Neuromagnetic dialogue between neuronal minicolumns and astroglial network: A new approach for memory and cerebral computation

Rapidly accumulating experimental data over the past two decades discloses extremely complex neuro-glial interactions and provides new insights regarding novel roles of glial cells, particularly astrocytes, in complex functions. Widespread astrocytic processes, interconnected by gap junctions, form an extremely large physiological syncytium. This structure in conjunction with neuronal activity, very likely contributes to cognitive functions. Based on electrophysiological and neuroanatomical data, the present hypothesis proposes a self-organised, iterative and reciprocal magnetic interaction between neurones and astrocytes to explain neurocomputation, including memory processing, in the human neocortex.

Experimental production of illusory (false) memories in reconstructions of narratives: effect size and potential mediation by right hemispheric stimulation from complex, weak magnetic fields

This experiment was designed to discern the proportion of false, inferential and verbatim memories that would be included in the reconstruction, one week later, of a 5 min narrative containing ambiguous but emotional content about a little boy. After 48 subjects were administered Spiegel's Hypnosis Induction Profile, they listened to the narrative, were exposed to one of four applications of transcerebral weak, complex magnetic fields for 30 min and then given either an accurate or inaccurate short summary of the story. One week later the group who received the erroneous summary reported more false memories about the original story than did the reference group; this treatment accommodated about 40% of the variance in numbers of false memories. Only an indicator of electrical lability within the temporal lobes (but not hypnotizability) was strongly associated with the numbers of inferential memories but not the numbers of false memories. The group that received transcerebral stimulation over the right hemisphere by a complex magnetic field and the erroneous summary reported three times the numbers of false memories compared to the other groups. Whereas verbatim memories showed a strong primacy effect inferential memories exhibited a strong recency effect (eta(2) =.66).

Enhanced hypnotizability by cerebrally applied magnetic fields depends upon the order of hemispheric presentation: an anistropic effect

A significant alteration in the hypnotizability of normal subjects after brief (15 min) exposures to weak (1 microT) pulsed magnetic fields over the temporal lobes was determined by the serial order of hemispheric stimulation. Only subjects who received the right hemispheric stimulation first displayed significantly elevated hypnosis induction profile scores (effect size equivalent to a correlation of 0.41). Implications for a technology that can: a) modify hypnotizability, b) encourage the consolidation of quasiexperiences that are reconstructed as autobiographical memory, and c) change the sense of self, are discussed.

Modification of activation and evaluation properties of narratives by weak complex magnetic field patterns that simulate limbic burst firing

In two separate experiments a total of 71 volunteers were asked to generate spontaneous narratives that were scored automatically by the Whissell Dictionary of Affect. During the narratives, weak (1 microT; 10 mG) magnetic fields were applied briefly through the temporal planes. In Experiment I, subjects who were exposed to simple sine wave or pulsed fields generated more scorable words that indicated lower activation and evaluation than sham-field conditions. In Experiment II subjects exposed to a computer-generated wave form, designed to simulate neuronal burst firing, generated narratives dominated by more pleasantness and less activation than a reference group. The possibility that this approach could be utilized to study the affective dimension of language selection was indicated.

Biological effects of weak electromagnetic fields from 0 Hz to 200 MHz: a survey of the literature with special emphasis on possible magnetic resonance effects

The literature on biological effects of weak electromagnetic fields of a frequency of 200 MHz or less is surveyed. The topic has been extraordinarily controversial, in part because of disputed assertions about a role for electromagnetic fields in carcinogenesis or production of abnormalities in growth and development. There is fairly widespread acceptance of certain beneficial effects, particularly the stimulation of healing. An increasing number of reports point to interactions between static magnetic fields and time-varying fields in the production of some effects. Safety implications are noted along with the hypothetical possibility of production of experimental artifacts by electromagnetic fields in MRS research.

Geophysical variables and behavior: LV. Predicting the details of visitor experiences and the personality of experients: the temporal lobe factor

The visitor experience, a more intense form of the normal sense of presence, emphasizes the deep belief of personal contact with an extraterrestrial (or religious) entity. Phenomenological details of visitor experiences are expected to reflect the functions of deep temporal lobe structures; common details involve cosmic meaningfulness, vestibular experiences, flickering, complex visual sensations and alimentary references. After intense experiences, interictal-like behaviors similar to religious conversions (widening affect, sense of personal, desire to spread the word, concern about Man's destiny) emerge. Normal people who are prone to these experiences show frequent temporal lobe signs and specific personality characteristics that include enhanced creativity, suggestibility, mild hypomania, anxiety, and emotional lability. Learning histories that encourage the use of right temporal lobe functions for the consolidation of memory, such as compartmentalization of beliefs or repression due to early sexual abuse, predispose to intense visitor experiences. The most frequent precipitants are psychological depression, personal (existential) stress and proximal exposure to the focal tectonic strain fields that accompany luminous phenomena. Possible neuropsychological mechanisms are discussed.
