The Function of Connection: Examining Social Supports in the Lives of Parentally Bereaved Youth

Through reflexive thematic analysis, this study explored three forms of social support in the lives of parentally bereaved youth: support derived from one's spirituality, caregiver support via parent-child communication, and therapist support from grief counseling (N = 30 youth, Mage = 12.5 years, SD = 2.8 years). Results showed that these sources of support serve varied and vital functions in the lives of parentally bereaved youth. Namely, the benefits of grief counseling and spirituality were consistently identified by youth as critical in facilitating their coping with the loss of a parent; while parent-child communication regarding the deceased varied widely, highlighting the need for additional supports beyond their surviving caregiver. Findings also revealed differences among these supports across youth gender, race, ethnicity, and age. Adolescents were more likely to disengage from counseling services and reported less parental and spiritual support. Males and minoritized youth experienced more benefits from spiritual and therapist supports.

The Effect of Emergency Nurses' Psychological Resilience on Their Thanatophobic Behaviors: A Cross-Sectional Study

PURPOSE

This study analyzed the effect of emergency nurses' psychological resilience on their thanatophobic behaviors.

METHODS

The research was conducted with 156 emergency nurses. In the data collection process, the Socio-Demographic Information Form, the Brief Resilience Scale, and the Thanatophobia Scale were used.

RESULTS

It was found that emergency nurses had medium-level psychological resilience and high-level thanatophobia. Besides, it was discerned that there was a moderate negative relationship between psychological resilience and thanatophobia (r:-.643, p: 0.000). Lastly, as per the simple linear regression analysis, it was identified that the predictor variable of psychological resilience accounted for 40.9% of the variance in the predicted variable of thanatophobia (R2:.409, p: 0.000).

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

Emergency nurses, who are faced with many negative situations, need to have a high level of psychological resilience in order to get out of the mental state brought by negative conditions as soon as possible, and it is recommended to carry out applications to increase psychological resilience.

Living with a parent with dementia: A family resilience study

The aim of this study was to identify factors associated with family resilience in families caring for a parent with dementia. A mixed-methods approach was followed to collect data from a convenience sample drawn from the Cape Metropolitan area in the Western Cape, South Africa. The study sample comprised 47 families in which adult children were caring for a parent with dementia. The quantitative data analysis was conducted using analyses of variance (ANOVA), Pearson's product-moment correlation coefficients and a best-subsets multiple regression analysis. Qualitative data were analysed using thematic content analysis. It was found that acceptance, optimism, positive communication patterns, family connectedness, spirituality, social support, economic resources and the effective management of symptoms helped these families adapt to the burdens of dementia care. In addition to expanding the literature regarding family resilience, the findings could be used to develop interventions tailored to the needs of these families caring for a parent with dementia to create a family environment that enhances adjustment and adaptation.
