairment in patients with Parkinson's disease on an object-based negative priming task

12 nondemented patients with Parkinson's disease (M age = 67.3) and 12 normal control participants were administered an object-based attention task that enabled examination of both negative and positive priming. Unlike previous studies in which spatial-based attention tasks were used, results of the present study indicated that the patients displayed negative and positive priming not different from those shown by controls. These results suggest that certain object-based attentional processes may not be impaired in patients with Parkinson's disease.
