Infratentorial abscess secondary to dermal sinus associated with dermoid cyst in children: Review of the literature and report of a rare case

A Rare Presentation of Occipital Dermoid Cyst with Intracranial Extension and Secondary Infection: Case Report and Follow-Up

Craniofacial dermoid cysts are congenital anomalies that rarely have intracranial extension and can be associated with other anomalies. Common sites of these lesions are the lateral brow and parietal scalp. Presentation of the dermoid cyst in the occipital region with intracranial extension is extremely rare. We report a 2-year-old female with a presentation of an occipital dermoid cyst with intracranial extension and secondary cerebellar abscess. This case highlights the rarity of the presentation of an occipital dermoid cyst with intracranial extension and secondary infection and the importance of early imaging for suspected dermoid cysts in the occipital region for identification of intracranial extension.

Dermoid Cyst in the Posterior Fossa Associated With Dermal Sinus and Abscess Formation: A Case Report

Posterior fossa dermoid cysts are rare intracranial tumors. Most are congenital and develop during early pregnancy but manifest later in life. We report a case of a congenital posterior fossa dermoid cyst in a 22-year-old patient presenting with fever and multiple neurological complaints. Imaging studies revealed a bony defect in the occipital bone suggestive of sinus formation, heterogeneous hypointensity on T1-weighted image (T1WI), and post-contrast peripheral enhancement suggestive of an infectious process and abscess formation. The histopathological examination was typical for a dermoid cyst containing adnexal structures. This report reviews the case with its unique location and unusual radiological features. Further, the clinical presentation, diagnosis modalities, and treatment outcomes are discussed.

Suboccipital extracranial and intracranial abscess of a neonate: an exceedingly rare occurrence

Intracranial abscess is a life-threatening disease that is uncommon in paediatric populations. Although there have been few reports in the literature, some aetiologies, such as mastoiditis and sinusitis, have been proposed. The pathophysiology is not completely known, and there are no data regarding the long-term follow-up of these patients. Herein, we present a case of a newborn affected with a mass in the suboccipital region due to an extracranial and intracranial abscess that had no clear association with infections except for a transient fever episode 1 month earlier. Isolation of Staphylococcus aureus from an open-surgery sample identified the cause of the mass. The patient achieved excellent recovery with no recurrence even after 8 years of follow-up. To our knowledge, this rare pattern of infection highlights the importance of early diagnosis in combination with a surgical approach as an effective diagnosis and treatment approach that provided a good outcome.
