Abstract
This study aimed to elucidate whether changes in serum opsonic activity measured by lucigenin-dependent chemiluminescence and luminol-dependent chemiluminescence are useful for estimating physical stress during the perioperative period of gastric endoscopic submucosal dissection. Serum opsonic activity in the peripheral blood of 87 patients was examined in the morning of the day of endoscopic submucosal dissection, the next day, and at 4 days after endoscopic submucosal dissection. Peak height and area under the curve for lucigenin-dependent chemiluminescence were 106.1 ± 22.7% and 102.0 ± 24.7% on the day of endoscopic submucosal dissection, which increased significantly to 113.6 ± 29.4% and 111.0 ± 29.1% on the next day (both p<0.01), and 112.4 ± 27.0% and 110.0 ± 28.1% at 4 days after endoscopic submucosal dissection (both p<0.01), respectively. In contrast, significant changes were not observed in peak height and area under the curve for luminol-dependent chemiluminescence during the perioperative period of endoscopic submucosal dissection. This difference suggests that serum opsonic activity during the perioperative period of gastric endoscopic submucosal dissection is associated with the production of substances with lower oxidizing potential. Abstract
OBJECTIVE The relationship between physical and mental fatigue in rugby players after a match was examined, taking into account the position played. METHODS The Profile of Mood State (POMS) test, blood biochemical parameters, and serum opsonic activity were measured for 37 university rugby football players before and after a match. RESULTS There were no differences in parameter changes except for blood urea nitrogen (a marker for protein catabolism) between the forwards and the backs. Regarding correlation between physical and mental fatigue, in forwards, changes in POMS scores showed a positive correlation with changes in the levels of enzymes of skeletal muscle origin, such as glutamate oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and free fatty acid (FFA) level and white blood cell count (for example, in the Total Mood Disturbance (TMD) score, Spearman's correlation coefficient was 0.417 and p<0.05 with GOT, 0.413 and p<0.05 with LDH, 0.462 and p<0.05 with FFA, and 0.442 and p<0.05 with white blood cell count). In backs, changes in the POMS scores showed a positive correlation with changes in the levels of lipid related parameters such as FFA and total cholesterol (for example, as regards the TMD score, Spearman's correlation coefficient was 0.481 and p<0.05 with FFA, and 0.550 and p<0.05 with total cholesterol), and showed a negative correlation with change in blood glucose level (TMD score, -0.517 and p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS The different exercise loading of the position played during a rugby match may cause differences in the relationship between physical and mental fatigue.

Abstract
Hypochlorous acid, which is one of the reactive oxgen species (ROS) produced from human neutrophils, is converted to cytotoxic NH(2)Cl after reaction with ammonia produced by urease in Helicobacter pylori (HP), increasing gastric mucosal injury and with potential development to gastric cancer. We compared the effects of HP on the production of ROS by human neutrophils between two groups-22 patients with gastric cancer and 16 patients without gastric cancer (control group), in whom HP was isolated from stomach biopsy tissues-using a luminol- and lucigenin-dependent chemiluminescence (LmCL and LgCL, respectively). It was very similar in the mean value or variance of mean maximal chemiluminescence intensities (MCI) and peak time in LmCL and LgCL between the two groups. MCI of LmCL was highly correlated with that of LgCL in both groups. These results indicate that there were no differences in the behaviour of HP on human neutrophil chemiluminescence between two groups. The progression from non-malignant mucosa to cancer may be associated with the time-dependent effects of HP via ROS produced by neutrophils on the gastric mucosa.
