Abstract
Global egg production is mainly based on cage systems, which have been associated with negative effects on the welfare of birds. Stress factors in restrictive production systems can lead to changes in gene transcription and protein synthesis, ultimately impacting the quality of poultry products. The liver serves various metabolic functions, such as glycogen storage, and plays a crucial role in animals' adaptation to environmental changes. Consequently, both internal and external conditions can influence liver functions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the gene expression of AGP, CRP, NOX4, SOD1, CAT, GPX1, SREBF1, and FXR in the liver of laying hens under two different production systems. Liver tissues from Hy-Line Brown hens housed in conventional cage and cage-free egg production systems at 60 and 80 weeks of production were used. mRNA transcript levels were determined by qPCR using the relative quantification method and ACTB as the reference gene. AGP, SOD1, and SREBF1 gene expressions were significantly higher in the conventional cage group at the 60 weeks of production. Furthermore, the mRNA levels of transcripts related to oxidative stress and lipid metabolism were higher in the group of laying hens housed in conventional cages compared to those in cage-free systems. These results suggest differential gene expression of genes related to oxidative stress in liver tissues from hens housed in conventional cages compared to cage-free systems. The conditions of the egg production system can impact the gene expression of oxidative stress and lipid synthesis genes, potentially leading to changes in the metabolism and performance of hens, including egg quality.

Abstract
Microfluidic liquid biopsy has emerged as a promising clinical assay for early diagnosis. Herein, we propose acoustofluidic separation of biomarker proteins from platelets in plasma using aptamer-functionalized microparticles. As model proteins, C-reactive protein and thrombin were spiked in human platelet-rich plasma. The target proteins were selectively conjugated with their corresponding aptamer-functionalized microparticles of different sizes, and the particle complexes served as a mobile carrier for the conjugated proteins. The proposed acoustofluidic device was composed of an interdigital transducer (IDT) patterned on a piezoelectric substrate and a disposable polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microfluidic chip. The PDMS chip was placed in a tilted arrangement with the IDT to utilize both vertical and horizontal components of surface acoustic wave-induced acoustic radiation force (ARF) for multiplexed assay at high-throughput. The two different-sized particles experienced the ARF at different magnitudes and were separated from platelets in plasma. The IDT on the piezoelectric substrate could be reusable, while the microfluidic chip can be replaceable for repeated assays. The sample processing throughput with the separation efficiency >95% has been improved such that the volumetric flow rate and flow velocity were 1.6 ml/h and 37 mm/s, respectively. For the prevention of platelet activation and protein adsorption to the microchannel, polyethylene oxide solution was introduced as sheath flows and coating on to the walls. We conducted scanning electron microscopy, x-ray photoemission spectroscopy , and sodium dodecyl sulfate- analysis before and after the separation to confirm the protein capture and separation. We expect that the proposed approach will provide new prospects for particle-based liquid biopsy using blood.

Abstract
Extracts from Boswellia serrata (Bs) and Salix alba (Sa) are used as supplements in poultry feed. The aims of this research were to study the possible effects of dietary supplementation with Bs and Sa extracts on serum and albumen proteins, zinc and iron, and yolk cholesterol content in Leghorn hens during the critical phase of the onset of laying. A total of 120 pullets, 17 weeks of age, were assigned to two groups (control (C) and treated (T), n = 60 each). The T group received a supplement containing Bs (5%) and Sa (5%) for 12 weeks. The study lasted 19 weeks. Serum proteins were fractionated using agarose gel electrophoresis (AGE) and SDS–polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS–PAGE). Trace elements were determined in serum using atomic absorption spectrometry, and yolk cholesterol was determined using a colorimetric test. No significant differences were observed between control and supplemented hens for the analyzed biochemical indices. Moreover, the supplementation with phytoextracts did not negatively affect the physiological variations in serum proteins; therefore, it can be safely used as a treatment to prevent inflammatory states at onset and during the early laying phase.

Abstract
Biomarkers of inflammation are valuable tools for health status evaluation in numerous species. However, in poultry, methods for measuring acute phase proteins (APP) are sparse and rely on manual laboratory labour reserving these parameters mainly for research studies with APP as a focus point. To extend the use of APP beyond tightly focused research studies, blood from experimentally infected and control hens was analysed using equipment available in many veterinary clinics in order to identify easily accessible biomarkers of infection. Blood samples from broiler breeders (n = 30) inoculated intratracheally with either Escherichia coli or sterile vehicle were randomly selected at 2, 4 and 7 days post-infection (dpi) and subjected to biochemical analysis. Samples for bacteriological testing were collected, and all animals were subjected to a full necropsy for disease confirmation. Significantly higher levels of serum amyloid A were evident in the infected birds at 2 and 4 dpi (p < 0.01) compared to the controls. Likewise, haptoglobin (PIT54) levels were significantly elevated at 4 dpi (p < 0.01) in the infected animal, whilst at 2 dpi magnesium and calcium were significantly lower in the infected group (p < 0.05). Gross pathology and bacteriology confirmed the presence of infection in the E. coli inoculated birds. In conclusion, equipment routinely used in other species for rapid analysis of blood samples, successfully differentiated between sick and healthy birds, hereby, showing great potential as an easily added parameter of evaluation in research studies, and as a valuable decision-making tool for poultry veterinarians.

Abstract
One of the most desired treatments to combat stress and inflammation with minimal adverse effects in large bird populations is food additives. This study investigated the effects of dietary turmeric (Curcuma longa) on the level of serum amyloid A (SAA) as an indicator for acute phase response and antibody titer to Newcastle vaccine as an indicator for humoral immune response. A total of 300 Ross broiler chickens were assigned to five dietary groups. Two treatments received basal diets supplemented with different amount of turmeric (250 and 500 mg/kg). One group received aspirin (ASA; 250 mg/L) and one group aspirin-vitamin C (ASA; 250 mg/L + Ascorbic acid; 20 mg/L) in drinking water. There was one control group that received no feeding additives. The levels of SAA and humoral antibody response to Newcastle vaccine were measured during the entire production period. Turmeric administration significantly decreased the serum SAA concentrations after 2 weeks of treatment and later. It also significantly reduced SAA elevation due to the vaccinations on day 17 but not on day 28. After the second vaccination (d 19) ELISA titer in all treatment groups was higher than control group. Significant effect of dietary turmeric on body weight was also found at week 3 and later ages. Administration of 250 mg turmeric per kg diet is recommended for broiler chickens. It is concluded that turmeric is beneficial to minimize inflammatory effects of vaccination in commercial broiler chickens. Turmeric prevents and reduces stress and negative effects of inflammation and stimulates growth performance of broiler chickens.

Abstract
Egg is an encapsulated source of macro and micronutrients that meet all requirements to support embryonic development until hatching. The perfect balance and diversity in its nutrients along with its high digestibility and its affordable price has put the egg in the spotlight as a basic food for humans. However, egg still has to face many years of nutritionist recommendations aiming at restricting egg consumption to limit cardiovascular diseases incidence. Most experimental, clinical, and epidemiologic studies concluded that there was no evidence of a correlation between dietary cholesterol brought by eggs and an increase in plasma total-cholesterol. Egg remains a food product of high nutritional quality for adults including elderly people and children and is extensively consumed worldwide. In parallel, there is compelling evidence that egg also contains many and still-unexplored bioactive compounds, which may be of high interest in preventing/curing diseases. This review will give an overview of (1) the main nutritional characteristics of chicken egg, (2) emerging data related to egg bioactive compounds, and (3) some factors affecting egg composition including a comparison of nutritional value between eggs from various domestic species.
