Evaluation of the Isometric and Dynamic Rates of Force Development in Multi-Joint Muscle Actions

The Multi-Component Structure of Core Strength

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES

Core strength diagnostics often focus on measuring core endurance rather than maximal core strength or core power. This study investigates whether core strength can be considered as a general ability that can be measured by a single core strength test or whether it needs to be differentiated into several components.

METHODS

Forty-two adult sports students (nfemale = 20; nmale = 22; age: 24.0 ± 2.9 years; body height: 179.0 ± 9.8 cm; body mass: 75.2 ± 12.7 kg; body fat: 18.0 ± 6.8%) participated in two randomized testing sessions in a laboratory setting. Standard measurements, such as peak rate of force development (pRFD), maximal voluntary contraction (MVC), and holding time, were taken isometrically during four exercises (ventral, dorsal, and lateral right and left).

RESULTS

A principal component analysis (PCA) extracted three principal components from twelve different core strength variables. The three identified components explained 73.3% of the total variance and were labeled as (a) maximal core strength, (b) core endurance, and (c) core power.

CONCLUSIONS

The results suggest three principal components of the core strength construct, as well as their differentiation, may be imperative. These findings should be taken into account in sport science and sports practice as they may be helpful in planning sport-specific diagnostic, performance-oriented training, and injury prevention programs.

Myobolica: A Stochastic Approach to Estimate Physiological Muscle Control Variability

The inherent redundancy of the musculoskeletal systems is traditionally solved by optimizing a cost function. This approach may not be correct to model non-adult or pathological populations likely to adopt a "non-optimal" motor control strategy. Over the years, various methods have been developed to address this limitation, such as the stochastic approach. A well-known implementation of this approach, Metabolica, samples a wide number of plausible solutions instead of searching for a single one, leveraging Bayesian statistics and Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithm, yet allowing muscles to abruptly change their activation levels. To overcome this and other limitations, we developed a new implementation of the stochastic approach (Myobolica), adding constraints and parameters to ensure the identification of physiological solutions. The aim of this study was to evaluate Myobolica, and quantify the differences in terms of width of the solution band (muscle control variability) compared to Metabolica. To this end, both muscle forces and knee joint force solutions bands estimated by the two approaches were compared to one another, and against (i) the solution identified by static optimization and (ii) experimentally measured knee joint forces. The use of Myobolica led to a marked narrowing of the solution band compared to Metabolica. Furthermore, the Myobolica solutions well correlated with the experimental data (R 2 = 0.92 , RMSE = 0.3 BW), but not as much with the optimal solution (R 2 = 0.82 , RMSE = 0.63 BW). Additional analyses are required to confirm the findings and further improve this implementation.

Effects of different phenylcapsaicin doses on neuromuscular activity and mechanical performance in trained male subjects: a randomized, triple-blinded, crossover, placebo-controlled trial

Objective: This study aimed to examine the effects of phenylcapsaicin (PC) supplementation on strength performance and neuromuscular activity in young trained male subjects. Materials and methods: A total of 25 trained subjects [full-squat (SQ) one repetition maximum (1RM) = 125.6 ± 21.0 kg] were enrolled in this randomized, triple-blinded, crossover, placebo-controlled trial. The subjects performed a first session and a post-24 h session for each condition. In the first session, the subjects ingested a high dose of PC (HD, 2.5 mg), a low dose (LD, 0.625 mg), or a placebo (PLA). Their performance in SQ was assessed under a 3% × 8 × 70% 1RM protocol in the first session. Their performances in countermovement jump (CMJ), SQ with 60% 1RM, and isometric squat were measured before and after the SQ protocol in both sessions. The neural activity of the vastus lateralis (VL) and vastus medialis (VM) was recorded via surface electromyography (EMG) and averaged in both sessions. Results: Significant differences between the conditions were reported for lifting velocity, velocity loss, and the 60% load in dynamic SQ (p range = 0.02-0.04). Electrical changes were not identified for any outcome, although neural activity changed across time (p range ≤0.001-0.006). A significant condition × time effect was observed in CMJ compared to PLA (p ≤0.001) and LD (p ≤0.001). Intra-set analyses revealed higher velocities in HD compared to those in LD (p = 0.01) and PLA (p range = 0.004-0.008). Conclusion: Therefore, PC may improve the strength performance and attenuate the mechanical fatigue induced by resistance training in SQ and CMJ exercises.

Influence of muscle strength, power, and rapid force capacity on maximal club head speed in male national level golfers

This study investigated the relationships between maximal club head speed (CHS) and physiological and anthropometric parameters in 21 national-level male golfers (age: 21.9 ± 3.9 years; handicap: +1.1 ± 1.7). Maximal isometric strength (MVC) was measured during isometric mid-thigh pull and bench press, while MVC and rate of force development (RFD) were measured during isometric leg press. Power, lower limb stiffness, positive impulse, jump height and RFDdyn were measured during countermovement jump (CMJ). Moreover, rotational trunk power, active range of motion (AROM) and anthropometrics were determined. Comparisons were made between participants with high (FTG) and low (STG) CHS, respectively. FTG demonstrated greater isometric mid-thigh pull and isometric bench press MVC, leg press RFD, rotational trunk power, and CMJ parameters (except RFDdyn) as well as reduced hip AROM compared to STG (P < 0.01). CHS was positively correlated to isometric mid-thigh pull and isometric bench press MVC, leg press RFD, rotational trunk power and CMJ parameters (P < 0.01). In conclusion, strong positive correlations were observed between maximal CHS and maximal strength and power parameters. Consequently, improving maximal neuromuscular strength and power may be considered of importance for golfers, as greater CHS and accompanying driving distance may lead to competitive advantages.
