Abstract
PURPOSE A prospective cohort study to investigate the association between fruit and vegetable (F&V) intake and the risk of cataract. METHODS We included 72,160 participants who were free of cataract at baseline from the UK Biobank. Frequency and type of F&V intake were assessed using a web-based 24 h dietary questionnaire from 2009 to 2012. Development of cataract during the follow-up was defined by self-report or hospital inpatient records up to 2021. Cox proportional regression models were used to estimate the association between F&V intake and incident cataract. RESULTS During a mean follow-up of 9.1 years, 5753 participants developed cataract with a corresponding incidence of 8.0%. After adjusting for multiple demographic, medical and lifestyle covariates, higher intake of F&V were associated with a lower risk of cataract (≥6.5 vs. <2 servings/week: hazards ratio [HR]: 0.82, 95% CI: 0.76 to 0.89; P < 0.0001). Regarding specific types, significant reduced risk of cataract was found for higher intake of legumes (P = 0.0016), tomatoes (≥5.2 vs. <1.8 servings/week: HR: 0.94, 95% CI: 0.88 to 1.00), and apple and pear (>7 vs. <3.5 servings/week: 0.89, 95% CI: 0.83 to 0.94; P < 0.0001), but not for cruciferous vegetables, green leafy vegetables, berry, citrus fruit or melon. Smokers were found to benefit more from F&V intake than former and never smokers. Men also could benefit more from higher vegetable intake than women. CONCLUSIONS More F&V intake, especially legumes, tomatoes, apple, and pear, was associated with a lower risk of cataract in this UK Biobank cohort.

Abstract
Objective To investigate the effects of recombinant human epidermal growth factor eye drops combined with phacoemulsification on short- and long-term visual acuity recovery and related dry eye complications in patients with senile cataract. Methods Sixty patients with senile cataract cured from January 2019 to January 2021 were enrolled in our hospital. The patients in the control group were arbitrarily assigned into the control and the research group. The former group received phacoemulsification, and the latter group received recombinant human epidermal growth factor (RhEGF) eye drops combined with phacoemulsification. The curative effect, the incidence of xerophthalmia, short-term and long-term vision improvement, changes of corneal endothelial cells, serum factors, and life quality scores were compared. Results The effective rate of the research group was 90.00%, and the effective rate of the control group was 66.67%; the curative effect of the research group was higher than that of the control group (P < 0.05). The incidence of dry eye in the research group was lower than that in the control group (P < 0.05). The short-term and long-term visual acuity improvement effect of the research group was better than that of the control group (P < 0.05). After treatment, the density of corneal endothelial cells in the research group was higher than that in the control group, while the proportion of hexagonal cells and the coefficient of variation of corneal endothelial cells in the research group were lower than those in the control group (P < 0.05). After treatment, IL-6 and TNF-α in the research group were lower than those in the control group (P < 0.05). Compared with the control group, the physical function, psychological function, social function, and healthy self-cognition scores of the research group were all lower (P < 0.05). Conclusion Cataract is the leading cause of blindness in the world. With the continuous improvement of cataract phacoemulsification technology, the incidence of some serious complications has gradually lessened. Xerophthalmia is one of the most obvious and predictable complications after cataract surgery and may affect the recovery of postoperative visual acuity. Recombinant human epidermal growth factor eye drops can effectively enhance the visual acuity of patients, promote the curative effect, and strengthen the life quality.

Abstract
Cataract and blepharoptosis are both commonly encountered ophthalmic problems in older adults. Since they share similar risk factors, it is plausible that there may be an association between the two conditions. We examined data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) 2010–2012 to determine if there is an association between age-related cataract and blepharoptosis. Multivariable adjusted logistic regression analysis was conducted to examine the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for association of each specific type of cataract with presence of blepharoptosis. Of the 10,387 eligible participants, 4782 (46.0%) had cataract and 1419 (15.8%) had blepharoptosis. There were more participants with blepharoptosis in the cataract group, compared with those in the no cataract group. After adjusting for potential confounders, participants with blepharoptosis had a higher risk of total cataract (OR: 1.557, 95% CI 1.201–2.019) and nuclear subtype cataract (OR: 1.305, 95% CI 1.050–1.620). Blepharoptosis was associated with significantly higher odds of cataract in obese participants when compared with non-obese participants (p for interaction = 0.0236). Our study revealed a positive association between age-related cataract and blepharoptosis; it suggests that thorough ophthalmic assessment is needed when assessing patients who are planning cataract or blepharoptosis surgery.

Abstract
We investigated the antioxidant effects of vitamin E on a glucocorticoid (GC) induced model of cataracts in chick embryos. We used 70 fertilized eggs divided into seven groups as follows: phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) group, olive oil treatment (OO) group, hydrocortisone treatment (HC) group, olive oil and hydrocortisone treatment (OO + HC) group, 50 mg/kg vitamin E and hydrocortisone treatment (HC + VE (50)) group, 25 mg/kg vitamin E and hydrocortisone treatment (HC + VE (25)) group and 15 mg/kg vitamin E and hydrocortisone treatment (HC + VE (15)) group. On day 17, chick embryos were removed from the eggs and lens and liver tissues were excised. Cataract formation was evaluated and total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS), malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) were measured in lens and liver tissues; MDA was measured only in liver. The lenses in the HC + VE (50) group exhibited significantly higher levels of GPx and TAS, and lower levels of TOS than for HC and OO + HC groups. The livers of the HC + VE (50) group exhibited significantly higher levels of GPx and lower levels of MDA than for the HC and OO + HC groups. The HC + VE (50) group lenses were evaluated as grade 1, because the nuclei were completely free of cataracts, likely due to the antioxidative effect of high dose VE. VE is an effective antioxidant agent that exhibits a dose-response effect, for ameliorating the negative effects of GCs.
