Awareness, Prevalence, and Knowledge of Dry Eye Among Internet Professionals: A Cross-sectional Study in China

OBJECTIVES

To investigate awareness, prevalence, and knowledge of dry eye among Internet professionals in China.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study was conducted among 1,265 randomly selected Internet professionals aged ≥18 years. A self-administered questionnaire was used to assess dry eye awareness, dry eye symptoms, and knowledge about dry eye risk factors. Data on demographics and complete medical history were also collected. The primary outcome was the rate of dry eye awareness determined by the answer to the question "Have you seen or heard anything about dry eye recently?"

RESULTS

Of the 1,265 included individuals aged 20 to 49 years, 519 (41.0%) were women. 54.4% (688 of 1,265) of participants had seen or heard something about dry eye recently and most had obtained information through Internet. 50.8% (643 of 1,265) of participants were identified as subjects with symptoms of dry eye. Dry eye awareness was greater in contact lens wearers (odds ratio [OR], 6.49; 95% confidence interval [CI], 3.70-11.38; P <0.001), those with a refractive surgical history (OR, 5.09; 95% CI, 2.34-11.08; P <0.001), relatives and/or friends of ophthalmologists (OR, 2.76; 95% CI, 1.39-5.49; P =0.004), those with symptoms of dry eye (OR, 1.87; 95% CI, 1.47-2.38; P <0.001) and female subjects (OR, 1.44; 95% CI, 1.13-1.86; P =0.004). Knowledge of nonmodifiable and modifiable risk factors for dry eye was poor in substantial numbers of the participants.

CONCLUSIONS

The level of dry eye awareness and knowledge of its risk factors is suboptimal in Internet professionals, although the Internet professionals are at high risk of the disease.

A dual-systems perspective on temporal cognition: Implications for the role of emotion

This commentary explores how emotion fits in the dual-systems model of temporal cognition proposed by Hoerl & McCormack. The updating system would be affected by emotion via the attentional/arousal effect according to the attentional gate model. The reasoning system would be disrupted by emotion, especially for traumatic events. Time discrepancies described in the dual-systems model are also explained.

Memory for time: how people date events

The effect of different formats on the accuracy of dating news and the distribution of personal events was examined in four conditions. In the first, participants had to date events in the absolute time format (e.g., "July 2004"), and in the second, they had to date events in the relative time format (e.g., "3 weeks ago"). In the other conditions, they were asked to choose between the two formats. We found a small backward telescoping effect for recent news events and a large forward telescoping effect for remote events. Events dated in the absolute time format were more accurate than those dated in the relative time format. Furthermore, participants preferred to date news events with the relative time format and personal events with the absolute time format, as well as preferring to date remote events in the relative time format and recent events in the absolute time format.

Some problems with life event lists and health outcomes

Lists of life events are widely used in health outcomes research. As part of a large cohort study of women's health in Australia, age- and gender-specific life events lists were developed and administered to women in different age groups over time. In this article, we provide empirical evidence that recall of life events is subject to telescoping (i.e., remote events are reported to have occurred more recently) and to mood (women with lower mental health scores report more life events, especially perceived rather than factual events). Nevertheless, even after adjustment for confounders, there is a clear association between poorer physical health and more life events. Therefore, these results demonstrate a continuing need for lists of life events in health research but also highlight the methodological challenges in using them.

A survey of breast cancer awareness and knowledge in a Western population: lots of light but little illumination

There are conflicting data on breast cancer awareness and knowledge in specific population groups. We assessed awareness and knowledge of breast cancer in the general Irish population to identify sources of information on breast cancer and determine factors associated with knowledge and awareness of the disease. Participants (n=2355, 53% female) completed a multi-part questionnaire. Most (81%) had seen or heard something about breast cancer in the recent past and knowledge of symptoms and treatment was good overall. However, 66% of females overestimated their risk of developing disease, 88% underestimated the age at which it was most likely to develop and 56% underestimated 5-year survival. Knowledge of incidence and survival was higher in males (Odds Ratio (OR) 1.3, 95% Confidence Interval (CI); 1.1-1.5), participants with higher education (1.5; 1.2-1.7) and those who received information from television (1.3; 1.1-1.5). Ignorance regarding incidence, outcome and risk makes it unlikely that the general public or at risk females could currently make informed decisions on a range of breast cancer issues.

On feeling negative past as a part of current self: subjective temporal organization of autobiographical memories

When a past event is remembered, the subjective elapsed time is often different from the objective elapsed time, even if the exact date of an event is known. In this study, Feeling of Time Discrepancy between objective elapsed time and subjective elapsed time of turning point events was examined. Participants remembered one turning point event in life, dated the event, and estimated the Feeling of Time Discrepancy. Two groups, formed on their judgement of whether their present understanding of the event is the same or different from understanding when the event occurred (the Same assessment group and the Different assessment group). Analysis showed the Different assessment group felt the turning point event to be more recent than the Same assessment group did, although there was no difference between actual elapsed time and memory vividness for the two groups. In addition, the events which changed from negative to positive were felt subjectively to be more recent than those for which affect was consistently positive. These results suggest that, even if we experience negative events, the event might become a part of the present self and be felt temporally closer to now, when temporal organization of autobiographical memories allow recognition of the event as good experience. Finally, two types of temporal organization of such memory were discussed, the subjective temporal organization of autobiographical memory which is organized only for oneself and the social objective temporal organization of autobiographical memory which becomes organized in sharing it with another person.
