Abstract
The presence of translucent eggshells is a type of egg quality issue that impacts egg sales. While many researchers have studied them, the exact mechanisms behind their formation remain unclear. In this study, we conducted a transcriptomic differential expression analysis of the isthmus region of the oviduct in both normal egg- and translucent egg-laying hens. The analysis revealed that differentially expressed gene pathways were predominantly concentrated in the synthesis, modification, and transport of eggshell membrane proteins, particularly collagen proteins, which provide structural support. These findings suggest that variations in the physical structure of the eggshell membrane, resulting from changes in its chemical composition, are the fundamental cause of translucent eggshell formation. This research provides a theoretical reference for reducing the occurrence of translucent eggs.

Abstract
Eggshell quality is among the most important factors affecting hatchability in broiler breeders, and therefore several methods for its assessment are available in the poultry industry. Among them, eggshell translucency has received special attention in recent years due to its connection with ultrastructural disorganization of the shell layers. However, there is very limited data on the impact of translucency on hatching eggs and on the possible links between this trait and specific gravity (SG) or shell color. Thus, our study investigated associations and interactions between eggshell translucency, SG, and color on incubation parameters of eggs from the same breeding flock (Ross 308AP, 51 wk of age). To this end, light and dark eggs within 5 different SG categories (≥1.065, 1.070, 1.075, 1.080, and ≤1.085) were selected from 15,976 eggs, graded into 3 translucency scores, and later incubated to evaluate egg weight loss, hatchability and embryonic mortalities. In general, translucency scores were evenly distributed within SG categories (χ2 [8, N = 1,138] = 13.67, P = 0.090) and color (χ2 [2, N = 1,138] = 4.93, P = 0.084). No interactions between eggshell translucency and SG or between translucency and color were found for the analyzed variables. An interaction was observed between SG and eggshell color for the variable egg weight loss, where the light-shelled eggs, in most SG categories lost more weight throughout incubation than dark eggs. Eggshell translucency affected egg weight loss, hatchability, and embryonic mortality on 11 to 18 d of incubation, with highly translucent eggs showing the worst results. At the same time, eggs with SG lower than 1.070 displayed the greatest weight loss, lowest hatchability, and highest contamination. We found no influence of eggshell color on weight loss or hatchability, but light-shelled eggs exhibited higher late embryonic mortality. Together, these data suggest that despite its effects on certain hatching parameters, shell translucency bears no relationship to SG or color.

Abstract
Eggshell translucency, an externally observable feature, can influence consumer purchase intentions. The eggshell quality often deteriorates in aging laying hens, leading to increased eggshell translucency. Eggs exchange water vapor through the pores. It is commonly believed that the moisture remaining in the mastoid space contributes to translucent egg formation. However, the precise mechanisms underlying eggshell translucency require further structural investigations. This study aimed to explore the 3-dimensional microstructure of eggshells using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) to provide insights into the microstructural basis of eggshell translucency. The results revealed that the ratio of pore volume to mastoid space volume was significantly higher in the high-translucency (TH) group than that in the low-translucency (TL) group (P < 0.01); however, the ratio of mastoid space to eggshell volume showed no significant difference. Additionally, measurements of the individual pore morphological features showed that the roundness of the pores in the TH group was significantly higher than that in the TL group, whereas the flatness of the pores in the TH group was significantly lower (P = 0.01). Eggshell porosity directly reflects the water vapor exchange capacity of eggshells, with the TL group exhibiting significantly higher eggshell porosity compared to the TH group (P = 0.02). In conclusion, based on observations of the 3-dimensional microstructure of eggshells, this study elucidated how the volume and morphological characteristics of pores influence the water vapor exchange capacity of eggshells, resulting in eggshell translucency.

Abstract
A successful hatch has a considerable economic impact on all poultry companies. The aim of the current study was to describe the possible effects of shell translucency (T score) and coloration lightness (L* value) on shell thickness, hatchability, and chick weight. A total of 4,320 eggs from 4 commercial Ross 708 breeder flocks (50-55-wk old) were used. Eggs were selected for T score and L* value. A 3-point subjective scoring system was used for T score (1 = low, 2 = medium, 3 = high), and an electronic colorimeter for L* value, sorting the eggs as light (avg. L* = 80.7) or dark (avg. L* = 76.0). Data were analyzed using the GLIMMIX procedure of SAS (V9.4) and Tukey's HSD test was performed to separate means, a significant difference was considered when P ≤ 0.05. Results suggest that the color of the eggshell was related to the egg weight on the day of collection (P = 0.0056) and at transfer (P = 0.0211), in both cases dark eggs were 0.6 g heavier than light eggs. Dark eggs had a 3.8% increased hatchability of egg set (P = 0.0481) and yielded 6 µm thicker shells (P = 0.0019) when compared to light eggs. Regarding translucency, egg weight at transfer was 0.8 g heavier for T score 1 eggs compared to T score 3 (P = 0.0358). The translucency score of 1 had a 6.9% higher hatchability of eggs set (P = 0.0127) and 0.7 g heavier chick weight (P = 0.0385) compared to T score 3. However, T score 1 eggs had shells 28 µm thinner than the T score 2 and 34 µm thinner than T score 3 (P < 0.0001). An interaction effect was observed for eggshell thickness, L* value, and T score, where eggs classified as light with T score 1 had thinner eggshells compared to those that were dark with T score 3 (P = 0.0292). These results suggest that eggshell translucency and coloration lightness can be good noninvasive indicators of eggshell thickness, hatchability, and chick weight in broiler breeder flocks.

Abstract
Translucent egg consumption is low due to consumer acceptance and quality concerns, which is a problem that egg producers need to address. This study was performed to evaluate the reasons for the high occurrence of egg translucency in summer, as well as whether the addition of mono-dicalcium phosphate (MDCP) to the diet can relieve eggshell translucency and whether eggshell translucency is associated with the risk of bacterial invasion. A total of 72 laying hens that were 36 weeks old were randomly divided into control (CON) and MDCP groups and fed in the same environment. Results showed that the number of translucent eggs increases in July and August as the temperature and humidity increase. Compared with the CON group, in July, August, and October, the translucent egg grade (TEG) of the MDCP group was lower than that of the CON group (p < 0.05). TEG was correlated with mastoid space height (MSH), width (MSW), and area (MSA) (correlation coefficients 0.63, 0.59, and 0.68, respectively, p ≤ 0.05). There was no significant difference in the invasion rate of E. coli between translucent and non-translucent egg groups (47.2% vs. 39.33%), and translucent area and non-translucent area (13.49% vs. 15.08%). In conclusion, our results show that dietary MDCP may alleviate eggshell translucency and that eggshell translucency would not increase the probability of E. coli cross-shell penetration rate.

Abstract
Eggshell translucency severely affects external egg quality, and variations in the eggshell or eggshell membrane are considered the structural basis of the trait. Research has shown that 1.85% additional mixed fatty acids in the diet would greatly decrease the occurrence of eggshell translucency. Only a few studies have examined the phenotypic regularity of eggshell translucency with the increasing age of hens. Therefore, two strains, 1139 Rhode Island Red-White (RIR-White) and 836 Dwarf Layer-White (DWL-White), were used, and from each strain, 30 hens each that consecutively laid translucent or opaque eggs at 67 wks of age were selected. Subsequently, eggshell translucency, internal quality and external quality of eggs, and total cholesterol, albumin, calcium binding protein and other physiological indicators related to lipid, lipoprotein, and calcium metabolisms at the 75th, 79th, and 83rd wks of age in the late phase of the laying cycle were determined. Results: (1) In terms of flocks, for both strains, the translucency scores of the translucent groups were significantly higher than those of the opaque groups (P < 0.05); in terms of individuals, 81.1% RIR-White and 82.8% DWL-White hens consecutively laid eggs of the same or similar translucency, indicating the stability of the trait with increasing hen age; (2) In RIR-White, the eggshell strength of the translucent group at 75 weeks was significantly higher than that of the opaque group (P < 0.05); in DWL-White, the eggshell membrane thickness of the translucent group at the 75th and 83rd weeks was significantly lower than that of the opaque group (P < 0.05); (3) Compared to the opaque groups, the translucent groups had lower total cholesterol content in both RIR-White and DWL-White, lower albumin content in DWL-White at the 79th weeks (P < 0.05), and higher calcium-binding protein (CALB1) in RIR-White at the 83rd weeks (P < 0.05). In summary, this study illustrates the stability of eggshell translucency in late-phase laying hens and provides a reference of physiological indicators for exploring the formation of translucent eggs.

Abstract
Internal egg and eggshell quality are often deteriorated in aging laying hens, which causes huge economic losses in the poultry industry. Selenium yeast (SY), as an organic food additive, is utilized to enhance laying performance and egg quality. To extend the egg production cycle, effects of selenium yeast supplementation on egg quality, plasma antioxidants and selenium deposition in aged laying hens were evaluated. In this study, five hundred and twenty-five 76-week-old Jing Hong laying hens were fed a selenium-deficient (SD) diet for 6 weeks. After Se depletion, the hens were randomly divided into seven treatments, which included an SD diet, and dietary supplementation of SY and sodium selenite (SS) at 0.15, 0.30, and 0.45 mg/kg to investigate the effect on egg quality, plasma antioxidant capacity, and selenium content in reproductive organs. After 12 weeks of feeding, dietary SY supplementation resulted in higher eggshell strength (SY0.45) (p < 0.05) and lower shell translucence. Moreover, organs Se levels and plasma antioxidant capacity (T-AOC, T-SOD, and GSH-Px activity) were significantly higher with Se supplementation (p < 0.05). Transcriptomic analysis identified some key candidate genes including cell migration inducing hyaluronidase 1 (CEMIP), ovalbumin (OVAL), solute carrier family 6 member 17 (SLC6A17), proopiomelanocortin (POMC), and proenkephalin (PENK), and potential molecular processes (eggshell mineralization, ion transport, and eggshell formation) involved in selenium yeast's effects on eggshell formation. In conclusion, SY has beneficial functions for eggshell and we recommend the supplementation of 0.45 mg/kg SY to alleviate the decrease in eggshell quality in aged laying hens.

Abstract
The translucency of eggshells is a ubiquitous appearance problem caused by moisture translocation and the accumulation of egg contents into the eggshell ultrastructure. Previous studies have mainly investigated the causes of eggshell translucency from nutritional and environmental perspectives. However, little is known of the effect of genetics the causes of eggshell translucency on hen production performance. To evaluate the genetic parameters of eggshell translucency and other production performance indicators, we performed an experiment on 3 pure hen lines: 624 Dwarf Layer-White, 1,612 Rhode Island Red, and 813 Rhode Island Red-White. We collected eggs from each hen over 5 d and measured eggshell translucent level (TL) using the grading method. Additionally we measured indicators of each hen during the laying period, including age at laying of the first egg (AFE), body weight at laying of the first egg (BWFE), weight of the first egg (FEW), body weight at 40 wk (BW40), egg weight at 40 wk (EW40), egg production up to 40 wk of age (EN), and calculated the genetic parameters among the indicators. The results showed that the estimated heritability of TL in the 3 genotypes were 0.30, 0.24, and 0.20, respectively, suggesting a low or moderate level of heritability. We found a positive correlation between TL and AFE, with genetic correlation coefficients 0.19 to 0.41, and negative genetic correlation between TL and EN, with correlation coefficient -0.36 to -0.19. Additionally, we observed positive correlation exists between AFE and FEW, BWFE and FEW, and BW40 and EW40; and negative correlation between AFE and EN in the 3 pure lines. These results enriched the research on heritability of eggshell translucency in different hen breeds and demonstrated moderate or low heritability of the indicator. Furthermore, eggshell translucency was negatively affected by AFE and EN. Our results provide a valuable reference for predicting selection response of eggshell translucency and production performance in brood hens, and locating the genes regulating eggshell translucency.

Abstract
In 2 experiments, interactions between trace mineral (Zn, Mn, Cu, Se) source (organic or inorganic) in the broiler breeder diet and egg translucency (high or low) on egg characteristics and embryonic development were investigated. In the first experiment, eggs from old breeders (55-57 wk) and in the second experiment, eggs from prime breeders (34-36 wk) were used. Egg composition and bacterial load on the eggshell were analyzed in fresh eggs. During incubation, metabolic heat production of the embryos (d 8 (E8) to 19 of incubation) and tibia ossification (E8.5-E14.5) were determined daily. At hatch, chicken quality was assessed, including tibia biophysical characteristic. Egg quality was not affected by breeder trace minerals source or egg translucency in both experiments. In both experiments, an interaction between trace minerals source and translucency score was found for egg weight loss during incubation. In inorganic trace minerals fed breeders, a high egg translucency resulted in a higher egg weight loss than a low egg translucency, whereas this difference was not seen in organic trace minerals fed breeders. Embryonic heat production and tibia ossification were not affected by trace minerals source or egg translucency. Chicken quality showed ambiguous results between experiment 1 and 2 regarding trace minerals source in the breeder diet. In experiment 2, high translucent eggs from organic fed breeders hatched later than eggs from the other three treatment groups and additionally, high egg translucency resulted in lower residual yolk weight and higher heart and liver percentage of YFBM compared to low egg translucency. Tibia biophysical characteristics at hatch were not affected by trace minerals source or egg translucency. It can be concluded that organic trace minerals source in broiler breeder diet affects eggshell conductance, particularly in low translucent eggs, but effects on chicken quality and tibia characteristics appears to be limited.

Abstract
The eggshell quality declined with extending of chicken laying cycles. Eggshell quality is a crucial feature that not only affects consumer preference, but also influences producers' economic profitability. The eggshell ultrastructure consists of mammillary, palisade, and vertical crystal layers. Any defect in shell structure results in a reduction in eggshell quality. Speckled, translucent, pimpled, and soft eggshells are common defects that cause significant financial losses for farmers and food security concerns for consumers. Therefore, reducing the faulty eggshells is critical for poultry production. Defective eggshell quality has been attributed to hereditary factors and external environmental stimuli. As such, improvements can be carried out through selective breeding and environmental control of components such as temperature, moisture, and diet formula balance. In this review, the molecular mechanisms of the main eggshell quality defects (speckled, translucent, pimpled, broken, and soft-shell eggs) and the relevant improvement methods are detailed. We hope this review will serve as a useful resource for poultry production management and effectively increasing eggshell quality.

Abstract
Eggshell translucency is a ubiquitous external eggshell quality problem caused by variations of eggshell ultrastructure or shell membrane. In previous studies, researchers have widely investigated this phenomenon with nutritional, environmental, and genetic perspectives in many breeds. However, most studies referring to phenotypic measurement of shell translucency have been performed using a relatively subjective two-, three-, or four-grading methods, which made it impossible to compare distribution of shell translucency among different breeds. In this study, we aimed to explore variations of translucent eggshell spots in different breeds and their distribution in blunt, middle, and sharp ends of eggshell using a relatively objective grayscale recognition method. We selected 45 eggs from each flock of pure lines, commercial strains, and Chinese local breeds (10 flocks, aged 60 to 70 wk), and stored them in a constant environment for 5 d. Then measured eggshell translucency using grayscale recognition method. Indicators of shell translucency included sum of spot areas on the whole eggshell (SUSA), sum area of the whole eggshell (SUSHA), RSS (ratio of SUSA to SUSHA), quantity of spots (QS), average spot area in eggshell (AAES), and diameter of spots in eggshell (DS). As results, in Hy-Line Brown, Brown-Egg Dwarf Layer, and Taihang (pink-shelled) breeds, phenotypic intensity of eggshell translucency was slight; in Rhode Island Red, Jingfen-1, and Dongxiang breeds, phenotypic intensity of eggshell translucency was relatively extensive; and in Jinghong-1, Hy-Line Sonia, White Leghorn, and Taihang (blue-shelled), phenotypic intensity of eggshell translucency was at an intermediate level. In general, the larger the RSS, the larger the QS, AAES, and DS. Of 3 ends for most breeds, eggshell translucency of blunt and sharp ends was usually greater than that of middle ends, and blunt ends seemed to have the most extensive eggshell translucency. Findings from this study could provide a reference for population selection to locate genes regulating shell translucency and to explore the physical structure mechanism for eggshell translucency formation.

Abstract
Scoring is a common method to evaluate eggshell translucency, and it mainly depends on the area and the density of translucent spots in eggshells. However, the lack of common scoring criteria and the difficulty of quantitatively measuring spots in eggshells impede effective comparisons between research papers and greatly hinder the progress of research on translucent eggshell. To make measurement of translucent eggshells more objective, we optimized the scoring method and compared it with 2 new methods: grayscale recognition and the colorimeter method. Briefly, a total of 354 eggs from 600, 395-day-old dwarf brown laying hens were collected and classified into 4 score groups according to their degree of translucency. This subjective process was repeated 5 times. Then, we captured the profile side of each egg using a camera and measured spot characteristics using grayscale recognition, which involved measuring the quantity of spots (QS), diameter of each spot (DS), average area of each spot (AAES), sum of spot areas (SUSA), sum of shell area (SUSHA), and ratio of SUSA to SUSHA (RSS) on the eggshell. Furthermore, the L, A, and B values of each egg at the sharp, middle, and blunt ends were separately measured using a colorimeter. As a result, average values of 31.31, 29.78, 29.81, and 9.08% of all eggs were divided into score levels 1, 2, 3, and 4 (from opaque to translucent), which correspond with RSS values of 1.34, 3.23, 6.21, and 11.89%, respectively. By grayscale recognition, QS, DS, AAES, SUSA, SUSHA, and RSS all increased along with increased translucency scores (P < 0.05). Using scoring, an egg with a specific RSS value was more easily assigned to a specific score level (50%) or adjacent score levels (50%). The L, A, and B values of eggshells in score level 1 were significantly different from those of eggshells in levels 3 or 4; however, there were no significant differences between any adjacent score levels. In summary, the present study explored objective reference metrics to measure eggshell translucency.

Abstract
PURPOSE Cerebrospinal fluid leakage is always the primary complication during the endoscopic endonasal skull base surgery. Dural suturing technique may supply a rescue method. However, suturing and knotting in such a deep and narrow space are difficult. Training in the model can improve skills and setting a stepwise curriculum can increase trainers' interest and confidence. METHODS We constructed an easy model using silicone and acrylic as sphenoid sinus and using the egg-shell membrane as skull base dura. The training is divided into three steps: Step 1: extracorporeal knot-tying suture on the silicone of sphenoid sinus, Step 2: intra-nasal knot-tying suture on the same silicone, and Step 3: intra-nasal egg-shell membrane knot-tying suture. Fifteen experienced microneurosurgical neurosurgeons (Group A) and ten inexperienced PGY residents (Group B) were recruited to perform the tasks. Performance measures were time, suturing and knotting errors, and needle and thread manipulations. The third step was assessed through the injection of full water into the other side of the egg to verify the watertight suture. The results were compared between two groups. RESULTS Group A finishes the first and second tasks in significantly less time (total time, 125.1 ± 10.8 vs 195.8 ± 15.9 min) and fewer error points (2.4 ± 1.3 vs 5.3 ± 1.0) than group B. There are five trainers in group A who passed the third step, this number in group B was only one. CONCLUSIONS This low cost and stepwise training model improved the suture and knot skills for skull base repair during endoscopic endonasal surgery. Experienced microneurosurgical neurosurgeons perform this technique more competent.
