Factors affecting piglet mortality during the first 24 h after the onset of parturition in large litters: effects of farrowing housing on behaviour of postpartum sows

The present study aimed to identify the factors that affect immediate (within 24 h after farrowing onset) postnatal piglet mortality in litters with hyperprolific sows, and investigate their associations with behaviour of postpartum sows in two different farrowing housing systems. A total of 30 sows were housed in: (1) CRATE (n=15): the farrowing crate closed (0.80×2.20 m) within a pen (2.50×1.70 m), and (2) OPEN (n=15): the farrowing crate open (0.80×2.20×1.80 m) within a pen (2.50×2.40 m) with a provision of 20 ls of hay in a rack. A total of 518 live born piglets, produced from the 30 sows, were used for data analyses during the first 24 h after the onset of parturition (T24). Behavioural observations of the sows were assessed via video analyses during T24. Total and crushed piglet mortality rates were higher in OPEN compared with CRATE (P<0.01, for both). During T24, the OPEN sows tended to show higher frequency of postural changes (P=0.07) and duration of standing (P=0.10), and showed higher frequencies of bar-biting (P<0.05) and piglet trapping (P<0.01), when compared with the CRATE sows. During T24, the mortality rates caused by crushing were correlated with the piglet trapping event (r=0.93, P<0.0001), postural changes (r=0.37, P<0.01), duration of standing (r=0.32, P<0.01) and frequency of bar-biting behaviour (r=0.51, P<0.01) of the sows (n=30). In conclusion, immediate postnatal piglet mortality, mainly due to crushing, may be associated with potential increases in frequency of postural changes, duration of standing and incidence of piglet trapping in postpartum sows in the open crate system with large litters.

Estimation of colostrum intake in the neonatal pig

Three trials were performed in order to establish a method of estimation of colostrum intake based on weight gain in newborn pigs. The first trial involved 33 piglets, bottle-fed with sow colostrum and weighed regularly for 25 h. A regression equation relating colostrum intake (CI in g) to birth weight (BWB in kg), weight at CI estimation (BW in kg), age at first suck (tFS in min) and duration of colostrum intake (t in min and with 17 h < t < 25 h) was established with a root mean-square error equal to 33 g. This equation was evaluated with a second data set using 15 further bottle-fed piglets (trial 2). Measured and predicted values were very close (R2 = 0.90). The third trial compared colostrum intake estimated either with the previous equation or with the deuterium oxide dilution method in catheterized sow-reared or bottle-fed piglets (no. = 12 per group). The equation underestimated colostrum intake of those piglets, probably due to prior surgery. However, the feeding method (bottle-feeding v. sow-rearing) had no effect on the relationship between weight gain and colostrum intake. Therefore, the equation established in bottle-fed piglets may be applied to sow-reared piglets.

Relationship of sow udder morphology with piglet suckling behavior and teat access

The aim of this study was to investigate if there is a relationship between the latency to the first suckling and udder and teat morphology and to assess the extent to which piglet and sow characteristics influence teat pair position preference. Udder morphology trait measurements, piglet suckling behavior, and sow productive and behavioral traits were recorded from a population of 74 Large White X Landrace sows of different parities. The interteat distance within the same row was larger between the teats that were suckled at the first contact with the udder compared with the unsuckled teats (P = 0.04). There was a tendency for piglets to suckle first from teats placed closer to the abdominal midline. A high proportion of siblings (64%) suckled for the first time on a teat previously chosen by another piglet. Most neonates suckled first from a teat located in the posterior part of the udder (41%) or in the anterior part (33%), rather than the middle section. Latency from birth to suckling and the time from the first udder contact to locate a teat and suckle was shorter for piglets first suckling the anterior (28:03 and 9:48 minutes) and posterior teats (26:31; 8:38 minutes) than for those sucking the midsection teats (34:30 minutes, F7,256 = 1.99, P = 0.05; 10:30, F7,256 = 2.37, P = 0.05). To avoid possible confounds, other potential causes of delay in successful suckling were studied. The latency to suckle was not influenced by piglet vitality score at birth, weight, or provision of human assistance to place it at the udder. It was shorter when the piglets were born later in the litter (P < 0.001), from a litter with a low incidence of piglets born dead (P = 0.001) and from a sow with an induced farrowing (P = 0.007). Moreover, there was a tendency for piglets born from a multiparous sow (P = 0.06) and in a large litter size (P = 0.07) to have a longer latency to find a teat and suckle once they had made the first contact with the udder. Although suckling itself is clearly an instinctive behavior, acquisition of colostrum depends on many variables, relating not only to piglet characteristics but to sow behavioral and morphological characteristics as well. Future studies on sow characteristics are therefore recommended.

Sensory systems and nipple attachment behavior in neonatal pigs

The influence of piglet sensory systems and the role of odors from the sow's ventrum on piglet nipple attachment were investigated. In Experiment 1, four sows had their ventrum washed with organic solvents and four were unwashed control sows. Piglets were given one of four treatments shortly after birth: nares that were mechanically blocked (B), a lidocaine flush of the olfactory system (LFO), a saline flush of the olfactory system (SFO) or nontreated controls (C). Time to attach to a nipple, up to a maximum of 600 sec, was recorded. On unwashed sows, nipple attachment was affected (p less than 0.01) by piglet treatment. Piglets have B or LFO treatments took longer to attach to a nipple than SFO or C piglets. Piglets of all treatments took longer to attach to washed sows than to unwashed controls. Seven unwashed sows and their litters were used in Experiment 2. Piglets were tested after birth with one of the following treatments: an olfactory system flushed with lidocaine, lidocaine on nose (LN), lidocaine applied to the tongue (LT) or nontreated controls. All lidocaine-treated piglets took more time to attach than C piglets. Nipple attachment latencies were intermediate for LN or LT piglets. In Experiment 3, three unwashed sows and their litters were used. Treatments were: lidocaine applied to both the nose and the tongue (LNT), an olfactory system flushed with lidocaine or nontreated controls. LFO piglets had an increased latency to attachment compared to controls while LNT piglets were intermediate in latency to attach. Piglet olfaction, gustation and tactile sensory modalities as well as odors on the sow's ventrum influenced nipple attachment.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
