Central nervous system vascular malformations: A clinical review

CNS vascular malformation is an umbrella term that encompasses a wide variety of pathologies, with a wide range of therapeutic and diagnostic importance. This range spans lesions with a risk of devastating neurological compromise to lesions with a slow, static or benign course. Advances in neurovascular imaging along with increased utilization of these advances, have resulted in more frequent identification of these lesions. In this article, we provide an overview on definitions and classifications of CNS vascular malformations and outline the etiologic, diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic features for each entity. This review covers intracranial and spinal cord vascular malformations and discusses syndromes associated with CNS vascular malformations.

Imaging patterns of venous-related brain injury in children

Venous-related brain injury is a common form of cerebrovascular injury in children and encompasses a diverse group of cerebrovascular diagnoses. The purpose of this pictorial essay is to introduce the relevant anatomy, pathophysiology and various imaging patterns of venous-related cerebral injury in children. Unifying concepts to better understand the effects of venous hypertension in the developing brain will be emphasized. These unifying concepts will provide the imaging professional with a conceptual framework to better understand and confidently identify imaging patterns of venous-related cerebral injury.

Vein of Galen malformations: epidemiology, clinical presentations, management

The vein of Galen aneurysmal malformation is a congenital vascular malformation that comprises 30% of the pediatric vascular and 1% of all pediatric congenital anomalies. Treatment is dependent on the timing of presentation and clinical manifestations. With the development of endovascular techniques, treatment paradigms have changed and clinical outcomes have significantly improved. In this article, the developmental embryology, clinical features and pathophysiology, diagnostic workup, and management strategies are reviewed.
