Threat as a determinant of alcohol-related aggression

A random sample of more than 15,000 undergraduate students from 130 4-year colleges answered a mailed questionnaire concerning firearm possession. Approximately 3.5% of the sampled students reported they had a working firearm at college. Students with guns were more likely to be male, White, or Native American; to binge drink and need to start the day with alcohol; to be members of a fraternity or sorority; to live off campus; and to live with a spouse or significant other. Having a gun was positively associated with driving after binge drinking, being arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, and damaging property as a result of alcohol ingestion. Students with guns were also more likely to be injured severely enough to require medical attention, especially for injuries occurring in fights or car crashes. Overall, students with guns at college were more likely than others to engage in activities that put themselves and others at risk for injury.

Is there a causal relationship between alcohol use and violence? A synthesis of evidence

This chapter reviews the evidence bearing on the question of whether those individuals who consume alcohol have an increased probability of subsequent violent behavior. Four bodies of relevant research are examined: experimental studies with animals, experimental studies with humans, individual-level correlational studies, and macro-level correlational studies. All these research approaches provide some evidence of an association between alcohol consumption and violent behavior, but no firm conclusion can be drawn about whether alcohol plays a causal role in such behavior. Various limitations, deficiencies, and ambiguities of available research that contribute to this state of affairs are discussed.

The relationship of alcohol to injury in assault cases

Little is known about the precise role of alcohol in the escalation of interactions from threats into physical violence or its contribution to the risk of injury. Experimental studies indicate that intoxicated subjects (allegedly) give markedly higher electric shocks than sober subjects and are less sensitive to their cries of pain. However, few studies in a naturalistic setting have examined whether aggressive acts become more serious and result in higher injury rates when the assailants have been drinking than when they are sober. This chapter reviews the two bodies of research on the effects of alcohol on interpersonal aggression and violence; presents new data on the escalation of threatening interactions to assaults and the likelihood of victim injury given an assault, using data from the National Crime Victimization Survey for the years 1992 and 1993; and suggests future directions for research based on our findings that alcohol's impact on both escalation and injury differed according to the victim-assailant relationship.

Public Drinking and Violence: Not Just an Alcohol Problem

Three hundred hours of unstructured observation by pairs of observers in twenty-three licensed premises in Sydney allowed the identification through qualitative analysis of situational factors and management practices that increase the risk of physical violence. Four high-risk and two low-risk premises were particularly contrasted, as were violent and non-violent occasions in the same venues. Violence was concentrated in' specific places at specific times. It was related to complex interactions between aspects of patron mix, levels of comfort, boredom, and intoxication, and the behaviour of bouncers. Violence is perpetuated by poor management, lax police surveillance, and inappropriate bureaucratic controls and legislation. The authors conclude that regularly violent venues should have their licenses cancelled, and police should enforce laws regulating bouncers. Promotions which cause mass intoxication should be banned, but responsible serving practices on their own may not greatly influence levels of violence.

Aggressive and nonaggressive behavior as a function of alcohol intoxication and frustration in women

An experiment tested whether alcohol increases aggression in women in a situation in which both an aggressive and a nonaggressive response alternative of equal instrumentality and of equal variability are available. Subjects were assigned to one of three groups, namely, an alcohol, a placebo, or a control group. The alcohol dose was 1.0 ml of pure alcohol/kg body weight. After drinking their respective drink, subjects were instructed to supervise a bogus partner on a visual scan test over a series of trials. Each time this partner made a mistake, subjects could either give an uncomfortable electric shock (scale 1 to 10) or a comfortable vibration (scale 1 to 10) to the partner. Aggressive and nonaggressive behavior was measured as numbers, intensities, and durations of shocks or vibrations, respectively. Neither alcohol nor frustration differentiated the groups on aggressive or nonaggressive behavior. All groups were significantly more inclined to use the nonaggressive alternative irrespective of alcohol dose and level of frustration. In conclusion it was stated that women do not increase their aggression as a function of alcohol in a situation with more than one response alternative available. The need to incorporate gender differences as to aggressive effects of alcohol was stressed.

Changes in the psychological defence system as a function of alcohol intoxication in men

Social drinking young men participated in an experiment exploring whether acute alcohol intoxication affects the characteristics of the psychological defence structure. It was found that a moderate alcohol dose (1.0 ml of 100% alcohol/kg body weight) increased the overall level of defence activity compared to a sober Control group and as measured by the Defence Mechanism Test. This increase was mainly due to a significant increase in the defence mechanism Isolation. Gender differences in this respect and the implications of this shift in the defence structure for the understanding of intoxicated behavior and motives for drinking were discussed.

The structure of psychological defense mechanisms in women as a function of alcohol intoxication

The present experiment tested whether moderate alcohol intoxication influences the relative strength of different psychoanalytic defense mechanisms and whether the overall level of defense activity is changed. Thirty-six women were randomly assigned to either an alcohol, a placebo, or a control group. The alcohol dose was 1.0 ml of 100% alcohol/kg body weight. Subjects were tested with the Defense Mechanism Test (DMT), which gives a valid measure of both elaborate or late and primitive or early defense mechanisms. Results indicated no significant effects of alcohol intoxication on any aspect of the defense system. This was taken as supportive of the psychoanalytic notion in respect of the stability of the defense system. Possible complications were discussed.

Human physical aggression as a function of magnitude of frustration: indirect support and a possible confounding influence

An experiment was performed to test whether thwarting close to the goal leads to higher levels of frustration and higher levels of aggression than thwarting far from the goal in a slightly modified version of the Buss' "aggression machine." Subjects first calibrated a shock scale and were then put in a situation in which they could give electric shocks to a confederate under an acceptable pretext. It was not possible to confirm the specific hypothesis directly but a positive correlation was found between over-all self-rated subjective frustration and a measure of total aggression supporting a general frustration-aggression hypothesis. However, it was also found that the initial calibration of the shock scale correlated positively with the measure of total aggression, indicating the possible confounding influences are operative in this kind of paradigm.

Alcohol and the validation of experimental aggression paradigms: the Taylor reaction time procedure

The aim was to find out whether intoxicated and sober subjects would calibrate a shock scale to the same objective level and whether shocks received would be subjectively experienced in the same way in terms of pain and discomfort. The intention was also to replicate previous studies attributing an aggression enhancing effect to alcohol. The subjective ratings were made within the Taylor reaction time 'aggression machine'. Twenty-four subjects were randomly assigned to either an alcohol or a control group. The former drank 0.8 ml of pure alcohol/kg body wt. Results indicated no differences among groups on a shock setting measure of aggression under unprovoked or provoked conditions and no differences in level of calibration of shocks or in subjective ratings of pain and discomfort. These results were contrary to all predictions and are discussed as indirectly supportive of an hypothesis stating that this version of the 'aggression machine' may not generate a valid measure of aggression when used in alcohol research.

Beer intoxication and physical aggression in males

Twenty subjects participated in an experiment testing the effects of a moderate dose of beer on physical aggression. Subjects were randomly assigned to a beer drinking group or a control group. Aggression was measured in terms of number of shocks given, shock intensity, and shock duration in a modified version of the Buss' aggression machine. There were no differences among groups and there was no interaction of beer by frustration on aggression. The results are explained in terms of expectancies held by subjects as to the effects of beer intoxication on behaviour.

Effects of beer and wine on male aggression as measured by a paper-and-pen test

Two experiments were performed testing whether alcohol in the form of beer and wine would increase aggression measured on a self-rating aggression inventory. No significant differences among sober and intoxicated subjects were obtained either for beer or wine. This result was discussed in terms of specific beverage-type effects on aggression, in terms of blood alcohol level, and in terms of the response measure used.

Alcohol and unpleasant stimulation: subjective shock calibration and pain and discomfort perception

In an experiment 8 men participated in an alcohol and a sober condition in a rotated order. In both conditions subjects first calibrated a shock scale to a subjective criterion and then rated their subjective pain and total discomfort. Subjects calibrated the shock scale higher when intoxicated and rated the calibrated level equally painful in the sober and intoxicated conditions, but when intoxicated subjects actually rated the higher shock level as less uncomfortable. The shock scale was calibrated higher under intoxication not because subjects wanted to impress the experimenter but because less pain and discomfort was actually experienced.

Alcohol, frustration, and aggression: an experiment using the balanced placebo design

In a balanced placebo experiment it was hypothesized that pharmacological effects of alcohol would override expectancy effects and that alcohol would increase aggression only under frustrative conditions by a process of an exaggerated subjective experience of frustration. In a modified “aggression-machine” frustration was defined as arbitrary and manipulated in a within-subjects fashion. Manipulation checks indicated difficulties in deceiving subjects as to the content of the drink, and it was not possible to evaluate pure pharmacological effects. Ratings of subjective frustration did not differentiate experimental groups. Only during frustrative conditions did intoxicated subjects increase their aggression regardless of information about drink's content. Frustration per se and expectancy factors did not lead to increased aggression. This was explained in terms of a more narrow focusing on outstanding available response alternatives and as opposed to the 1983 Taylor and Leonard explanation of alcohol-increased aggression.
