Revolutionizing tumor detection and classification in multimodality imaging based on deep learning approaches: Methods, applications and limitations

BACKGROUND

The emergence of deep learning (DL) techniques has revolutionized tumor detection and classification in medical imaging, with multimodal medical imaging (MMI) gaining recognition for its precision in diagnosis, treatment, and progression tracking.

OBJECTIVE

This review comprehensively examines DL methods in transforming tumor detection and classification across MMI modalities, aiming to provide insights into advancements, limitations, and key challenges for further progress.

METHODS

Systematic literature analysis identifies DL studies for tumor detection and classification, outlining methodologies including convolutional neural networks (CNNs), recurrent neural networks (RNNs), and their variants. Integration of multimodality imaging enhances accuracy and robustness.

RESULTS

Recent advancements in DL-based MMI evaluation methods are surveyed, focusing on tumor detection and classification tasks. Various DL approaches, including CNNs, YOLO, Siamese Networks, Fusion-Based Models, Attention-Based Models, and Generative Adversarial Networks, are discussed with emphasis on PET-MRI, PET-CT, and SPECT-CT.

FUTURE DIRECTIONS

The review outlines emerging trends and future directions in DL-based tumor analysis, aiming to guide researchers and clinicians toward more effective diagnosis and prognosis. Continued innovation and collaboration are stressed in this rapidly evolving domain.

CONCLUSION

Conclusions drawn from literature analysis underscore the efficacy of DL approaches in tumor detection and classification, highlighting their potential to address challenges in MMI analysis and their implications for clinical practice.

Deep learning based unpaired image-to-image translation applications for medical physics: a systematic review

Purpose. There is a growing number of publications on the application of unpaired image-to-image (I2I) translation in medical imaging. However, a systematic review covering the current state of this topic for medical physicists is lacking. The aim of this article is to provide a comprehensive review of current challenges and opportunities for medical physicists and engineers to apply I2I translation in practice.Methods and materials. The PubMed electronic database was searched using terms referring to unpaired (unsupervised), I2I translation, and medical imaging. This review has been reported in compliance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. From each full-text article, we extracted information extracted regarding technical and clinical applications of methods, Transparent Reporting for Individual Prognosis Or Diagnosis (TRIPOD) study type, performance of algorithm and accessibility of source code and pre-trained models.Results. Among 461 unique records, 55 full-text articles were included in the review. The major technical applications described in the selected literature are segmentation (26 studies), unpaired domain adaptation (18 studies), and denoising (8 studies). In terms of clinical applications, unpaired I2I translation has been used for automatic contouring of regions of interest in MRI, CT, x-ray and ultrasound images, fast MRI or low dose CT imaging, CT or MRI only based radiotherapy planning, etc Only 5 studies validated their models using an independent test set and none were externally validated by independent researchers. Finally, 12 articles published their source code and only one study published their pre-trained models.Conclusion. I2I translation of medical images offers a range of valuable applications for medical physicists. However, the scarcity of external validation studies of I2I models and the shortage of publicly available pre-trained models limits the immediate applicability of the proposed methods in practice.

A coronary artery CTA segmentation approach based on deep learning

Presence of plaque and coronary artery stenosis are the main causes of coronary heart disease. Detection of plaque and coronary artery segmentation have become the first choice in detecting coronary artery disease. The purpose of this study is to investigate a new method for plaque detection and automatic segmentation and diagnosis of coronary arteries and to test its feasibility of applying to clinical medical image diagnosis. A multi-model fusion coronary CT angiography (CTA) vessel segmentation method is proposed based on deep learning. The method includes three network layer models namely, an original 3-dimensional full convolutional network (3D FCN) and two networks that embed the attention gating (AG) model in the original 3D FCN. Then, the prediction results of the three networks are merged by using the majority voting algorithm and thus the final prediction result of the networks is obtained. In the post-processing stage, the level set function is used to further iteratively optimize the results of network fusion prediction. The JI (Jaccard index) and DSC (Dice similarity coefficient) scores are calculated to evaluate accuracy of blood vessel segmentations. Applying to a CTA dataset of 20 patients, accuracy of coronary blood vessel segmentation using FCN, FCN-AG1, FCN-AG2 network and the fusion method are tested. The average values of JI and DSC of using the first three networks are (0.7962, 0.8843), (0.8154, 0.8966) and (0.8119, 0.8936), respectively. When using new fusion method, average JI and DSC of segmentation results increase to (0.8214, 0.9005), which are better than the best result of using FCN, FCN-AG1 and FCN-AG2 model independently.
