Texture based feature extraction using symbol patterns for facial expression recognition

Facial expressions can convey the internal emotions of a person within a certain scenario and play a major role in the social interaction of human beings. In automatic Facial Expression Recognition (FER) systems, the method applied for feature extraction plays a major role in determining the performance of a system. In this regard, by drawing inspiration from the Swastik symbol, three texture based feature descriptors named Symbol Patterns (SP1, SP2 and SP3) have been proposed for facial feature extraction. SP1 generates one pattern value by comparing eight pixels within a 3× 3 neighborhood, whereas, SP2 and SP3 generates two pattern values each by comparing twelve and sixteen pixels within a 5× 5 neighborhood respectively. In this work, the proposed Symbol Patterns (SP) have been evaluated with natural, fibonacci, odd, prime, squares and binary weights for determining the optimal recognition accuracy. The proposed SP methods have been tested on MUG, TFEID, CK+, KDEF, FER2013 and FERG datasets and the results from the experimental analysis demonstrated an improvement in the recognition accuracy when compared to the existing FER methods.

Sentiment Analysis of before and after Elections: Twitter Data of U.S. Election 2020

U.S. President Joe Biden took his oath after being victorious in the controversial U.S. elections of 2020. The polls were conducted over postal ballot due to the coronavirus pandemic following delays of the announcement of the election’s results. Donald J. Trump claimed that there was potential rigging against him and refused to accept the results of the polls. The sentiment analysis captures the opinions of the masses over social media for global events. In this work, we analyzed Twitter sentiment to determine public views before, during, and after elections and compared them with actual election results. We also compared opinions from the 2016 election in which Donald J. Trump was victorious with the 2020 election. We created a dataset using tweets’ API, pre-processed the data, extracted the right features using TF-IDF, and applied the Naive Bayes Classifier to obtain public opinions. As a result, we identified outliers, analyzed controversial and swing states, and cross-validated election results against sentiments expressed over social media. The results reveal that the election outcomes coincide with the sentiment expressed on social media in most cases. The pre and post-election sentiment analysis results demonstrate the sentimental drift in outliers. Our sentiment classifier shows an accuracy of 94.58% and a precision of 93.19%.

Authentication through gender classification from iris images using support vector machine

Soft biometric information, such as gender, iris, and voice, can be helpful in various applications, such as security, authentication, and validation. Iris is secure biometrics with low forgery and error rates due to its highly certain features are being used in the last few decades. Iris recognition could be used both independently and in part for secure recognition and authentication systems. Existing iris-based gender classification techniques have low accuracy rates as well as high computational complexity. Accordingly, this paper presents an authentication approach through gender classification from iris images using support vector machine (SVM) that has an excellent response to sustained changes using the Zernike, Legendre invariant moments, and Gradient-oriented histogram. In this study, invariant moments are used as feature extraction from iris images. After extracting these descriptors' attributes, the attributes are categorized through keycode fusion. SVM is employed for gender classification using a fused feature vector. The proposed approach is evaluated on the CVBL data set and results are compared in state of the art based on local binary patterns and Gabor filters. The proposed approach came out with 98% gender classification rate with low computational complexity that could be used as an authentication measure.
