Solvent-Responsive Nonporous Adaptive Crystals Derived from Pyridinium Hydrochloride and the Application in Iodine Adsorption

Nonporous adaptive crystals (NACs) are crystalline nonporous materials that can undergo a structural adaptive phase transformation to accommodate specific guest via porous cavity or lattice voids. Most of the NACs are based on pillararenes because of their flexible backbone and intrinsic porous structure. Here a readily prepared organic hydrochloride of 4-(4-(diphenylamino)phenyl)pyridin-1-ium chloride (TPAPyH), exhibiting the solvent dimension-dependent adaptive crystallinity is reported. Wherein it forms a nonporous α crystal in a solvent with larger dimensions, while forming two porous β and γ crystals capable of accommodating solvent molecules in solvent with small size. Furthermore, the thermal-induced single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) transition from the β to α phase can be initiated. Upon exposure to iodine vapor or immersion in aqueous solution, the nonporous α phase transforms to porous β phase by adsorbing iodine molecules. Owing to the formation of trihalide anion I2Cl- within the crystal cavity, TPAPyH exhibits remarkable performance in iodine storage, with a high uptaking capacity of 1.27 g g-1 and elevated iodine desorption temperature of up to 110 and 82 °C following the first and second adsorption stage. The unexpected adaptivity of TPAPyH inspires the design of NACs for selective adsorption and separation of volatile compound from organic small molecules.

Structural Design and Energy and Environmental Applications of Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks: A Systematic Review

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) are emerging porous materials that show high structural flexibility, mild synthetic conditions, good solution processability, easy healing and regeneration, and good recyclability. Although these properties give them many potential multifunctional applications, their frameworks are unstable due to the presence of only weak and reversible hydrogen bonds. In this work, the development history and synthesis methods of HOFs are reviewed, and categorize their structural design concepts and strategies to improve their stability. More importantly, due to the significant potential of the latest HOF-related research for addressing energy and environmental issues, this work discusses the latest advances in the methods of energy storage and conversion, energy substance generation and isolation, environmental detection and isolation, degradation and transformation, and biological applications. Furthermore, a discussion of the coupling orientation of HOF in the cross-cutting fields of energy and environment is presented for the first time. Finally, current challenges, opportunities, and strategies for the development of HOFs to advance their energy and environmental applications are discussed.

Controllable π-π coupling of intramolecular dimer models in aggregated states

π-π coupling as a common interaction plays a key role in emissions, transport and mechanical properties of organic materials. However, the precise control of π-π coupling is still challenging owing to the possible interference from other intermolecular interactions in the aggregated state, usually resulting in uncontrollable emission properties. Herein, with the rational construction of intramolecular dimer models and crystal engineering, π-π coupling can be subtly modulated by conformation variation with balanced π-π and π-solvent interactions and visualized by green-to-blue emission switching. Moreover, it can rapidly respond to temperature, pressure and mechanical force, affording a facile way to modulate π-π coupling in situ. This work contributes to a deeper understanding of the internal mechanism of molecular motions in aggregated states.

Smart-Responsive HOF Heterostructures with Multiple Spatial-Resolved Emission Modes toward Photonic Security Platform

Luminescent hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) with the unique dynamics and versatile functional sites hold great potential application in information security, yet most of responsive HOFs focus on the single-component framework with restrained emission control, limiting further applications in advanced confidential information protection. Herein, the first smart-responsive HOF heterostructure with multiple spatial-resolved emission modes for covert photonic security platform is reported. The HOF heterostructures are prepared by integrating different HOFs into a single microwire based on a hydrogen-bond-assisted epitaxial growth method. The distinct responsive behaviors of HOFs permit the heterostructure to simultaneously display the thermochromism via the framework transformation and the acidichromism via the protonation effect, thus generating multiple emission modes. The dual stimuli-controlled spatial-resolved emission modes constitute the fingerprint of a heterostructure, and enable the establishment of the smart-responsive photonic barcode with multiple convert states, which further demonstrate the dynamic coding capability and enhanced security in anticounterfeiting label applications. These results offer a promising route to design function-oriented smart responsive HOF microdevices toward advanced anticounterfeiting applications.

Stimuli-fluorochromic smart organic materials

Smart materials based on stimuli-fluorochromic π-conjugated solids (SFCSs) have aroused significant interest due to their versatile and exciting properties, leading to advanced applications. In this review, we highlight the recent developments in SFCS-based smart materials, expanding beyond organometallic compounds and light-responsive organic luminescent materials, with a discussion on the design strategies, exciting properties and stimuli-fluorochromic mechanisms along with their potential applications in the exciting fields of encryption, sensors, data storage, display, green printing, etc. The review comprehensively covers single-component and multi-component SFCSs as well as their stimuli-fluorochromic behaviors under external stimuli. We also provide insights into current achievements, limitations, and major challenges as well as future opportunities, aiming to inspire further investigation in this field in the near future. We expect this review to inspire more innovative research on SFCSs and their advanced applications so as to promote further development of smart materials and devices.

Luminescent Porous Organic Crystals for Adsorptive Separation of Toluene and Methylcyclohexane

A butterfly-shaped phenothiazine derivative, PTTCN, was synthesized to obtain pure organic porous crystals for the highly efficient absorptive separation of toluene (Tol) and methylcyclohexane (Mcy). Due to the presence of three polar cyano groups and nonplanar conformation, these molecules self-assembled into a hydrogen-bonded organic framework (X-HOF-5) with distinct cavities capable of accommodating Tol molecules through multiple hydrogen-bonding interactions. Upon solvent removal via heating, the activated X-HOF-5 retained its cavity structure albeit with altered stacking arrangements, accompanied by a remarkable fluorescent color change from cyan to green. X-HOF-5a can undergo a phase transformation into X-HOF-5 upon reabsorption of Tol, while exhibiting no accommodation of Mcy due to the weak intermolecular interaction between PTTCN and Mcy. This suggests that the activated HOF material prefers Tol over Mcy. Moreover, X-HOF-5a may selectively accommodate Tol in a Tol/Mcy equimolar mixture, and the purity of Tol can reach 97% after release from the framework. Additionally, it is noteworthy that the HOF material exhibits recyclability without any discernible loss in performance.

A Nitro-Modified Luminescent Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework for Non-Contact and High-Contrast Sensing of Aromatic Amines

The global demand for intelligent sensing of aromatic amines has consistently increased due to concerns about health and the environment. Efforts to improve material design and understand mechanisms have been made, but highly efficient non-contact sensing with host-guest structures remains a challenge. Herein, we report the first example of non-contact, high-contrast sensing of aromatic amines in a hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF) based on a nitro-modified stereo building block. Direct observation of binding interactions of trapped amines is achieved, leading to charge separation-induced emission quenching between host and guests. Non-contact sensing of aniline and diphenylamine is realized with quenching efficiencies up to 91.7 % and 97.0 %, which shows potential for versatile applications. This work provides an inspiring avenue to engineer multifunctional HOFs via co-crystal preparations, thus enriching applications of porous materials with explicit mechanisms.

Flexible Luminescent Hydrogen-bonded Organic Framework for the Separation of Benzene and Cyclohexane

A nonplanar phenothiazine derivative with three cyano moieties (PTTCN) is designed and synthesized to achieve functional crystals for absorptive separation of benzene and cyclohexane. PTTCN can crystallize into two kinds of crystals with different fluorescence colors in different solvent systems. The molecules in two crystals are in different stereo isomeric forms of nitrogen, quasi axial (ax), and quasi equatorial (eq). The crystals with blue fluorescence in ax form may selectively adsorb benzene by a single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) transformation, but separated benzene from a benzene/cyclohexane equimolar mixture with a low purity of 79.6%. Interestingly, PTTCN molecules with eq form and benzene co-assembled to construct a hydrogen-bonded framework (X-HOF-4) with S-type solvent channels and yellow-green fluorescence, and can release benzene to form nonporous guest-free crystal under heating. Such nonporous crystals strongly favor aromatic benzene over cyclohexane and may selectively reabsorb benzene from benzene/cyclohexane equimolar mixture to recover original framework, and the purity of benzene can reach ≈96.5% after release from framework. Moreover, reversible transformation between the nonporous crystals and the guest-containing crystals allows the material to be reused.

A Multistimuli Responsive, Flexible Luminescent Framework and Its Applicability in Anticounterfeiting

A linear distyrylanthracene derivative (DDATAn) with two diaminotriazine (DAT) groups acting as the hydrogen bond (H-bond) units was designed and synthesized in order to construct flexible organic porous crystals. H-bonds between the DAT moieties helped the molecules to construct a double interpenetrated two-dimensional layer, and the stacking between layers provided a H-bonded organic framework (X-HOF-3) with one-dimensional solvent channels. When X-HOF-3 was placed in contact with methanol, the fluorescent colors of the HOF exhibited an apparent bathochromic shift. More interestingly, the methanol-activated HOF was able to rapidly adsorb water from the air, which was accompanied by a change in fluorescent color from yellow to red. Under heating, water was released from the HOF and the fluorescent color returned to yellow. Water molecules in the pores were also able to be released after an applied mechanical force disrupted the ordered structure of the HOF. Based on these stimuli-responsive properties, these HOFs can be used as advanced functional materials in anticounterfeiting applications.

Construction of Stable Magnetic Vinylene-Linked Covalent Organic Frameworks for Efficient Extraction of Benzimidazole Fungicides

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have attracted impressive interest in separation on aqueous media. Herein, we integrated the stable vinylene-linked COFs with magnetic nanosphere via the monomer-mediated in situ growth strategy to construct a crystalline Fe₃O₄@v-COF composite for enrichment and determination of benzimidazole fungicides (BZDs) from complex sample matrices. The Fe₃O₄@v-COF has a crystalline assembly, high surface area, porous character together with a well-defined core-shell structure, and serves as progressive pretreatment materials for magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) of BZDs. Adsorption mechanism studies revealed that the extended conjugated system and numerous polar cyan groups on v-COF provides abundant π-π and multiple hydrogen bonding sites, which are conducive to interact with BZDs collaboratively. Fe₃O₄@v-COF also displayed enrichment effects to various polar pollutions with conjugated structures and hydrogen-bonding sites. Fe₃O₄@v-COF-based MSPE-high-performance liquid chromatography exhibited the low limit of detection, wide linearity, and good precision. Moreover, Fe₃O₄@v-COF showed better stability, enhanced extraction performance, and more sustainable reusability in comparison with its imine-linked counterpart. This work proposes a feasible strategy on constructing the crystalline stable magnetic vinylene-linked COF composite for the determination of trace contaminants in complex food matrices.

Rotors tailoring molecular stacking for constructing multi-stimuli-responsive luminescent materials

We report a multi-stimuli-responsive luminescent material containing rotor moieties. It forms two types of crystals, G and O. The emission of G can be modulated by multiple external stimuli, whereas O does not show such responsiveness. The X-ray structure analysis reveals that the rotors are critical for the polymorphic emission and stimuli response properties.

Multifunctional Porous Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks: Current Status and Future Perspectives

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs), self-assembled from organic or metalated organic building blocks (also termed as tectons) by hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking, and other intermolecular interactions, have become an emerging class of multifunctional porous materials. So far, a library of HOFs with high porosity has been synthesized based on versatile tectons and supramolecular synthons. Benefiting from the flexibility and reversibility of H-bonds, HOFs feature high structural flexibility, mild synthetic reaction, excellent solution processability, facile healing, easy regeneration, and good recyclability. However, the flexible and reversible nature of H-bonds makes most HOFs suffer from poor structural designability and low framework stability. In this Outlook, we first describe the development and structural features of HOFs and summarize the design principles of HOFs and strategies to enhance their stability. Second, we highlight the state-of-the-art development of HOFs for diverse applications, including gas storage and separation, heterogeneous catalysis, biological applications, sensing, proton conduction, and other applications. Finally, current challenges and future perspectives are discussed.

Synthesis, Structural Characterization, and Guest Exchange Properties of Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks Based on Bis(benzimidazole)ZnCl2 Complexes

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) based on coordination compounds constitute a developing class of interesting porous materials. Herein, we report on the synthesis, crystal structures, and guest exchange properties of four HOFs based on zinc dichlorido complexes that bear a bis(benzimidazolyl)methane ligand (bis(benzimidazole)ZnCl₂). The porous structures of these bis(benzimidazole)ZnCl₂-based HOFs are characterized predominantly by intermolecular N-H···Cl hydrogen bonds in conjunction with π-π interactions. One of these HOFs was found to exchange guest molecules via single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformations with or without structural change. A single-crystal X-ray diffraction study revealed that the guest exchange accompanied by a structural change is induced by the cleavage of the N-H···Cl hydrogen bonds between the bis(benzimidazole)ZnCl₂ complexes, followed by the formation of alternate hydrogen bonds with guest molecules. This result suggests that the use of weaker N-H···Cl hydrogen bonds than those typically used for the construction of HOFs (e.g., carboxylic acid dimers, N-heterocycles, and charge-assisted moieties) may represent a convenient strategy to synthesize flexible HOFs.

Two Cholesterol-Containing Pyrene Derivatives: Subtle Spacer Difference, Diverse Stimuli-Responsive Luminescence, Chirality, and Self-Assembly Behaviors

Two chiral molecules 1 and 2 were designed and synthesized with a pyrene moiety directly linked to a chiral cholesterol moiety and connected through a methylene spacer, respectively. Influence of the spacer on their stimuli-responsive luminescence, chirality, and self-assembly behaviors was systematically investigated. Molecules 1 and 2 had similar aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) in solution, because of carrying the same fluorescence moiety. Both molecules displayed mechanochromism (MC) property but with different color contrast, whereas only 2 showed mechanoluminescence (ML) activity. When doping in liquid crystal molecule 5CB, both molecules induced the formation of chiral nematic liquid crystals (N*-LCs) with strong circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). Molecule 2 induced single handedness signal, irrespective of doping ratios, while 1-doped N*-LCs showed an inversion of CPL signal from negative to positive upon the increase of doping ratios. Molecules 1 and 2 also self-assembled into different coassemblies with 5CB. Their distinct behaviors were attributed to the influence of the methylene spacer, which caused different molecular conformation and steric bulkiness; accordingly, it changed intermolecular interactions and molecular packing of the two molecules and led to diverse chirality and luminescence. This work provided important model molecules to better understand the molecular structure-property relationship and guide the design of novel functional molecules.

Design Rules of Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks with High Chemical and Thermal Stabilities

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs), self-assembled from strategically pre-designed molecular tectons with complementary hydrogen-bonding patterns, are rapidly evolving into a novel and important class of porous materials. In addition to their common features shared with other functionalized porous materials constructed from modular building blocks, the intrinsically flexible and reversible H-bonding connections endow HOFs with straightforward purification procedures, high crystallinity, solution processability, and recyclability. These unique advantages of HOFs have attracted considerable attention across a broad range of fields, including gas adsorption and separation, catalysis, chemical sensing, and electrical and optical materials. However, the relatively weak H-bonding interactions within HOFs can potentially limit their stability and potential use in further applications. To that end, this Perspective highlights recent advances in the development of chemically and thermally robust HOF materials and systematically discusses relevant design rules and synthesis strategies to access highly stable HOFs.

Tunable Fluorescence in Two-Component Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks Based on Energy Transfer

A dumbbell-shaped compound (TPAD) with four 2,4-diaminotriazine moieties as H-bond units and a benzene ring as a bridge group was found to form hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) with strong cyan fluorescence. An energy acceptor, 6,6',6″,6‴-(((benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole-4,7-diylbis-(4,1-phenylene))bis(azanetriyl))tetrakis(benzene-4,1-diyl))tetrakis(1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine) (BTAD), with the same molecular skeleton as TPAD and a longer emission wavelength could homogeneously distribute within the framework of TPAD through occupying the locations of TPAD. As a result, two-component HOFs (TC-HOFs) were formed. The nonradiative energy transfer from TPAD as the donor to BTAD as the acceptor happens within frameworks owing to the efficient spectral overlap between the emission of TPAD and the absorption of BTAD. Moreover, the emission wavelengths and colors of TC-HOFs could be easily and continuously modulated by the content of the acceptor. The fluorescence color changed from cyan to orange when the content of BTAD gradually increased. This finding affirms that TC-HOFs with continuously adjustable composition can be constructed from two molecules with the same molecular skeleton, and highly efficient nonradiative energy transfer may happen in porous TC-HOFs. To the best of our knowledge, these TC-HOFs are the first example of TC-HOFs involved in energy transfer.

Supramolecular Hydrogen Bonding Assembly from Non-Coplanar Aromatic Tetra-1H-Pyrazoles with Crystallization-Induced Emission (CIE)

Here, we report a design strategy for constructing supramolecular organic frameworks by introducing ¹H-pyrazole groups to aromatic cores as non-coplanar molecules to form diverse supramolecular assemblies through multiple ¹H-pyrazole [N−H···N] hydrogen bonds as well as other weak interactions. The new supramolecular organic frameworks displayed interesting crystallization-induced emission (CIE) behavior.

Metallization-Prompted Robust Porphyrin-Based Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks for Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

Under topological guidance, the self-assembly process based on a tetratopic porphyrin synthon results in a hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF) with the predicted square layers topology (sql) but unsatisfied stability. Strikingly, simply introducing a transition metal in the porphyrin center does not change the network topology but drastically causes noticeable change on noncovalent interaction, orbital overlap, and molecular geometry, therefore ultimately giving rise to a series of metalloporphyrinic HOFs with high surface area, and excellent stability (intact after being soaked in boiling water, concentrated HCl, and heated to 270 °C). On integrating both photosensitizers and catalytic sites into robust backbones, this series of HOFs can effectively catalyze the photoreduction of CO₂ to CO, and their catalytic performances greatly depend on the chelated metal species in the porphyrin centers. This work enriches the library of stable functional HOFs and expands their applications in photocatalytic CO₂ reduction.
