Ultrasonic Studies of Cu(II) Soaps Derived from Mustard and Soya Bean Oils

Ultrasonic velocities have been measured in ternary mixtures containing copper soaps derived from mustard and soya bean in 20% and 40% methanol-benzene mixture to access the effect of polarity of solvent on the micellar features of surfactant. The studies suggest that predomination of benzene (higher percentage of non-polar solvent) play a significant role in compacting the molecular organization of the micelles. From these values, the specific acoustic impedance Z, adiabatic compressibility βad, intermolecular free length Lf, apparent molar compressibility ϕk, molar sound velocity R, primary solvation number Sn have been calculated. The data clearly indicate that the values of u, Z, Sn and R increase whereas the values of βad and Lf decrease consistently with increase of the soap concentration. The critical micelle concentration CMC has also been determined and it has been found that CMC is dependent on the composition of the solvent mixture and composition of the edible oil. The Masson equation has also been applied. The results have been explained on the basis of intermolecular interactions between solvent and solute.

Photocatalytic Degradation of Copper(II) Palmitates in Non Aqueous Media Using ZnO as Photocatalyst

The photocatalytic degradation of copper(II) soaps derived from palmitic acid was carried out in the presence of semiconductor zinc oxide (ZnO) and was observed spectrophotometrically. The operational parameters such as concentration of soap, catalyst loading, light intensity, effect of solvent were investigated during the process. The studies suggest that the rate of the photocatalytic degradation increases with the increase in the concentration of soap to 800 ppm and then continuously decreases. Rate of degradation increases with the amount of semiconductor and with further increase in the amount of semiconductor, the rate becomes constant. The degradation is maximum at a light intensity of 38 mW cm−2. An increase in the solvent polarity inhibits the rate of degradation. A tentative mechanism has also been proposed for the photocatalytic degradation of copper(II) palmitate soap.

Synthesis and characterization of some metal complexes of a proton transfer salt, and their inhibition studies on carbonic anhydrase isozymes and the evaluation of the results by statistical analysis

A novel proton transfer compound (HMeOABT)(+) (HDPC)(-) (1) and its Fe(III), Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes (2-5) have been prepared and characterized by spectroscopic techniques. Complex 4 has distorted octahedral conformation revealed by single crystal X-ray diffraction method. Structures of the other complexes might be proposed as octahedral according to experimental data. All compounds were also evaluated for their in vitro inhibition effects on hCA I and II for their hydratase and esterase activities. Although there is no inhibition for hydratase activities, all compounds have inhibited the esterase activities of hCA I and II. Data have been analyzed by using a one-way analysis of variance. The comparison of the inhibition studies of 1-5 to parent compounds indicates that 1-5 have superior inhibitory effects. The inhibition effects of 2-5 are also compared to inhibitory properties of the metal complexes of MeOABT and H2DPC, revealing an improved transfection profile.
