Relationships between pathological narcissism and maladaptive personality traits among older adults

Objectives: The Pathological Narcissism Inventory (PNI) is a measure of narcissism, with two domains of Vulnerability and Grandiosity, that has limited evidence of validity among older adults. Subsequently, the objective of the present study was to examine relationships between the PNI and measures of diverse pathological personality features.Method: Participants consisted of 125 community-dwelling older adults (M age = 71.8 years) who completed the PNI, the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID-5), and the Coolidge Axis II Inventory (CATI).Results: Total Narcissism, Vulnerability, and Grandiosity were significantly correlated with every PD scale, with the exception of Grandiosity with Schizotypal PD. Regression analyses revealed that Narcissistic and Avoidant PDs had the strongest relationships with the PNI. Total Narcissism was also significantly correlated with all five PID-5 domains, with regression indicating Negative Affect and Antagonism as the strongest predictors.Conclusions: Findings generally support the convergent validity of the PNI for use among older adults and suggest that pathological narcissism may be related to general personality pathology in later life.

Examining the Dark Tetrad and Its Links to Cyberbullying

Cyberbullying is a growing problem in the fast-evolving world of social media. Although this problem has been studied extensively, there is relatively little research examining it from the angle of the dark tetrad (i.e., psychopathy, Machiavellianism, sadism, and narcissism), especially across different ethnicities. In other words, this research makes original contribution by exploring the predictive ability of the dark tetrad traits in individuals of different ethnicities and their subsequent willingness to engage in cyberbullying. The study (n = 1,464) explores whether there is a positive association between the dark tetrad personality traits and cyberbullying. The results reveal that all four traits predict cyberbullying in participants from across three different ethnicities (Asian, black, and white). Furthermore, female participants score less than their male counterparts across all four traits. Researchers, academics, and legislators might potentially benefit from this research by considering focusing their interventions on helping offenders minimize the display of certain personality traits, thus taking steps toward cyberbullying reduction.

Perfectionism, narcissism, and depression in suicidal and nonsuicidal adolescent inpatients

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between 2 psychological profiles: (a) the intrapersonal profile, involving self-critical depression, self-oriented perfectionism, and narcissism, and (b) the interpersonal profile, involving dependent depression and socially prescribed perfectionism, and the association of these 2 profiles with suicidal behavior among adolescent inpatients.

METHODS

One hundred adolescents, admitted to a university-affiliated psychiatric adolescent inpatient unit in Israel, completed the Depressive Experience Questionnaire for Adolescents, the Child and Adolescent Perfectionism Scale, and the Narcissistic Personality Inventory. The Suicidal Potential Interview was used to evaluate suicidal behavior and separate them into low-risk and high-risk groups.

RESULTS

Dependent depression correlated positively and significantly with severity of suicidal behavior. Adolescent inpatients with high levels of suicidal behavior (n = 54) were more dependent in terms of depression and were more inclined to socially prescribed perfectionism compared with adolescent inpatients with low levels of suicidal behavior (n = 45). The components of the intrapersonal profile did not correlate with severity of suicidal behavior; however, low narcissism scores characterized the psychological function that strongly predicted severe suicidal behavior.

CONCLUSIONS

The findings indicated that the conceptualization of 2 broad intrapersonal and interpersonal profiles in adolescent inpatients may have some validity in terms of the interpersonal dimension. The components of the interpersonal profile related to severe suicidal behavior and may be important in planning treatment strategy.

Depersonalization and individualism: the effect of culture on symptom profiles in panic disorder

It has been proposed that highly individualistic cultures confer vulnerability to depersonalization. To test this idea, we carried out a comprehensive systematic review of published empirical studies on panic disorder, which reported the frequency of depersonalization/derealization during panic attacks. It was predicted that the frequency of depersonalization would be higher in Western cultures and that a significant correlation would be found between the frequency of depersonalization and individualism scores of the participant countries. As predicted, the frequency of depersonalization during panic was significantly lower in nonwestern countries. There was also a significant correlation between frequency of depersonalization and Individualism (rho = 0.68, p < 0.0001), and between fears of losing control (rho = 0.57, p = 0.005) and individualism. These findings are interpreted in light of recent studies suggesting that individualistic cultures are characterized by hypersensitivity to threat and by an external locus of control. Two features may be relevant in the genesis of depersonalization.

Differences in self-reported health among Asians, Latinos, and non-Hispanic whites: the role of language and nativity

PURPOSE

Self-reported overall health (SROH) is often used to compare the health status of multi-ethnic populations in the United States. SROH may not be comparable across cultural groups. We assessed if differences in SROH between non-Hispanic whites (NHW), Latinos, and Asians were explained primarily by differences in socioeconomic status (SES) or language and nativity.

METHODS

We used cross-sectional data on 36,660 NHW, 9399 Latinos, 1298 Chinese, 944 Filipinos, 803 Koreans, 857 Vietnamese, and 1036 "other Asians" from the 2001 California Health Interview Survey.

RESULTS

Compared with NHW, all ethnic groups were less likely to report "excellent" or "very good" health. Latinos, Chinese, Filipinos, Koreans, and Vietnamese were also more likely to report "fair" or "poor" health. Adjusting for SES attenuated these differences for Latinos but did not explain the effect of being Asian on SROH. Among all ethnicities, individuals with limited English proficiency had worse SROH than individuals who were English-proficient.

CONCLUSIONS

Differences in SROH between Asians and NHW do not appear to be mediated by SES and may be due to different perceptions of health that are rooted in culture and language. There remains a need for health status measures less susceptible to cultural bias in Asian and Latino populations.
