Emotional Regulation in Individuals, Standing in Codependent Relationship

The article presents the research of the emotion regulation in women standing in relationships with addicted partners. It also provides additional results of adaptation of the “Spann–Fischer Codependency Scale” (SF CDS). The sample of the study consisted of women living together with addicted individuals (N=154) aged from 24 to 60 years (M=46,18, SD=8,72). SF CDS showed high reliability indicators. Spenn–Fisher's theoretical model of codependency has been empirically validated CMIN=79,4, df=62; CMIN/df=1,28; p=0,067; AGFI=0,956; RMSEA=0,026; SRMR=0,034. Construct validity tests showed higher rates of codependency in the sample of women who are in relationships with addicts compared to the sample of students. Structural model of the influence of emotion regulation on the severity of codependency is presented. It is shown that the degree of codependency depends on the ability to regulate emotions sufficiently. The exaggeration of the likelihood of a bad outcome of the situation ("catastrophization") and the tendency to mentally fixate on negative events and one's own feelings ("rumination") increase the severity of the state of codependency. The strategy of positive refocusing, as well as the ability to reappraise the meaning of the situation, contribute to the prevention of codependency.

Six-Month Outcomes of a Randomized, Motivational Tele-intervention for Change in the Codependent Behavior of Family Members of Drug Users

Families of substance abusers may develop maladaptive strategies, such as codependency, to address drug-related problems. It is important for families to receive specialist treatment in order to contribute to the recovery process. The Tele-intervention Model and Monitoring of Families of Drug Users (TMMFDU), based on motivational interviewing and stages of change, aims to encourage the family to change the codependents' behaviors. A randomized clinical trial was carried out to verify the change in codependent behavior after intervention with 6 months of follow-up. Three hundred and twenty-five families with high or low codependency scores were randomized into the intervention group (n = 163) or the usual treatment (UT) (n = 162). After 6 months of follow-up, the family members of the TMMFDU group were twice as likely to modify their codependency behavior when compared to the UT group (OR 2.08 CI 95% 1.18-3.65). TMMFDU proved to be effective in changing codependent behaviors among compliant family members of drug users.

Test-retest reliability of the Holyoake Codependency Index with Australian students

The Holyoake Codependency Index is a 13-item self-report measure of three aspects of codependency: External Focus, Self-sacrifice, and a sense of being overwhelmed by another person's problematic behavior (termed Reactivity). Previous studies have supported internal validity and the internal consistency and construct validity of the subscales. The present scores for 59 students indicate full scale test-retest reliability of .88 and for subscales (.76 to .82) over a 3-wk. interval.

The Holyoake Codependency Index: further evidence of factorial validity

The Holyoake Codependency Index (HCI) is a 13-item self-report scale that measures codependent traits. The HCI contains three subscales that correspond to key themes within the codependency literature and that were derived from factor analysis using a clinical sample of mainly females. The factor structure was subsequently replicated with an all-female general community sample. In this study the factor structure was replicated using a mixed-sex sample of 107 undergraduate university students and 378 other people who were snowball sampled from the student sample, and was found to hold for both male and female participants.
