Abstract
This study evaluated the effects of replacing cereal grains and soybean meal with by-products (BY) on production performance, nutrient digestibility, ruminal fermentation, nutrient recovery, and eating and chewing behavior of moderate-producing dairy cows under heat-stress conditions. Twelve multiparous Holstein cows (116.7 ± 12.01 d in milk; 42.7 ± 5.06 kg/d milk yield; 665 ± 77 kg body weight; mean ± SD) were used in a replicated 3 × 3 Latin square with 28-d periods (21 d for diet adaptation and 7 d for sampling and data collection). Cows were fed a total mixed ration containing a 39.2:60.8 ratio of forage to concentrate throughout the experiment. All diets were formulated to be isoenergetic and isonitrogenous, with different concentrates. Diets were (1) control diet based on cereal grains (CON: ground corn and ground barley, plus soybean meal); (2) sugar-rich BY diet (S-BY-CM: beet pulp, citrus pulp, and liquid molasses, plus canola meal); and (3) cereal grain BY diet (CG-BY: rice bran, corn germ meal, wheat bran, barley sprout, and broken corn). Our results showed that replacing grains with BY increased neutral detergent fiber intake and digestibility but decreased starch intake, human-edible energy, and human-edible protein. Milk yield and dry matter intake (DMI) decreased more in cows fed the CG-BY diet compared with the other 2 treatments. In contrast, no significant differences were observed between the CON and S-BY-CM diets in terms of milk yield and DMI. The S-BY-CM diet increased energy-corrected milk production compared with the CG-BY diet (36.2 vs. 34.3 kg/d), but CG-BY enhanced feed conversion efficiency compared with the other 2 treatments. Although the S-BY-CM diet prolonged the eating and sorting of small particles, neither of the dietary treatments affected chewing activity or ruminal pH 4 h after feeding. Furthermore, both diets containing BY contributed to an increase in milk fat content in comparison to the CON group. Additionally, the CG-BY and S-BY-CM diets demonstrated better performance than the CON diet in terms of human-edible feed conversion efficiency for protein and energy. The results indicated that S-BY-CM can completely replace barley and corn grain in the diet of mid-lactating dairy cows exposed to heat-stress conditions without any negative effect on production and ruminal pH. However, the inclusion of CG-BY did impair DMI, milk yield, and digestibility of nutrients and is not recommended during heat-stress conditions.

Effects of Autolyzed Yeast Supplementation in a High-Starch Diet on Rumen Health, Apparent Digestibility, and Production Variables of Lactating Holstein Cows. Animals (Basel) 2022; 12:ani12182445. Abstract
Fifteen multiparous rumen-cannulated Holstein cows were assigned to one of five treatments in a replicated 5 × 5 Latin square design. The treatments were low-starch (LS) (22.8 ± 1% of dry matter; DM) without autolyzed yeast (AY; LS0, control), high-starch (HS) (31.2 ± 4% of DM) without AY (HS0), and HS with either 15 g (HS15), 30 g (HS30), or 45 g (HS45) of AY supplementation. Cows in HS0 had increased (p < 0.03) dry matter intake (DMI; 24.9 kg/d) and energy-corrected milk (ECM; 34.4 kg/d) compared to cows in LS0 (19.9 and 31.3 kg/d, respectively). There was a tendency for a quadratic treatment effect for feed efficiency (ECM/DMI, p = 0.07) and crude protein (CP) apparent digestibility (AD) (p = 0.09). Cows in HS45 tended (p = 0.09) to have increased DMI (25.6 kg/d) compared to cows in HS0 (24.9 kg/d). Cows in HS0 had greater (p < 0.04) milk protein nitrogen (N; 166 g/d) and microbial N production (161 g/d) than those in LS0 (140 and 138 g/d, respectively). In conclusion, the addition of AY tended to improve DMI, feed efficiency, and CP AD when cows were fed the HS diet.

Abstract
This trial tested whether rumen-protected Lys (RPL) supplementation would improve the nutritive value of rumen-undegradable protein (RUP) from corn protein. Thirty-two lactating Holstein cows were blocked by days in milk and parity into 8 squares of 4 cows each in replicated 4 × 4 Latin squares. Treatments provided all supplemental crude protein from: (1) soy protein (67% expeller soybean meal plus 33% solvent soybean meal); (2) a blend of soy and corn protein (33% expeller soybean meal, 17% solvent soybean meal, 25% corn gluten meal plus 25% distillers dried grains with solubles); (3) corn protein (50% corn gluten meal plus 50% distillers dried grains with solubles); or (4) corn protein plus RPL [diet 3 top-dressed with RPL (125 g/d of AjiPro-L Generation 1, supplying an estimated 20 g of absorbable Lys/d)]. Diets contained (dry matter basis) 22% alfalfa silage, 43% corn silage, 18% ground high-moisture and dry corn, 2.4% mineral-vitamin premix, 1.5 to 3.9% soy hulls, 15% crude protein, 30 to 32% neutral detergent fiber and predicted to contain equal rumen-degradable protein, RUP, and metabolizable protein. Cows within squares were randomly assigned to treatment sequences and fed diets for 4-wk periods before switching; production data and blood samples were collected during last 2 wk of each period. Data were analyzed using the mixed procedures of SAS. Intake was highest on diet 1, intermediate on diets 2 and 3, and lowest on diet 4; body weight gain was highest on diet 3, intermediate on diets 1 and 2 and lowest on diet 4. Intakes and body weight changes were reflected by differences in milk/dry matter intake, which was highest on diets 2 and 4 and lowest on diet 3. Milk yield was lower on diet 3 (44.3 kg/d) than on diets 1, 2, and 4 (average 45.8 kg/d) and protein yield was highest on diets 1 and 2 (average 1.35 kg/d), intermediate on diet 4 (1.30 kg/d), and lowest on diet 3 (1.25 kg/d). No effects of diet were detected on ruminal metabolites. Free nonessential amino acids and total protein AA were elevated in blood plasma on diet 3, reflecting reduced utilization for milk protein synthesis. These results indicated that 50% dilution of soybean meal RUP with that from corn protein did not reduce yield and that supplementing RPL to the corn protein-based diet increased yield 1.1 kg of milk/d and 50 g of true protein/d.

Abstract
This study investigated the effects of substituting ear corn silage (ECS) for commercial formula feed on milk production and milk fatty acid profiles in grazing dairy farms during the summer season. A field survey was conducted on five grazing dairy farms in every summer month of 2017, 2018, and 2019. Three of the five farms substituted fresh ECS for the commercial formula feed at a ratio of 2:1 from July of each year (ECS farms). Other farms maintained the same feeding management as before (non-ECS farms). An interview survey was conducted on each farm to calculate feed intake and milk yield per cow. Feed and milk samples were collected in each survey. Milk compositions and milk fatty acid profiles were determined. The substitution of ECS for the commercial formula feed did not affect milk yield or milk composition, but ECS farms maintained low levels of milk urea compared with non-ECS farms (p < .01). The ECS substitution also influenced some of the milk fatty acid proportions; C16:0 and C16:1 increased, and trans-11 C18:1, cis-9,trans-11 C18:2, and the sum of polyunsaturated fatty acids decreased, while these fatty acid proportions were maintained in non-ECS farms throughout the summer season (p < .05).

Abstract
ABSTRACT The objective for this study was to evaluate the supplementation with different non-fibrous carbohydrate (NFC) sources for grazing dairy cows in diets with high or low concentrations of rumen undegradable protein (RUP). Twelve multiparous cows averaging 30kg/d of milk production and 45±23 days in milk in a 4x4 Latin square design with 2 × 2 factorial arrangement were used. The difference in NFC content of the diets was achieved using ground corn (GC) or dried citrus pulp (DCP). Dietary RUP was altered by the partial replacement of soybean meal (LRUP) by roasted whole soybean and corn gluten meal (HRUP). Greater dry matter intake (DMI) was observed in DCP treatments compared to GC treatments (19.2 and 17.7kg/day of DM, respectively). Milk fat concentration was lower for LRUP treatments (3.4%) when compared to HRUP (3.6%). The milk protein concentration was greater for GC treatments (2.9%) in relation to DCP treatments (2.8%). Lower milk ureic nitrogen was observed when DCP diets were fed compared to those with GC (17.8 and 21.2mg/dL, respectively). The use of DCP as CNF source increased dry matter intake as well as milk fat concentration, although no differences in milk production were observed for RUP level.

Abstract
Protein is an expensive component of the dairy cow diet, and overfeeding protein can have adverse economic and environmental impacts. Our objective was to maintain milk production and components while decreasing dietary crude protein (CP) through use of a heat-treated, rumen-resistant sugar amino acid complex (SAAC) as the Schiff base, as an addition to low-protein diets. Dietary treatments included a negative control [NC, 146 g of CP/kg of dry matter (DM)], a positive control (PC, 163 g of CP/kg of DM), and the NC supplemented with SAAC in lieu of some barley grain (SAAD, 151 g of CP/kg of DM). Diets were fed to 30 multiparous Holstein-Friesian dairy cows for the first 50 d postpartum. Dry matter intake (DMI) was determined daily. Milk yield and content of fat, protein, lactose, and casein were recorded weekly from wk 2 to 7 of lactation. The fixed effects of treatment, week, treatment × week, month of calving, and BCS at calving, and a random effect of cow, were analyzed using the MIXED procedure of SAS (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC). The SAAD treatment had greater energy-corrected milk yield than did NC. The PC treatment had greater DMI than did NC, and SAAD tended to have greater DMI than did NC. We found significant treatment effects for fat percentage and yield. The NC and SAAD treatments had higher fat percentages than did PC, and SAAD had a higher fat yield than did the NC and PC treatments. Treatment effects were found for casein yield and percentage. We discovered a treatment effect for protein percentage and yield. The PC treatment had higher protein percentage than did NC and SAAD. The PC treatment had a higher protein yield than did NC, and analysis revealed no difference in protein yield between PC and SAAD. The SAAD treatment had higher total milk solids than did the NC treatment. Lactose yield tended to be higher in PC than in NC, and no differences were found between PC and NC and SAAD treatments. The PC treatment had a higher casein percentage than did NC and SAAD; however, the SAAD and PC treatments had higher casein yields than did NC. The PC treatment had a higher casein:fat ratio than did the NC and SAAD treatments. The NC and SAAD treatments had higher Cheddar cheese yields than did PC. We found no treatment × week interactions for any parameter. Supplementing low-protein dairy cow diets with a heat-treated, rumen-resistant SAAC caused beneficial effects by improving milk components and increasing cheese yield to levels similar to those found when feeding expensive and environmentally damaging high-protein diets.

Abstract
During recent decades, the UK dairy industry has had to adjust to the introduction of milk quotas in 1984, the deregulation of milk markets in 1994, and accommodate changes in the demand for dairy products. The combination of these factors, in addition to Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy and Foot and Mouth disease, and a fall in milk price has inevitably resulted in a restructuring of the industry, but also reinforced the need for all sectors of the industry to respond to the prevailing economic climate and changes in consumer preferences.

Abstract
This study investigated the effects of partially replacing barley grains with sugar beet pulp (SBP), with and without roasted canola seed (RCS) on ruminal pH, ruminal volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentrations, ruminal histomorphometric characteristics, and performance in finishing lambs fed a high concentrate diet. Twenty-four Arabian male lambs (23.7 ± 2.5 kg bodyweight, 118 ± 10 days in age) were used for 99 days in a completely randomised design with a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement. Lambs were fed with a high concentrate diet containing (1) 68% barley (B) (2) barley plus 7% RCS (B + RCS) (3) 36% SBP, (4) SBP plus 7% RCS (SBP + RCS). Ruminal fluid pH and VFA concentrations were determined at 0, 2, 4 and 8 h post-feeding 1 day before slaughter day. Tissue samples were collected for histomorphometric study at slaughter day. Average daily gain of the lambs was not affected by partial replacement of barley with SBP, however it was improved by RCS inclusion (P < 0.05). Diets with RCS had significantly lower (P < 0.05) neutral detergent fibre and acid detergent fibre digestibility values than diets without RCS (P < 0.05). Both SBP and RCS increased ruminal pH, molar proportions of acetate, isobutyrate but decreased molar proportion of propionate in rumen content (P < 0.05). The height, width, epithelial thickness and tunica muscularis of rumen papilla and reticulum folds were increased by SBP (P < 0.05). Density of reticulum folds were higher in lambs fed by higher SBP (P < 0.05). Inclusion of RCS significantly increased papillae height and thickness of epithelium (P < 0.05). In conclusion, partially replacing barley with SBP as well as RCS inclusion prevented a drop in the ruminal pH, and improved the morphology of the rumen-reticulum in finishing lambs fed a high concentrate diet.

Abstract
The effects of dietary feeding different levels of recycled poultry bedding (RPB) and dried orange pulp (DOP) on the performance of fattening Shal lambs (initial BW of 28 ± 2.2 kg) were assessed using a factorial experiment (2 × 3) with a completely randomized design. Six diets, containing different levels of RPB (0 or 160 g/kg of DM) and DOP (0, 110, or 220 g/kg of DM), were randomly assigned to 6 groups of 6 lambs each for a 74-d period (14 d for adaptation and 60 d for data collection). Diets were offered as total mixed ration to ensure 10% of orts. Feed intake, growth, diet digestibility, microbial nitrogen (N) synthesis (MNS), N retention, rumen fermentation parameters, and blood metabolites were determined. Data were analyzed using the PROC MIXED of SAS. Increasing RPB and DOP levels in the diet of the lambs improved ( < 0.05) DMI, ADG, and G:F. Diet digestibility was not affected by dietary feeding of RPB ( > 0.05), but increased as DOP level increased in the diet ( < 0.05). Feeding RPB and DOP had no effects ( > 0.05) on the ruminal pH. The ruminal total VFA concentration, molar proportion of acetic acid, and acetate-to-propionate ratio increased ( < 0.05) with the increasing dietary levels of RPB and DOP, while ammonia N concentration, propionic acid proportion, total protozoa count, and subfamily number decreased ( < 0.05). Including RPB and DOP in diet enhanced ( < 0.05) MNS and N retention. Feeding RPB-containing diets caused ( < 0.05) an increase of plasma glucose concentration and decreases ( < 0.05) of cholesterol and urea N. As the dietary level of DOP increased, the plasma concentrations of glucose, triglycerides, and urea N reduced ( < 0.05). The plasma antioxidant power was not affected ( > 0.05) by feeding RPB, but increased ( < 0.05) with increasing DOP level in diet. The animal performance reached its greatest value with simultaneous feeding of 160 g of RPB and 220 g of DOP per kg of diet DM. It has been concluded that the partial dietary substitution of RPB (instead of soybean meal, wheat bran, and sugar beet pulp) or/and DOP (instead of barley grain and corn grain) in fattening Shal lambs had positive effects on feed intake, diet digestibility, ruminal microbial N, growth, and N retention. Synchronized feeding of the great levels of RPB (as an N source) and DOP (as an energy source) increased utilization efficiency of these byproducts in the fattening lambs.

Abstract
Four trials were conducted to evaluate the effects of flint corn processing and the replacement of corn with citrus pulp (CiP) in diets for Nellore feedlot cattle. In a 103-d finishing trial, 216 Nellore bulls (350 ± 24 kg initial BW) were used in a randomized complete block design with a 2 × 4 factorial arrangement of treatments. Factors included 2 processing methods, either ground corn (GC) or steam-flaked corn (FC), with CiP replacing each corn type at 4 levels (0, 25, 50, and 75% of DM). All diets contained 12% sugarcane bagasse and 88% concentrate (DM basis). Treatments were also evaluated in metabolism trials, in which 10 ruminally cannulated Nellore steers (389 ± 37 kg) were assigned to 2 independent but simultaneous 5 × 5 Latin squares, each using 1 method of corn processing (GC and FC). Interactions ( < 0.05) between corn processing and CiP inclusion level were observed for final BW, DMI, ADG, G:F, and HCW. With FC-based diets, added CiP linearly decreased final BW ( = 0.04), whereas with GC-based diets, added CiP quadratically increased final BW ( = 0.002). With FC-based diets, the inclusion of CiP linearly increased DMI ( = 0.03) and linearly decreased ADG ( = 0.03) and G:F ( = 0.001). Increasing CiP in GC-based diets quadratically increased DMI ( = 0.001), ADG ( = 0.005), and HCW ( = 0.003). In FC-based diets, CiP inclusion had no effect on HCW ( = 0.21). Dressing percent, LM area, and 12th-rib fat were not affected by diet ( ≥ 0.05). For steers fed GC diets, CiP inclusion in the diet quadratically decreased the molar proportion of isovalerate ( = 0.001) but linearly increased ruminal butyrate ( = 0.006). No differences ( ≥ 0.16) were observed for total VFA concentrations, acetate:propionate ratio, and ruminal NH-N as CiP replaced GC. For steers fed FC diets, the molar proportion of acetate linearly increased ( = 0.002) whereas the proportion of propionate was linearly decreased ( < 0.001), resulting in a linear increase ( = 0.001) in the acetate:propionate ratio. Replacing corn with CiP linearly reduced NEm ( = 0.001) and NEg ( < 0.001) of FC-based diets but did not affect ( = 0.15) NE values of CG-based diets. Steam flaking flint corn improved cattle performance in this trial more than has been reported for dent corn in the published literature.

Abstract
Avaliou-se o desempenho de vacas leiteiras que consumiram polpa cítrica e dois teores dietéticos de silagem de grão úmido de milho. Os tratamentos foram: milho de textura dura ou milho de textura macia ensilado na linha negra, em fatorial com 9% ou 18% de milho na dieta. O teor de polpa cítrica na dieta foi de 16,2% ou 25,6%, com alto e baixo milho, respectivamente. Doze vacas receberam os tratamentos em quadrados latinos 4x4. A produção diária de leite foi 27,9kg no milho duro e 28,8 no macio (P=0,19). Alto milho diminuiu o teor de gordura do leite de 3,38 para 3,26% (P=0,04) e aumentou o teor de proteína de 2,99 para 3,03% (P=0,05) e a eficiência alimentar de 1,50 para 1,57kg de leite/kg de consumo (P=0,03). Aumento no teor de milho induziu maior queda no pH ruminal na dieta com milho macio do que na dieta com milho duro (P=0,05 para a interação textura versus teor de milho). O milho macio aumentou o consumo diário de matéria orgânica digestível de 11,7 para 12,3kg (P=0,05). Os parâmetros digestivos sugerem que a ensilagem não eliminou totalmente o efeito da textura do endosperma sobre a digestibilidade do milho.

Abstract
To investigate the effects of different sources of carbohydrates on intake, digestibility, chewing, and performance, nine lactating Holstein dairy cows (day in milk= 100±21 d; body weight=645.7 ± 26.5 kg) were allotted to a 3 × 3 Latin square design at three 23-d periods. The three treatments included 34.91% (B), 18.87% (BC), and 18.86% (BB) barley that in treatment B was partially replaced with only corn or corn plus beet pulp in treatments BC and BB, respectively. The concentration of starch and neutral detergent soluble carbohydrate varied (22.2, 20.2, and 14.5; 13.6, 15.9, and 20.1% of DM in treatments B, BC, and BB, respectively). Cows in treatment BB showed a higher DMI and improved digestibility of DM, NDF, and EE compared with treatments B or BC. Ruminal pH was higher in cows fed on BB (6.83) compared with those that received B or BC treatments (6.62 and 6.73, respectively). A lower proportion of propionate accompanied the higher pH in the BB group; however, a greater proportion of acetate and acetate: propionate ratio was observed compared with cows fed either on the B or BC diet. Moreover, cows fed on the BB diet showed the lowest ruminal passage rate and longest ruminal and total retention time. Eating time did not differ among treatments, rumination time was greater among cows fed on the BB diet compared with the others, whereas total chewing activity was greater than those fed on BC, but similar to those fed on B. The treatments showed no effect on milk yield. Partially replacing barley with corn or beet pulp resulted in an increase in milk fat and a lower protein concentration. Changing dietary NFC with that of a different degradability thus altered intake, chewing activity, ruminal environment, retention time or passage rate, and lactation performance. The results of this study showed that beet pulp with a higher NDF and a detergent-soluble carbohydrate or pectin established a more consistent ruminal mat than barley and corn, thus resulting in higher mean retention time and chewing activity, whereas no changes in 3.5% FCM and milk fat were observed.

Abstract
Twelve Holstein cows were used in a replicated Latin square experiment to determine the effect of adding dried molasses to high-alfalfa silage diets on dairy cow performance. Three isonitrogenous diets were formulated with a 68:32 forage:concentrate ratio, with alfalfa silage as the only forage source. Dietary treatments were a control diet with no added molasses and 3 and 6% dried molasses diets. Three lactating Holstein cows fitted with ruminal cannulas were used to determine the effects of dietary treatments on ruminal fermentation. Dietary treatments had no effect on dry matter (average 23.3 kg/d), crude protein (average 4.4 kg/d), or neutral detergent fiber (average 7.4 kg/d) intake. Milk yield, energy-corrected milk (average 35.4 kg/d), and 4% fat-corrected milk (average 33.8 kg/d) were not influenced by dietary treatments. Cows fed the control diet produced milk with less milk urea nitrogen concentration than those fed molasses-supplemented diets. Ruminal pH, NH3-N concentration, and total volatile fatty acids were not different among dietary treatments. The molar proportion of acetate linearly increased, whereas the molar proportion of propionate linearly decreased as the level of dried molasses increased. It was concluded that addition of dried molasses to high-alfalfa silage diets at 6% of the diet (dry matter basis) increased milk urea nitrogen but had no effect on animal performance.

Although sugars ferment faster than starch or fibre in the rumen, the rates of disaccharide hydrolysis and monosaccharide fermentation vary greatly depending on the type of sugar and rumen environment. Despite rapid fermentation in the rumen and their potential to provide greater fermentable energy to enhance microbial protein production, feeding sugars in place of dietary starch sources may not decrease rumen pH or improve N utilization efficiency and milk protein production in dairy cows. However, feeding high-sugar diets often increases dry matter intake, butyrate concentration in the rumen, and milk fat yield. These nutritional characteristics of sugars may allow us to use high-sugar feedstuffs as an alternative energy source for lactating dairy cows to increase dietary energy density with reduced risk of rumen acidosis, but there is little evidence in the literature to indicate that the synchrony of rumen fermentation would be enhanced by feeding high-sugar diets with high soluble protein. Greater butyrate production from feeding high-sugar diets is expected to enhance proliferation of gut tissues, but its physiological mechanisms and effects of butyrate metabolism on overall productivity of dairy cows warrant further investigations.

Avaliaram-se os efeitos da silagem de grãos úmidos de milho e da substituição parcial ou total de milho seco por polpa de citrus sobre a produção e a composição do leite de vacas mantidas em pastejo de capim-elefante, manejado intensivamente. Foram utilizadas 12 vacas da raça Holandesa, "de alta cruza" distribuídas em quatro tratamentos, em delineamento do tipo quadrado latino. Todas as vacas receberam concentrados que diferiram nas fontes de carboidratos: milho-grão seco moído, polpa de citrus mais milho grão seco moído, polpa de citrus e silagem de grãos úmidos de milho. Não foi detectada diferença (P>0,05) na produção de leite total, de leite corrigido para gordura (LCG 3,5) e para sólidos (LCS) entre tratamentos. Vacas que receberam milho-grão seco e silagem de milho de alta umidade apresentaram maior porcentagem de proteína e sólidos totais no leite (P<0,05), e as que receberam polpa de citrus, maior porcentagem de gordura (P<0,01). As que consumiram silagem de grãos úmidos apresentaram menor valor de nitrogênio ureico no leite (P<0,05). A ausência de resposta positiva ao processamento do milho pode ser razão do potencial de produção do sistema em pasto e do estresse calórico sofrido pelos animais. Em critérios de pagamento do leite em que a composição não tem valor econômico definido, qualquer uma das fontes de carboidratos testados no presente estudo pode ser utilizada.

Abstract
Thirty-eight lactating dairy cows including 6 ruminally cannulated cows were used in a feeding study to assess effects of feed sources that differed in dietary nonfiber carbohydrate (NFC) composition and ruminal degradability of dietary protein (RDP) on production, ruminal, and plasma measures. The design was a partially balanced, incomplete Latin square with three 21-d periods and a 3 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments. Samples and data were collected in the last 7 d of each period. Feed sources that differed in NFC profile were dry ground corn (GC; starch), dried citrus pulp (DCP; sugar and pectins), and sucrose+molasses (SM; sugar). Dietary RDP was altered by providing CP with soybean meal (+RDP) or substituting a heat-treated expeller soybean product for a portion of the soybean meal (-RDP). Diets were formulated to be isonitrogenous and similar in NFC concentration. Cows consuming GC had the greatest milk urea nitrogen and milk protein percentage and yield, tended to have the greatest dry matter intake, but had a lesser milk fat percentage compared with cows consuming DCP and SM. Sucrose+molasses diets supported greater dry matter intake, milk protein yield, and 3.5% fat- and protein-corrected milk yield than did DCP diets. On -RDP diets, milk protein percentage was less and milk urea nitrogen and protein yield tended to be less than for +RDP diets. Dry ground corn diverged from DCP and SM in the effect of NFC x RDP, with cows consuming GC having lesser milk yield, 3.5% fat- and protein-corrected milk yield, and efficiency with -RDP as compared with +RDP, whereas these production measures were greater with -RDP than +RDP for cows consuming DCP and SM. In contrast, in situ NDF digestibility at 30h for GC and SM was greater for -RDP as compared with +RDP, but the reverse was true for DCP. The lowest ruminal pH detected by 6h postfeeding was also influenced by the interaction of NFC x RDP, with cows consuming SM having a lower pH with +RDP than with -RDP and cows consuming DCP having a similar pH on either RDP treatment. Total rumen volatile fatty acid concentrations did not differ among diets, but acetate molar percent was greater for DCP than for SM, and GC had the lowest molar percent for butyrate and valerate and greatest branched-chain volatile fatty acid concentration. Valerate molar percent and NH(3) concentration tended to be greater with +RDP than with -RDP. Plasma glucose and insulin were both greater in cows receiving SM than in those receiving DCP. Protein degradability, NFC source, and their interactions affected lactation, ruminal, and blood measures, suggesting that these dietary factors warrant further consideration in diet formulation.

Abstract
Two studies were conducted to determine the effects of replacing lupins with fresh citrus pulp in Merino wethers diets: (i) an in vitro study, which measured ruminal fermentation; and (ii) an in vivo study in which 18 mature Merino wethers were fed dietary treatments (n = 3) over 56 days to evaluate effects on performance [i.e. DM intake, average daily gain and wool growth]. In both the in vitro and in vivo studies, the control treatment consisted (in diet DM) of lucerne chaff (69.9%), lupins (30.1%) and phosphate (0.3%), whereas the citrus pulp treatments (n = 2; replacing lupins on 20 and 30% DM basis, respectively) consisted of lucerne chaff (61.7 and 63.3%), lupins (18.5 and 6.3%), phosphate (0.34 and 0.33%) and fresh citrus pulp (19.5 and 30.1%). Data were analysed using the MIXED model of SAS and orthogonal polynomial contrasts were used to determine linear (L) and quadratic responses to the level of citrus pulp. In the in vitro study, gas production, net total volatile fatty acid production as well as in vitro DM digestibility were similar (P > 0.05) among the dietary treatments. Ammonia production in citrus pulp treatments were twofold lower compared with the control (L, P < 0.01). The addition of citrus pulp to the diet increased the molar proportions of acetic acid and decreased that of butyric, branched-chain volatile fatty acids, and valeric acids (all L, P < 0.01) compared with the control diet. In the in vivo study, DM intake, average daily gain and feed conversion were similar among treatments (P > 0.52). Wool production parameters including clean fleece weight, yield and staple length were not different between diets (P > 0.30). Hence, fresh citrus pulp can be included up to 30% on a DM basis replacing lupins without detrimental effects on wool production and animal performance.

Abstract
The objective of this experiment was to determine the effect of protein degradability of dairy sheep diets on milk yield and protein utilization across 2 levels of milk production. Three diets were formulated to provide similar energy concentrations and varying concentrations of rumen-degradable protein (RDP) and rumen-undegradable protein (RUP): 12% RDP and 4% RUP (12-4) included basal levels of RDP and RUP, 12% RDP and 6% RUP (12-6) included additional RUP, and 14% RDP and 4% RUP (14-4) included additional RDP. Diets were composed of alfalfa-timothy cubes, whole and ground corn, whole oats, dehulled soybean meal, and expeller soybean meal (SoyPlus, West Central, Ralston, IA). Estimates of RDP and RUP were based on the Small Ruminant Nutrition System model (2008) and feed and orts were analyzed for Cornell N fractions. Eighteen multiparous dairy ewes in midlactation were divided by milk yield (low and high) into 2 blocks of 9 ewes each and were randomly assigned within block (low and high) to 3 pens of 3 ewes each. Dietary treatments were arranged in a 3 x 3 Latin square within each block and applied to pens for 14-d periods. We hypothesized that pens consuming high-RUP diets (12-6) would produce more milk and milk protein than the basal diet (12-4) and pens consuming high-RDP diets (14-4) would not produce more milk than the basal diet (12-4). Ewes in the high-milk-yield square consumed more dry matter and produced more milk, milk fat, and milk protein than ewes in the low-milk-yield square. There was no effect of dietary treatment on dry matter intake. Across both levels of milk production, the 12-6 diet increased milk yield by 14%, increased milk fat yield by 14%, and increased milk protein yield by 13% compared with the 14-4 and 12-4 diets. Gross N efficiency (milk protein N/intake protein N) was 11 and 15% greater in the 12-6 and 12-4 diets, respectively, compared with the 14-4 diet. Milk urea N concentration was greater in the 12-6 diet and tended to be greater in the 14-4 diet compared with the 12-4 diet, indicating that the excretion of urea N in this study was more closely related to dietary crude protein concentration than to protein degradability.

Abstract
Avaliaram-se o desempenho e a eficiência financeira de vacas leiteiras alimentadas com dietas com substituição total de milho por polpa cítrica. O teor dietético do milho foi 10% e o de polpa 24% nos tratamentos com milho, e o de polpa foi 33% nas dietas exclusivas com polpa. A substituição total das fontes inorgânicas Cu, Mn, Se, Zn e Cr por fontes orgânicas foi avaliada simultaneamente. As quatro dietas geradas por arranjo fatorial dos dois fatores foram fornecidas a 16 vacas em Quadrado Latino 4x4. As produções de leite foram 27,5kg para vacas alimentadas com polpa e 28,4kg para aquelas que receberam milho (P=0,04). A substituição total de milho por polpa cítrica reduziu o teor e a produção de proteína no leite (P<0,03), e não afetou a secreção de gordura (P>0,24). Dietas formuladas exclusivamente com polpa cítrica podem ser indicadas quando o pagamento do leite for baseado apenas no volume. A inclusão de milho pode aumentar a renda bruta subtraída do custo alimentar quando a produção de sólidos for valorizada.

Simultaneamente, foi avaliada a substituição total de fontes inorgânicas de Cu, Mn, Se, Zn e Cr por fontes orgânicas. Quatro dietas baseadas em silagem de milho foram geradas por arranjo fatorial dos dois fatores. Dezesseis vacas receberam os tratamentos em quadrado latino 4x4. O efeito da substituição de fontes inorgânicas por fontes orgânicas de microminerais não foi conclusivo. O consumo diário de matéria seca foi 19,4kg na polpa e 20,5kg na dieta com milho (P=0,03). O consumo de matéria orgânica digestível foi maior nas dietas com milho (P<0,01). Houve tendência de queda na taxa fracional de degradação ruminal in situ da MS da silagem de milho (P=0,11) e de aumento no tamanho da fração indigestível (P=0,15) nas dietas com milho, sugerindo que a degradação de forragens não determinou o menor consumo nas dietas com polpa. A substituição total de milho por polpa cítrica pode reduzir o consumo e a digestibilidade.

Abstract
Milk from forage (MF) is an estimation of the milk produced solely from forage intake. It is calculated by subtracting milk production theoretically allowed by concentrates from total milk production, assuming that maintenance requirements are covered by the forage portion of the diet. Eight multiparous Holstein cows in early lactation were used in a replicated 4 x 4 Latin square design to evaluate the impact on MF of different sources of carbohydrate with forage that was high in RDP. Diets were alfalfa-based total mixed rations that were formulated to provide similar concentrations of NEL and CP while differing in rumen degradability of concentrate carbohydrates. Treatments were 1) cracked corn (control), 2) ground corn (GC), 3) GC plus wheat starch (GC+S), and 4) GC plus dried whey permeate (GC+W). The GC and the GC+S treatments increased MF as calculated on a protein basis (14.8 vs. 10.5 kg) and increased average MF production (8.6 vs. 5.5 kg) compared with the control. Protein of forage was used more efficiently with GC and with GC+S, as shown by the lower differences between allowable MF, which estimates the potential for milk production from forage, and MF on a protein basis for these 2 treatments when compared with the control. Compared with the control, DMI increased with GC and GC+S; GC+W yielded the highest DMI. Milk production with GC+W (35.8 kg/d) was lower than with GC and GC+S (37.5 kg/d) but was higher than the control (34.0 kg/d). Milk fat concentration was higher with GC+W and lower with GC+S; GC and the control had intermediate values. Milk urea was higher with the control diet compared with the other 3 treatments. Results emphasize the advantage of using concentrates of higher degradability in the rumen to improve MF and milk production when feeding silage with high rumen-degradable protein.

Abstract
Eight Holstein cows (4 primiparous and 4 multiparous) were used in a replicated 4 x 4 Latin square design to determine milk production response and N balance when diets had no NRC-predicted excess of rumen-undegradable protein (RUP) or rumen-degradable protein (RDP), 10% RUP excess, 10% RDP excess, or 10% excess of both RUP and RDP. Diets were fed as a total mixed ration with (dry matter basis) 25% alfalfa silage, 25% corn silage, 19 to 21% corn grain, and varying proportions of solvent soybean meal and expeller soybean meal as primary sources of supplemental RDP and RUP, respectively. Milk yield and dry matter intake (DMI) were recorded daily, and total collection of feces and urine was completed in the last 3 d of each 21-d period. Dietary crude protein averaged 17.5 and 18.5% for the recommended and excess RDP diets, respectively, and 17.3 and 18.4% for the recommended and excess RUP diets, respectively. When cows were fed excess RUP diets in the form of expeller soybean meal, DMI and milk production increased, but the opposite was true when the diets contained excess RDP in the form of solvent soybean meal. Milk composition was not affected by RDP, RUP, or by parity, and there were no parity x RDP interactions for any of the measurements. However, apparent digestibility of neutral detergent fiber, dry matter, and N increased in multiparous cows but not in primiparous cows because of excess RUP. The increase in the yield of milk N with excess RUP was not influenced by parity, but multiparous cows retained more of the additional N apparently absorbed, whereas primiparous cows excreted the additional apparently absorbed N in the urine. Overall, the difference in urinary N due to parity (70 g/d) was about 4 times greater than the impact of dietary treatments (17 g/d). Our results suggest that multiparous cows have either a much larger urea pool or a greater demand to restore body protein mobilized earlier in lactation compared with primiparous cows. Reduction in urinary N excretion in commercial dairy herds could be obtained by separately balancing rations for first and later lactations.

Abstract
Twenty-five (10 ruminally cannulated) Holstein cows averaging 82 +/- 34 d in milk were assigned to 5 x 5 Latin squares (21-d periods) and fed diets supplemented with one of four different proteins to assess effects on production, ruminal metabolism, omasal flow of N fractions, and degradation rates of protein supplements. Total mixed diets contained (dry matter basis) 44% corn silage, 22% alfalfa silage, 2% urea, and 31% concentrate. Five concentrate mixes were fed: 31% high-moisture shelled corn (HMSC; basal); 9% solvent soybean meal (SSBM), 22% HMSC; 10% expeller soybean meal (ESBM), 21% HMSC; 5.5% blood meal (BM), 25.5% HMSC; and 7% corn gluten meal (CGM), 24% HMSC. Diets averaged, respectively, 15.8, 19.1, 19.7, 20.3, and 19.3% crude protein. Feeding the basal diet reduced intake and yield of milk, fat-corrected milk (FCM), and all milk components compared to the protein-supplemented diets. Milk yield was higher for cows fed ESBM and CGM, fat yield was higher for cows fed SSBM and CGM, but FCM and protein yields were not different among cows fed supplemental protein. Based on omasal sampling, mean in vivo estimates of ruminal degradation rate for the crude protein in SSBM, ESBM, BM, and CGM was, respectively, 0.417, 0.179, 0.098, and 0.051/h (computed using passage rates observed for the small particle phase; mean = 0.14/h), and 0.179, 0.077, 0.042, and 0.026/h (computed using a passage rate of 0.06/h). The in vivo degradation rate computed for SSBM at a passage rate = 0.06/h was similar to that estimated using the inhibitor in vitro method. However, in vivo degradation rates computed at passage rate = 0.06/h for ESBM, BM, and CGM were about two, four, and three times more rapid than those estimated by inhibitor in vitro. Experimental proteins fed in this trial will be used as standards for developing in vitro methods for predicting rates of ruminal protein degradation.
