Defendant mental illness and juror decision-making: A comparison of sample types

Two studies were conducted with separate student and community samples to explore the effect of sample types and the influence of defendant mental illness on juror decision-making. Following the completion of a pre-trial questionnaire in which jurors' attitudes towards mental illness were assessed, participants were provided with a robbery trial transcript, wherein the mental illness of the defendant was manipulated. Participants then answered a questionnaire to assess their knowledge of the scenario, their verdict, verdict confidence, and sentencing decision. Limited relationships were found between the variables in both Study 1 and Study 2. Neither attitude ratings nor mental illness type had a significant effect on juror decisions. Samples differed in terms of the paths through which juror decisions were achieved. Findings suggest that sample type may be particularly relevant for this topic of study, and that future research is required on legal proceedings for cases involving a defendant with a mental illness.

Differences in attitudes toward patients among medical specialties

In a prior study a questionnaire was developed which reliably measured a variety of physicians' attitudes toward patients. In the present study we have used this questionnaire to compare the attitudes of physicians specializing in Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics and Psychiatry with one another and with a group of medical students. One way analyses of variance yielded highly significant differences (p less than .001) among these groups on the "Nurturant-Empathic" attitudinal dimension, as well as on the "Psychodynamic" and "Moral Weakness" Etiology Scales. Significance and ramifications of these findings are discussed in terms of the impact of these attitudes on treatment approach, clinical decision-making, and quality and comprehensiveness of patient care. Further, these findings suggest that a variety of education and training approaches could be advantageously utilized to integrate and upgrade the care of patients by the different medical specialties.

A comparison of the community psychology and medical models: teaching attitudes toward deviance to high school students

There is increased recognition of the importance of early intervention as part of a comprehensive system of community psychology. Moreover, emphasis on intervention at the system level is recommended to maximize effectiveness. However, in designing early intervention system-related programs, the content of the intervention is a critical, though often ignored, feature. This study compared a traditional medical model content with a community psychology-oriented content in teaching attitudes toward deviance to high school students. Results indicated that the significant changes in attitudes differed markedly between groups exposed to the divergent explanatory models, and that, in general, the community psychology model produced more favorable outcomes.
