Mean Radiant Temperature Measurements through Small Black Globes under Forced Convection Conditions

One of the most critical variables in the field of thermal comfort measurements is the mean radiant temperature which is typically measured with a standard 150 mm black globe thermometer. This is also the reference instrument required for the assessment of heat stress conditions by means of the well-known Wet Bulb Globe Temperature index (WBGT). However, one of the limitations of this method is represented by the relatively long response time. This is why in recent years there has been a more and more pressing need of smart sensors for controlling Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, and for pocket heat stress meters (e.g., WBGT meters provided with table tennis balls). Although it is widely agreed that there is a clear advantage of small probes in terms of response times, their accuracy is a still a debated matter and no systematic studies aimed at metrologically characterizing their performances are actually available, due to the difficulty of reproducing measuring conditions such as a black enclosure at uniform temperature. In this paper the results of a metrological analysis of two small globes (38 and 50 mm diameter) carried out by means of an experimental apparatus specifically designed to reproduce a black uniform enclosure are presented and discussed. Experimental results revealed a systematic underestimation of the mean radiant temperature predicted by small globes of more than 10 °C in forced convection and at high radiative loads.

The Effects of the Dynamic Thermophysical Properties of Clothing and the Walking Speed Input Parameter on the Heat Strain of a Human Body Predicted by the PHS Model

The prediction accuracy of the Predicted Heat Strain (PHS) model is affected by the correction approaches of static thermophysical properties of clothing considering the pumping effects of wind and body movement. In this study, a comparison of different correction algorithms for three types of clothing and their influence on the heat strain predicted by the PHS model was carried out with experimental data obtained from the literature. Results show that the dynamic insulation values calculated by ISO 9920 corrections are larger than those obtained by ISO 7933 when the static insulation values are higher than 0.4 clo, but when the static values are lower than 0.4 clo, it varies contrarily. The dynamic evaporative resistance values calculated with ISO 9920 equations are larger than those with ISO 7933. The prediction accuracy of the PHS model with ISO 9920 corrections and the addition of the walking speed input parameter can be improved for normal clothing (NC) in a hot environment and high clothing insulation. For specialized, insulating, cold weather clothing (SC), ISO 7933 corrections with an added walking speed input parameter to the PHS model have a good prediction precision.

Globe Temperature and Its Measurement: Requirements and Limitations

This study addresses the measurement of the globe temperature. For this purpose, two globe thermometers with different diameters (50 and 150 mm) and a variety of thermal environmental conditions were considered. The assessments of the response times and of the influences of the globe diameter and the air velocity on the measured globe temperatures are discussed. The results of the response times clearly put in evidence that the values usually stated in the literature can be questioned and that longer measurement periods must be considered. In fact, response times >30 min were obtained in 68% of the tests performed. Moreover, differences >20ºC were obtained between the 150 and 50 mm sensors, highlighting the influence of the globe diameter. The analysis of the effect of the air velocity on the globe temperature shows mean relative differences >30% between tests in still air and with the higher air velocity considered (1.81 m s-1). On the basis of measurements carried out with the 50 mm globe, correction equations to the standard globe temperature for both natural and forced convection are proposed.

The association between wet-bulb globe temperature and other thermal indices (DI, MDI, PMV, PPD, PHS, PSI and PSIhr): a field study

The current study aimed at comparing the correlation coefficients between wet-bulb globe temperature (WBGT) and a number of parameters, including the discomfort index (DI), modified discomfort index (MDI), predicted mean vote (PMV), predicted percentage of dissatisfaction (PPD), predicted heat strain (PHS), physiological strain index (PSI) and physiological strain index heart rate (PSI_hr). In total, 30 workers of a pelletizing factory participated in this study. Environmental parameters and workers' physiological parameters were measured in 10 working stations. The results showed that effective WBGT (WBGT_eff) strongly correlates with DI, MDI, PMV, PPD, PHS, PSI and PSI_hr. WBGT_eff had the highest correlation coefficients with PMV, MDI, PHS and PSI_hr. Based on the obtained results, it was concluded that heat stress exceeded the standard limit for a number of indices in some of the working stations. Thus, some controlling measures should be taken to reduce heat stress in these stations.

Human responses in heat - comparison of the Predicted Heat Strain and the Fiala multi-node model for a case of intermittent work

Two mathematical models of human thermal regulation include the rational Predicted Heat Strain (PHS) and the thermophysiological model by Fiala. The approaches of the models are different, however, they both aim at providing predictions of the thermophysiological responses to thermal environments of an average person. The aim of this study was to compare and analyze predictions of the two models against experimental data. The analysis also includes a gender comparison. The experimental data comprised of ten participants (5 males, 5 females, average anthropometric values were used as input) conducting an intermittent protocol of rotating tasks (cycling, stacking, stepping and arm crank) of moderate metabolic activities (134-291W/m²) with breaks in-between in a controlled environmental condition (34°C, 60% RH). The validation consisted of the predictions' comparison against experimental data from 2.5h of data of rectal temperature and mean skin temperature based on contact thermometry from four body locations. The PHS model over-predicted rectal temperatures during the first activity for males and the cooling effectiveness of sweat in the recovery periods, for both males and females. As a result, the PHS simulation underestimated the thermal strain in this context. The Fiala model accurately predicted the rectal temperature throughout the exposure. The fluctuation of the experimental mean skin temperature was not reflected in any of the models. However, the PHS simulation model showed better agreement than the Fiala model. As both models predicted responses more accurately for males than females, we suggest that in future development of the models it is important to take this result into account. The paper further discusses possible sources of the observed discrepancies and concludes with some suggestions for modifications.

Evaluation of the metabolic rate based on the recording of the heart rate

The assessment of harsh working conditions requires a correct evaluation of the metabolic rate. This paper revises the basis described in the ISO 8996 standard for the evaluation of the metabolic rate at a work station from the recording of the heart rate of a worker during a representative period of time. From a review of the literature, formulas different from those given in the standard are proposed to estimate the maximum working capacity, the maximum heart rate, the heart rate and the metabolic rate at rest and the relation (HR vs. M) at the basis of the estimation of the equivalent metabolic rate, as a function of the age, height and weight of the person. A Monte Carlo simulation is used to determine, from the approximations of these parameters and formulas, the imprecision of the estimated equivalent metabolic rate. The results show that the standard deviation of this estimate varies from 10 to 15%.

Uncertainty Analysis in Humidity Measurements by the Psychrometer Method

The most common and cheap indirect technique to measure relative humidity is by using psychrometer based on a dry and a wet temperature sensor. In this study, the measurement uncertainty of relative humidity was evaluated by this indirect method with some empirical equations for calculating relative humidity. Among the six equations tested, the Penman equation had the best predictive ability for the dry bulb temperature range of 15-50 °C. At a fixed dry bulb temperature, an increase in the wet bulb depression increased the error. A new equation for the psychrometer constant was established by regression analysis. This equation can be computed by using a calculator. The average predictive error of relative humidity was <0.1% by this new equation. The measurement uncertainty of the relative humidity affected by the accuracy of dry and wet bulb temperature and the numeric values of measurement uncertainty were evaluated for various conditions. The uncertainty of wet bulb temperature was the main factor on the RH measurement uncertainty.

Notes on the implementation of the IREQ model for the assessment of extreme cold environments

This paper has been devoted to the difficulties that practitioners, skilled ergonomists or occupational health experts could find in the assessment of cold environments by means of (insulation required) IREQ model at the base of the (International Standardization Organization) ISO 11079 Standard. The in-depth analysis discussed here has underlined several difficulties about: (a) the graphical calculation of the predicted limit exposures; (b) some differences in both IREQ and (duration limit exposure) DLE values reported in ISO 11079; and (c) some errors and incongruities in the program available online for the assessment of DLEs. These occurrences lead to the systematic overestimation of the DLE that exceed up to 4 h, those obtained by means of the figures reported in the Standard with the consequent unreliable assessment. Such matters justify the need to promote, in the whole scientific community involved in the ergonomics of the thermal environment, an in-depth discussion on the best practice to be followed for the assessment of extreme cold environments by means of IREQ model.

PRACTITIONER SUMMARY

Incongruities in IREQ model and errors in the code suggested by ISO 11079 Standard prevent a reliable assessment of cold environments with DLE systematically overestimated. Therefore IREQ model has been theoretically investigated trying to help both neophytes and skilled ergonomists on the best practice to be followed.

On the transition thermal discomfort to heat stress as a function of the PMV value

ISO 15265 Standard - Ergonomics of the thermal environment - Risk assessment strategy for the prevention of stress or discomfort in thermal working conditions - can be considered as a key document for helping responsible for the health protection and prevention of working situations. According to the SOBANE strategy, this standard provides a three-step protocol aimed to the prevention, elimination or reduction of risks affecting the workplaces. Although both methods and procedures suggested by ISO 15265 appear very clear, this standard could bring in confusion both beginners and not specialists in occupational health concerning Predicted Mean Vote (PMV) threshold values consistent with comfort - hot discomfort and the discomfort - hot stress transitions. In this work such matter has been extensively discussed showing a certain difficulty in the definition of an unambiguous PMV threshold value for each working situation in any microclimate.
