Assessment of the effects of solvents on lung function among paint industry workers in Mauritius

The study aimed to determine the respiratory effects of solvents among workers in the Mauritius paint industry. A total of 388 participants were selected using simple random sampling, and were subjected to a questionnaire for data collection. Lung function test was performed using a spirometer. Multiple regression was used to analyze the relationship between hours of exposure to solvents, while adjusting for socio-demographic factors. Independent t-test was also used to identify any difference between the means of lung function tests and the two exposed groups. Male participants were found less likely exposed to solvents compared to females (AOR, 3.39, CI 1.97-5.81). Those with secondary and lower secondary education, and worked for ≤12 hours per week, had an increased likelihood of being exposed to solvents (AOR 2.95, CI 1.20-7.28) (AOR 2.48, CI 1.19-5.16). Participants who were aware of occupational hazards (AOR 0.15, CI (0.05-0.46), and have used PPE (AOR 0.14, CI 0.08-0.25) were less likely to be less exposed to solvents. This study highlights the adverse effects of workplace exposures on respiratory health among paint factory workers. .

Study protocol to determine the effects of solvents on lung function among paint industry workers in Mauritius: A cross-sectional study

Background

The effects of exposure to solvents in paints have been widely studied, but very little information is at hand with only a small number of studies carried out on pulmonary function of paint industry workers. The aim of this study is to determine the respiratory effects of exposure to solvents among workers of the paint industry in Mauritius.

Design and methods

A quantitative cross-sectional study will be conducted in three paint factories across Mauritius. 388 participants would be selected using simple random sampling and be subjected to a pre-designed questionnaire for data collection. Lung function test using a spirometer will also be conducted. Data analysis will be performed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS v26.0). The exposed workers will be classified by shift duration, that is, individuals with weekly solvent exposure of ≤12 and >12 h respectively. Using multivariable regression analysis, odds ratio will be calculated to analyze the relationship between the dependent variable (hours of exposure to solvents) and independent variables while adjusting for socio-demographic factors. Independent t-test will also be used to identify any difference between the means of lung function tests and the two exposure groups. Based on pre-observation in the three paint industries, it is anticipated that male workers could be found less likely to be exposed to solvents as compared to female workers. Also, workers with a level of education below secondary and lower secondary categories could have a higher likelihood of being exposed ≤12 h/week shift. Those who are aware of occupational hazards and could indicate to have used personal protective equipment (PPE) could be less likely exposed to solvents.

Expected Impact of the study for Public Health

This study has been approved by the Ethics Committee of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Johannesburg- ethics clearance number: REC-919-2021. The results of this study will be made available to all stakeholders involved in Health and Safety in the Mauritius. Meetings with professional in the field, especially the concerned paint factories, have been arranged to discuss the impact of solvent exposure and propose remedial actions to protect the workers.

Relationship between self-reported residential indoor remodeling and semen quality: a case-control study

The present study examined the association between residential indoor remodeling and poor semen quality. Sperm donors aged 18–45 years old were recruited in Shanghai, China. Semen specimens were collected and analyzed. An in-person interview was conducted to obtain information on the history of indoor remodeling and potential confounders. A total of 70 participants with abnormal semen quality (case group) and 68 controls were examined. A total of 20 subjects reported indoor remodeling in the recent 24 months, and among them 17 subjects reported indoor remodeling in the recent 12 months. Compared with participants with no history of indoor remodeling, participants with a history of indoor remodeling in the recent 24 months were more than three times as likely to have poor sperm quality (adjusted odds ratio = 3.8, 95% confidence interval: 1.3–12.0) after controlling for potential confounders. The association was strengthened when the analysis was restricted to those who had indoor remodeling in the recent 12 months. Our findings provide preliminary evidence that indoor remodeling has an adverse effect on semen quality.

Benzene-contaminated toluene and acute myeloid leukemia: a case series and review of literature

We report seven cases of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) with occupational exposure to a toluene-based hydrocarbon solvent. The cases were employed at a facility, which manufactured rubber belts and hoses, between 1950 and 2005 for periods ranging from 21 to 37 total years. Detailed histories were obtained for three workers who were diagnosed with AML within a 3-year period (2003-2005). Death certificates, medical records, and accounts by workers were reviewed. Benzene, a known cause of AML, is typically a contaminant of toluene. Benzene contamination in toluene and other widely used solvents and the potential for concurrent benzene exposure during usage of these solvents in occupational settings are discussed.

Evaluation of neuropsychological symptoms and exposure to benzene, toluene and xylene among two different furniture worker groups in Izmir

This study was conducted to determine whether there was any exposure to toluene, xylene and benzene and to assess the health impact of these solvents on workers in furniture enterprises in Karabaglar, Izmir. This cross-sectional study covered furniture enterprises in Karabaglar, Izmir. This study was comprised of an exposed group consisting of workers engaged in painting and varnishing and therefore exposed either directly or indirectly toluene, xylene and benzene in the workplace and the non-exposed group engaged in other aspects of production. While a total of 261 individuals completed questionnaires, 210 workers agreed to provide blood samples. Blood solvents levels were determined using gas chromatograph at Ege University, Intoxication Research and Application Centre. The modified EUROQUEST questionnaire was used to assess neuropsychological symptoms and neurological and general examination were performed. Occupational and exposure history, demographic and work-related information was collected. In this study of workers, blood toluene and benzene levels were found to be significantly higher among those engaged in painting and varnishing compared to those who perform other tasks. The average blood toluene and benzene concentrations among exposed workers were 6.95 times and 1.64 times respectively higher than those in the nonexposed groups. Smokers and participants who worked in excess of 8 hours/day had higher blood toluene and benzene levels. The most frequently work-related health complaints were back pain, allergies and asthma. No differences were found in the average scores in the neuropsychological symptoms questionnaire between exposed and non-exposed groups. Neurological examination of two individuals with these complaints revealed a loss of reflexes. The workers were unaware that they were being exposed to solvents at work. Tobacco smoke is a major source of internal exposure to benzene. Improving working conditions in furniture work places is a priority.
