Abstract
Genetic selection for resilience is essential to improve the long-term sustainability of the dairy cattle industry, especially the ability of cows to maintain their level of production when exposed to environmental disturbances. Recording of daily milk yield provides an opportunity to develop resilience indicators based on milk losses and fluctuations in daily milk yield caused by environmental disturbances. In this context, our study aimed to explore milk loss traits and measures of variability in daily milk yield, including log-transformed standard deviation of milk deviations (Lnsd), lag-1 autocorrelation (Ra), and skewness of the deviations (Ske), as indicators of general resilience in dairy cows. The unperturbed dynamics of milk yield as well as milk loss were predicted using an iterative procedure of lactation curve modeling. Milk fluctuations were defined as a period of at least 10 successive days of negative deviations in which milk yield dropped at least once below 90% of the expected values. Genetic parameters of these indicators and their genetic correlation with economically important traits were estimated using single-trait and bivariate animal models and 8,935 lactations (after quality control) from 6,816 Chinese Holstein cows. In general, cows experienced an average of 3.73 environmental disturbances with a milk loss of 267 kg of milk per lactation. Each fluctuation lasted for 19.80 ± 11.46 days. Milk loss traits are heritable with heritability estimates ranging from 0.004 to 0.061. The heritabilities differed between Lnsd (0.135-0.250), Ra (0.008-0.058), and Ske (0.001-0.075), with the highest heritability estimate of 0.250 ± 0.020 for Lnsd when removing the first and last 10 days in milk in a lactation (Lnsd2). Based on moderate to high genetic correlations, lower Lnsd2 is associated with less milk losses, better reproductive performance, and lower disease incidence. These findings indicate that among the variables evaluated, Lnsd2 is the most promising indicator for breeding for improved resilience in Holstein cattle.

Abstract
Tropical and subtropical milk production herds in Mexico generally generate different types of milk-yield records as milk yield per month and mean production per month. Lactation curves generated by these types of records may contribute to understand milk production in the tropical regions of Mexico. The aim of this study was to compare five lactation-curve models fitted to two types of milk-yield records of Holstein, Brown Swiss, and F1 crossbred cows under subtropical conditions. The two types of records (n = 3756) used were: (1) milk yield per month (TR) and 2) mean production per months (MR). Goodness-of-fit statistics, including Akaike's information criterion (AIC) and root mean square error (RMSE), were applied to compare the models for each type of records. The Brody model provided the best goodness-of-fit when using monthly milk-yield records, while the Wilmink model provided the best goodness-of-fit for lactation milk-yield records. The RMSE and AIC values were similar between datasets. The final third of the lactation curve showed a little difference between model predictions in both datasets. The comparison of several models was useful to better describe the actual lactation curves of the herd. The Wood model may be adequate to compare information as a reference with other models for decision making process at milk production.

Abstract
Simple Summary Considering the seasonal trend of milk production due to application of estrus synchronization treatments in autumn or in spring season, as well as to meet meat production and market requirements for religious holidays, one may find it useful to simplify the milk and milk constituent yield quantification during the entire period of lactation. The present work aimed to verify the application of Wood’s model to a different number of test-day milk recording protocols in order to reduce the frequency of National Breeding Association test-day milking record protocol. Wood’s model fit well on goat milk production, showing high R2 values. Moreover, the milk yield, fat-corrected milk yield, fat yield, and protein yield estimation applying Wood’s model to four recordings (first, second, fourth, and sixth month records) showed results superimposable to International Committee of Animal Recording (ICAR) application and Wood’s model application on test-day records every 15 days. Abstract Goats have important social and economic roles in many countries because of their ability to survive and be productive in marginal areas. The overarching aim of this study was to compare the application of Wood’s model to different test-day milk recording protocols for estimation of total milk, fat, and protein yield in dairy goats. A total of 465 goats were used (Garganica, 78; Girgentana, 81; Jonica, 76; Maltese, 77; Red Mediterranean, 76; Saanen, 77). Milk yield was recorded every 15 days throughout lactation of 210 days, for a total of 14 collection days, during both morning and afternoon milking sessions. Milk samples were collected and analyzed for protein and fat. The fat-corrected milk was standardized at 35g fat/kg of milk. Wood models showed high R2 values, and thus good fitting, in all the considered breeds. Wood model applied to first, second, fourth, and sixth month recordings (C) and ICAR estimation showed total milk yield very close to Wood’s model applied to all 14 recordings (A) (p > 0.38). Differently, Wood’s model applied to the first, second, third, and fourth month recording (B) estimation showed great differences (p < 0.01). This could be applied for farms that had the necessity to synchronize flock groups for kidding in order to produce kid meat. In farms that apply the estrus induction and/or synchronization for kidding, it would be possible to perform only four test-day milk recordings and to apply the Wood’s model on them in order to obtain the estimation of total milk, fat, and protein yield during lactation for animals inscribed, or to be inscribed, to the genealogical book.

Abstract
We conducted a longitudinal study to evaluate the effect of non-aureus staphylococci (NAS) causing subclinical intramammary infections (IMI) on quarter milk somatic cell count (qSCC) and quarter milk yield (qMY). In total, 324 quarters of 82 Holstein Friesian heifers were followed from calving to 130 d in milk (DIM) and were sampled 10 times each at 14-d intervals. The IMI status of each quarter was determined based on bacterial culture results at the current and previous or next sampling day, or both. The qSCC was determined on each sampling day and the average qMY on sampling day was available through stored daily milk weight data in the management program of the automatic milking system. A transient IMI (tIMI) was defined as a case where a specific pathogen was isolated from a quarter on only one sampling day and not on the previous or next sampling day. When the same bacterial strain, as defined by random amplification of polymorphic DNA-PCR, was isolated from the same quarter on multiple sampling days, it was defined as a persistent IMI (pIMI) status on those sampling days; a pIMI episode was defined as the combination of multiple consecutive pIMI statuses with the same bacterial strain on different sampling days. During this study, 142 subclinical IMI with NAS occurred in 116 different quarters from 64 animals, yielding in total 304 NAS isolates belonging to 17 different species. The prevalence of NAS was highest in the first 4 DIM. Overall, the predominant species was Staphylococcus chromogenes (52% of the isolates), followed by S. epidermidis (9.2%), S. xylosus (8.2%), and S. equorum (5.9%). Staphylococcus chromogenes was the only species for which an effect on qSCC and qMY could be analyzed separately; the other NAS species were considered as a group because of their low prevalence. Eighteen out of 40 IMI (45%) caused by S. chromogenes persisted over at least 2 sampling days, whereas only 10 of 102 (9.8%) IMI caused by other NAS species persisted for at least 2 sampling days. The average duration of pIMI episodes was 110.4 d for S. chromogenes and 70 d for the other NAS species. Remarkably, 17 of the 18 pIMI episodes with S. chromogenes started within the first 18 DIM. The qSCC was highest in quarters having a pIMI with a major pathogen, followed by quarters having a pIMI with S. chromogenes, and a pIMI with other NAS. Transient IMI with other NAS or with a major pathogen caused a small but significantly higher qSCC, whereas the qSCC in quarters having a tIMI with S. chromogenes was not statistically different compared with noninfected quarters. No significant differences in qMY were observed between quarters having a pIMI or tIMI with S. chromogenes or with the other NAS species compared with noninfected quarters, despite the higher qSCC. Quarters having a pIMI with major pathogens showed significantly lower daily milk production. Surprisingly, quarters that cured from an IMI with S. chromogenes had a significantly lower qMY than noninfected quarters.

Abstract
Objective The aim of the paper was to compare the fit of data derived from daily automatic milking systems (AMS) and monthly test-day records with the use of lactation curves; data was analysed separately for primiparas and multiparas. Methods The study was carried out on three Polish Holstein-Friesians (PHF) dairy herds. The farms were equipped with an automatic milking system which provided information on milking performance throughout lactation. Once a month cows were also subjected to test-day milkings (method A4). Most studies described in the literature are based on test-day data; therefore, we aimed to compare models based on both test-day and AMS data to determine which mathematical model (Wood or Wilmink) would be the better fit. Results Results show that lactation curves constructed from data derived from the AMS were better adjusted to the actual milk yield (MY) data regardless of the lactation number and model. Also, we found that the Wilmink model may be a better fit for modelling the lactation curve of PHF cows milked by an AMS as it had the lowest values of Akaike information criterion, Bayesian information criterion, mean square error, the highest coefficient of determination values, and was more accurate in estimating MY than the Wood model. Although both models underestimated peak MY, mean, and total MY, the Wilmink model was closer to the real values. Conclusion Models of lactation curves may have an economic impact and may be helpful in terms of herd management and decision-making as they assist in forecasting MY at any moment of lactation. Also, data obtained from modelling can help with monitoring milk performance of each cow, diet planning, as well as monitoring the health of the cow.

Abstract
A good health status of high-performing dairy cows is essential for successful production. Feed intake affects the metabolic stability of dairy cows and can be used as a measurement for energy balance. By implementing feed intake and energy balance into the breeding goal, these traits provide great potential for an improvement in the health of dairy cows by breeders. In this study, fixed and random regression models were tested to establish appropriate models for a further analysis of this approach. A total of 1,374 Holstein-Friesian cows and 327 Simmental cows (SI) from 12 German research farms participating in a collaboration called optiKuh were phenotyped. Feed intake data recording was standardized across farms, and energy balance was calculated using phenotypic information on milk yield, milk ingredients, live weight, gestation stage, and feed intake. The phenotypic data set consisted of a total of 40,012 Holstein-Friesian and 16,996 SI with average weekly dry matter intakes of 21.8 ± 4.3 and 20.2 ± 3.6 kg/d, respectively. Observations of days in milk 1 to 350 were used to evaluate the best-fitting models and to estimate the repeatability and correlations between cow effects at different stages for feed intake and energy balance. Four parametric functions (Ali and Schaeffer and Legendre polynomials of second, third, and fourth degree) were compared to model the lactation curves. Based on the corrected Akaike information criterion and the Bayesian information criterion, the goodness of fit was evaluated to choose the best-fitting model for the finest description of lactation curves for the traits energy balance and feed intake. Legendre polynomial fourth degree was the best-fitting model for random regression models. In contrast, Ali and Schaeffer was the best choice for fixed regression models. Feed intake and energy balance acted as expected: the feed intake increased slowly at the beginning of lactation and the negative energy balance switched to a positive range around 40 to 80 d of lactation. The repeatabilities of both traits were quite similar and the repeatabilities for SI were the highest for both traits. Additionally, correlations between cow effects were closest between early days in milk. These results emphasize the possibility that the unique optiKuh data set can be used for further genetic analyses to enable genomic selection for feed intake or energy balance.
