Challenges of health and well-being in the world according to SDG indicators

This study reviews the current state of the good health and well-being indicators included in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), identifying the most significant challenges faced by countries in the world and in the Americas region. The HJ-Biplot multivariate technique is used to represent variances and covariances between 16 SDG 3 indicators, reported as of 2022, based on data from 176 countries, including 31 countries of the American continent. The findings show that indicators such as life expectancy at birth, universal health coverage and satisfied demand for family planning are key characteristics of developed countries. In contrast, developing countries still face significant challenges in terms of promoting maternal health, the well-being of children and the control of communicable and chronic diseases. For this reason, in the framework of the 2030 Agenda, it is necessary to continue working on public policy actions that enable making progress in the implementation of programs to improve the health and well-being of the population, especially in lower-income countries.

Coping strategies for COVID-19 primary care: a mixed method study

This article aims to analyse the COVID-19 coping strategies adopted by municipal health managers in two regions. A mixed method study of the sequential explanatory type was carried out with municipal health managers and primary care coordinators. The quantitative stage was developed with the application of an instrument to 42 managers to identify coping actions and associations with demographic and epidemiological data of COVID-19 in the municipalities. The results aimed at the definition of 15 participants and the collection of data in the qualitative stage, enabling approximation of the meta inferences of the study. Of the actions implemented, there were immediate actions to monitor cases, organize new care flows and encourage the population to adopt nonpharmacological measures. Regional articulation was the device that allowed for expansion and municipal autonomy for testing, reducing contamination and deaths among citizens. Municipal coping strategies that focused on the surveillance of cases and expansion of testing showed positive outcomes in terms of the number of infections and deaths from COVID-19.

Impact of conflict and pandemic on women's health in Latin America: implementation to improve equity in the provision and access to safe obstetric anesthesia

Latin America is one of the regions with the most significant inequalities in women's health as a result of factors such as social disparity, lack of work opportunities, unemployment, violence, and corruption. Adding a health crisis like the COVID-19 pandemic to these elements created a perfect storm that perpetuated extreme inequalities. The crisis negatively impacted Latin-American women, and economic recession in our region was one of the main consequences, resulting in women compared with men having higher rates of poverty, poorer access to and experience of healthcare, a wider gender gap, and adverse effects on well-being. This consequently made women more vulnerable. Several initiatives to allow better access and to provide safe anesthesia to pregnant patients have been taken in the region to improve obstetric patient care during the pandemic and beyond. Education has been pivotal and one of the most essential tools in bridging the gap in inequalities between men and women.
