Sustainable removal of Ni(II) from waste water by freshly isolated fungal strains

The release of untreated wastewater containing biotoxic substances in the form of heavy metals is one of the most crucial environmental and health challenges faced by our community. The recent advances in microbes derived removal has propelled bioremediation as a better and effective alternative to conventional techniques. Present study investigates the detoxification mechanisms evolved by the nickel (Ni(II)) resistant fungal strains, isolated from the industrial drain sites. The molecular detailing of the isolated fungal isolates confirms their identity as Neurospora crassa and Aspergillus flavus. Laboratory-scale experiments have established influence of different ranges of dose, pH, time, and metal concentration on the removal and uptake trends. Further, the variations in the carbon and nitrogen sources and agitation conditions has revealed the best substratum for achieving optimum results for the industrial exploitation of these microbes. SEM micrographs and FTIR spectra elucidates the superficial alterations on the mycelium of the fungal isolates and the involvement of active functional groups in the bioremediation of Ni(II) respectively. Biosorption of Ni(II) on living biomass has followed the Langmuir adsorption model. The findings of the study have provided a promising insight in the simultaneous action of different mechanistic removal approaches to explore a large scale removal of Ni(II) from the waste generating industries.

Fungal bioleaching of metals from refinery spent catalysts: A critical review of current research, challenges, and future directions

Petroleum refining operations such as hydroprocessing and fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) generate huge quantities of spent catalysts containing toxic and valuable metals (Ni, V, Mo, Co, W, Al, etc.), the management of which is a serious environmental issue. Besides environmental concerns, the different metals present in the spent catalysts are also a valuable commodity to modern industries. Therefore, these spent catalysts also provide an opportunity to use it as a source of value to the refiners. In recent years, a biotechnological based leaching process 'bioleaching' has emerged as a promising eco-friendly technique for the extraction of metals from these refinery spent catalysts. Among various bioleaching agents such as archean, bacterial, or fungi, the process mediated by the fungi (Aspergillus niger, Penicillium simplicissimum, and many others) is gaining attention owing to the high metal extraction ability of the various fungal produced metabolites (organic acids) under moderately acidic conditions. Furthermore, the ability of these fungi to withstand wide process conditions (pH, spent catalyst concentration, substrate types, etc.), high metal toxicity and use of low-cost organic substrate make them an ideal candidate for bioleaching. In this review article, we shed light on the role and mechanisms of fungi involved in extracting different metals from spent hydroprocessing and FCC catalysts. Key process parameters that affect the efficiency of fungal based bioleaching are discussed. The techno-economic challenges associated with the process are elaborated, and the needed future research directions to promote its commercial applications are highlighted. Based on our analysis, it can be argued that the fungi bioleaching has potential, however, some challenges (slower kinetics, and health and safety) should be addressed before the process can be scaled up for the commercial application.

Bioremoval of Different Heavy Metals by the Resistant Fungal Strain Aspergillus niger

The objective of this work was to study the resistance and removal capacity of heavy metals by the fungus Aspergillus niger. We analyzed the resistance to some heavy metals by dry weight and plate: the fungus grew in 2000 ppm of zinc, lead, and mercury, 1200 and 1000 ppm of arsenic (III) and (VI), 800 ppm of fluor and cobalt, and least in cadmium (400 ppm). With respect to their potential of removal of heavy metals, this removal was achieved for zinc (100%), mercury (83.2%), fluor (83%), cobalt (71.4%), fairly silver (48%), and copper (37%). The ideal conditions for the removal of 100 mg/L of the heavy metals were 28°C, pH between 4.0 and 5.5, 100 ppm of heavy metal, and 1 g of fungal biomass.
