Abstract
Neuroanatomy is a notoriously challenging subject for medical students to learn. Due to the coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) pandemic, anatomical education transitioned to an online format. We assessed student performance in, and attitudes toward, an online neuroanatomy assessment compared to an in-person equivalent, as a marker of the efficacy of remote neuroanatomy education. Participants in the National Undergraduate Neuroanatomy Competition (NUNC) 2021 undertook two online examinations: a neuroanatomically themed multiple-choice question paper and anatomy spotter. Students completed pre- and post-examination questionnaires to gauge their attitudes toward the online competition and prior experience of online anatomical teaching/assessment. To evaluate performance, we compared scores of students who sat the online (2021) and in-person (2017) examinations, using 12 identical neuroradiology questions present in both years. Forty-six percent of NUNC 2021 participants had taken an online anatomy examination in the previous 12 months, but this did not impact examination performance significantly (p > 0.05). There was no significant difference in examination scores between in-person and online examinations using the 12 neuroradiology questions (p = 0.69). Fifty percent of participants found the online format less enjoyable, with 63% citing significantly fewer networking opportunities. The online competition was less stressful for 55% of participants. This study provides some evidence to suggest that student performance is not affected when undertaking online examinations and proposes that online neuroanatomy teaching methods, particularly for neuroradiology, may be equally as effective as in-person approaches within this context. Participants perceived online examinations as less stressful but raised concerns surrounding the networking potential and enjoyment of online events.

Abstract
The careers of the Mayo brothers, Harvey Cushing, and Sir William Osler greatly shaped medical and surgical practice in the late 19th century and early 20th century and created a legacy to influence decades of physicians to follow. Additionally, these individuals were instrumental in the founding of neurosurgery as a distinct surgical specialty. Alongside these great men, Dr. Albert L. Rhoton Jr., revolutionized neurosurgical practice through his study of neuroanatomy and development of microsurgical technique in the second half of the 20th century. This review of the interactions and relationships between the Mayo brothers, Cushing, and Osler and their influences on Rhoton highlights the 100-year-long interconnectedness shared between these giants in the history of neurosurgery.

Abstract
Background Laboratory dissections are essential to acquire practical skills to perform neurosurgical procedures. Despite being traditionally done on cadavers, they are often unavailable and suffer from cultural barriers in the African context. Non-cadaveric UpSurgeOn neurosurgery models have been developed to bridge this barrier, providing an almost similar experience with the human body. This study aimed to assess the impact of the UpSurgeOn hands-on-touch non-cadaver model training amongst selected Cameroon medical students. Methods An anonymous 35-item questionnaire was distributed online using Google drive systems to medical students who attended UpSurgeOn's hands-on-touch non-cadaver model training course. These questions aimed to capture data on previous experience with neuroanatomy and neurosurgery practicals and the perception, attitudes, and impact of the UpSurgeOn neurosurgery tool. Results Eighty-six students completed the survey. The mean age was 21.2 ± 1.868 years, 61.6% were males with 62.8% of respondents being medical students in preclinical years. Before the training, 29.4% had a fair knowledge of neuroanatomy. Textbooks and Youtube videos were the main sources of neuroanatomy and neurosurgery knowledge for more than half of the respondents. Up to 91.5% had no prior exposure to a neuroanatomy/neurosurgery cadaver laboratory dissection, and 22.6% and 17.6% had witnessed and performed at least one craniotomy before, respectively. There were 11.1%, 15.5%, and 31.3% of our respondents who had used a surgical microscope, a neurosurgical instrument, and the UpSurgeOn Neurosurgery tool before, respectively. The majority perceived the UpSurgeOn tool easy to use and felt they needed to learn just a few things before getting going with the box. Most thought of increasing the use of the UpSurgeOn Box and saw the need to be part of the training curriculum. Finally, the majority felt this tool helped to increase familiarity and acquire neurosurgical skills, and to develop the orientation skills needed during neurosurgical approaches. Conclusion Undergraduate exposure to traditional neurosurgery/neuroanatomy labs is limited in Cameroon. Neurosurgery/neuroanatomy practical skills are gained essentially using non-practical means. Most students found the UpSurgeOn tool user-friendly, saw the need to incorporate it as part of their training, and perceived it to be essential in getting acquainted with neurosurgical skills.

Abstract
Introduction Social media have become ubiquitous and their role in medicine is quickly growing. They provide an open platform by which members share educational material, clinical experiences, and collaborate with educational equity. Research question To characterize the role of social media in neurosurgery, we analyzed metrics of the largest neurosurgical group (Neurosurgery Cocktail), collected relevant data about activities, impact and risks of this groundbreaking technology. Material and methods We extracted Facebook metrics from 60-day time sample, including users demographics and other platform-specific values such as active members and number of posts within 60 days. A quality assessment of the posted material (clinical case reports and second opinions) was obtained establishing four main quality-criteria: privacy violation; quality of imaging; clinical and follow up data. Results By December 2022, the group included 29.524 members (79.8% male), most (29%) between 35 and 44 years of age. Over 100 countries were represented. A total of 787 posts were published in 60 days with an average of 12.7 per day. In 173 clinical cases presented through the platform, some issue with privacy was recorded in 50.9%. The imaging was considered insufficient in 39.3%, clinical data in 53.8%; follow up data were missing in 60.7%. Discussion and conclusion The study provided a quantitative evaluation of impact, flaws and limitations of social medial for healthcare. Flaws were mostly data breach and insufficient quality of case reports. There are actions to correct these flaws that can be easily taken to provide a greater credibility and efficacy to the system.

Abstract
Background The interest in clinical research is growing worldwide, and the involvement of medical students in academic and clinical research is increasing. Medical students in Iraq have started to focus on academic activities. However, this trend is in its infancy due to limited resources and the war burden. Their interest in the field of Neurosurgery has been evolving recently. This is the first paper that aims to assess the status of the academic productivity of Iraqi medical students within the neurosurgical field. Methods We searched the PubMed Medline database and Google scholar between January 2020 and December 2022 with a different combination of keywords. Additional results were obtained by individually searching for all the medical universities in Iraq that participated in the neurosurgical literature. Results Between January 2020 and December 2022, 60 neurosurgical publications included Iraqi medical students. 47 Iraqi medical students from 9 universities (the University of Baghdad 28 students, followed by 6 students from the University of Al-Nahrain, and others) were involved in these 60 neurosurgery publications. The topics of these publications are "vascular neurosurgery" (n = 36) followed by "neurotrauma" (n = 11). Conclusion Academic productivity of Iraqi medical students in the field of Neurosurgery has surged in the last 3 years. In the past 3 years, 47 Iraqi medical students from nine different Iraqi universities contributed to sixty international neurosurgical publications. However, there are challenges that are required to be tackled to establish a research-friendly environment despite wars and restrained resources.

Abstract
Background Aneurysm surgery is considered difficult by young and trainee neurosurgeons. This is due to difficulty in understanding orientation of aneurysm complex (proximal and distal vessels, aneurysm neck, and fundus) in relation to the surrounding structures (skull, brain, vessels, and nerves) after head is rotated, extended, and fixed on the head frame. Virtual three-dimensional (3D) imaging studies and 3D-printed models help young neurosurgeons but are not accessible to most of the centers due to need for resources (human and equipment). Authors used handmade 3D models of aneurysm complex to train young neurosurgeons before and during surgery to make them understand steps to treat it. Methods RadiAnt DICOM viewer software (2022.1.1, 64-bit, Medixant, Poznan, Poland) was used for acquiring 3D Volume Rendering Technique images to make aneurysm models preoperatively. Twisted 20 Gauze galvanized iron wires were used for making proximal and distal branches and Epoxy Putty (M-seal, Pidilite ® industries, Mumbai, India) was used to make smooth surfaces of the vessels, aneurysm necks, and fundi. Models were used in operating room (OR) before and during surgery to help surgeons and trainees get oriented to the aneurysm complexes. Results Handmade models, oriented as per patients' head position, were useful to make surgeons and trainees to understand projection of various components of the aneurysm complex in relation to adjacent structures, especially skull base, during both preoperative planning and in OR even before completion of the dissection. Conclusion Handmade models of aneurysms are inexpensive tool and can help trainee neurosurgeons to plan and execute surgical management of aneurysms.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE How attitudes toward neuroanatomy and preferences of studying resources vary among neurosurgeons is unknown. The impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on anatomy learning habits is also yet to be elucidated. In this study, we explore these objectives, to guide the development of future neurosurgeon-tailored anatomy education and resources. METHODS This was a 2-stage, cross-sectional study design comprising a local pilot survey followed by a structured 17-item questionnaire, distributed to both neurosurgical trainees and consultants. Grade and nationality differences in sentiment agreement were statistically compared. RESULTS A total of 365 responses were received from 32 countries (overall response rate, 23.2%). Neuroanatomy is highly regarded among most neurosurgeons and takes a central role in their professional identity. Yet, 69% of neurosurgeons wanted to spend more time learning. Common study prompts included perceived operative complexity, lack of familiarity and teaching. Financial barriers and motivation were obstacles limiting neuroanatomy learning, more so among trainee neurosurgeons, with personal commitment barriers significantly varying with geographic location. Surgical relevance, accessibility, and image quality were important factors when selecting anatomy resources, with cost and up-to-datedness being important for juniors. The COVID-19 pandemic saw a shift toward virtual resources, particularly affecting United Kingdom-based trainees. CONCLUSIONS Although neuroanatomy is well regarded, barriers exist that impede further neuroanatomy learning. Neurosurgical training programs should tailor anatomy education according to the seniority and background of their residents. Furthermore, resources that are surgically relevant and accessible and are of high image quality are more likely to be better used.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Operative neurosurgical skills education is a vital part of neurosurgical training, and these skills are usually obtained through operating room experience and supplemented by textbooks and other resources. We aimed to determine the resources used by trainees in the Philippines, both prior to and after the onset of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. METHODS An online survey was sent to neurosurgical trainees in the Philippines from January to March 2021. Data on demographics, educational resources used, and weekly hours spent on each were collected, for both the pre- and post-coronavirus disease 2019 periods. RESULTS A total of 37 neurosurgical trainees (60% response rate) participated in the survey. Most respondents were female (70%), in their senior levels (58%), and undergoing training in a public institution (65%). The main resources for operative neurosurgical education were operative experience, online academic resources, and neurosurgical textbooks. After the onset of the pandemic, the overall time spent decreased to 61.2 hours/week from 67.7 hours/week, with a significant reduction in the hours spent on operative experience (27.3 vs. 21.3 hours/week, P < 0.0001) and a significant increase in the time spent on webinars (0 vs. 3.2 hours/week, P < 0.0001) and online resources as a whole (14.9 vs. 16.4 hours/week, P = 0.0003). CONCLUSIONS Operative experience, online academic resources, and neurosurgical textbooks were the main resources for operative neurosurgical education among trainees in the Philippines. After the onset of the pandemic, the hours spent on operative experience decreased and online academic resources increased significantly. New avenues of neurosurgical education, particularly webinars, also became available locally.

Abstract
The removal of petroclival meningiomas (PMs) is considered a neurosurgical challenge due to the critical mobilization of key neurovascular structures. Limited knowledge about the benefits of operating on patients with PMs using the combined presigmoid-subtemporal approach (CPSA) in a semi-sitting position has precluded its generalizability. We report on ten patients with PMs operated in a semi-sitting position using CPSA. We remark that before the surgical approach was accomplished in our group of patients, the CPSA via semi-sitting position was conducted and standardized in six adult cadaveric heads. The neuroanatomic dissections made in cadavers allowed us to confidently use CPSA in our set of patients. There were no comorbidities, perioperative complications, or deaths associated with the surgical procedure. CPSA via a semi-sitting position can be considered a safe approach to remove PMs.

Abstract
Background: Research is a central component of neurosurgical training and practice and is increasingly viewed as a quintessential indicator of academic productivity. In this study, we focus on identifying the current status and challenges of neurosurgical research in Iraq. Methods: An online PubMed Medline database search was conducted to identify all articles published by Iraq-based neurosurgeons between 2003 and 2020. Information was extracted in relation to the following parameters: authors, year of publication, author’s affiliation, author’s specialty, article type, article citation, journal name, journal impact factor, and topic. This data were then tabulated and analyzed. Results: Between 2003 and 2021, a total of 52 PubMed indexed papers were published from Iraq. All publications have been clustered in the period of 2012–2020. From 2012 to 2016, only four papers were published, one per year. The number of publications increased from 2017 to 2021, with an average of 12 publications per year. The most common article type was “case reports” (n = 14). Neurotrauma (n = 10) and vascular neurosurgery (n = 10) were the two most common topics. Most of the studies came from the city of Bagdad (n = 46), with just nine studies coming from peripheral governorates. The Neurosurgery Teaching Hospital in Bagdad was the neurosurgery center with the highest research output (n = 38). Conclusion: The number of publications per year has been showing a, relatively, promising trend since 2012. However, to promote sustained growth in academic productivity, a strategic plan that acknowledges the political, financial, and health-system-related challenges are urgently needed.
