Synthetic Organic Compounds From Paper Industry Wastes: Integrated Biotechnological Interventions

Sustainable Nanotechnology Based Techniques for Mitigating the Pollutants from Pulp and Paper Industry

Paper mills inevitably produce various pollutants, including chlorolignin, chlorophenols, chloroguaiacol, furan, cyanide, and heavy metals. These pollutants cause significant threats to aquatic and terrestrial life. The pulp and paper industries are looking for eco-friendly solutions for the disposal of effluents during paper processing. Moreover, environmental management practices are a key concern that may be addressed by removing these effluents using suitable bioremediation techniques. Therefore, we have discussed several eco-friendly nanotechnology based sustainable bioremediation technologies like the use of nanoparticles, nanomaterials, nanocomposites, nanoadsorbents, and several advanced methods such as electrocoagulation and photocatalysis, which may be utilized for the elimination of hazardous pollutants from paper industry effluents. This review finally includes critical insight into the potential use of the above-mentioned nanotechnology based interventions for mitigation of contaminants from the paper industry. Nevertheless, there are a few limitations and challenges toward implementation of such technologies, which are also discussed in this review.

One A3B Porphyrin Structure-Three Successful Applications

Porphyrins are versatile structures capable of acting in multiple ways. A mixed substituted A3B porphyrin, 5-(3-hydroxy-phenyl)-10,15,20-tris-(3-methoxy-phenyl)-porphyrin and its Pt(II) complex, were synthesised and fully characterised by 1H- and 13C-NMR, TLC, UV-Vis, FT-IR, fluorescence, AFM, TEM and SEM with EDX microscopy, both in organic solvents and in acidic mediums. The pure compounds were used, firstly, as sensitive materials for sensitive and selective optical and fluorescence detection of hydroquinone with the best results in the range 0.039-6.71 µM and a detection limit of 0.013 µM and, secondly, as corrosion inhibitors for carbon-steel (OL) in an acid medium giving a best performance of 88% in the case of coverings with Pt-porphyrin. Finally, the electrocatalytic activity for the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (HER and OER) of the free-base and Pt-metalated A3B porphyrins was evaluated in strong alkaline and acidic electrolyte solutions. The best results were obtained for the electrode modified with the metalated porphyrin, drop-casted on a graphite substrate from an N,N-dimethylformamide solution. In the strong acidic medium, the electrode displayed an HER overpotential of 108 mV, at i = -10 mA/cm2 and a Tafel slope value of 205 mV/dec.

Characterization of persistent organic pollutants and culturable and non-culturable bacterial communities in pulp and paper sludge after secondary treatment

Due to the presence of various organic contaminants, improper disposal of pulp-paper wastewater poses harm to the environment and human health. In this work, pulp-paper sludge (PPS) after secondary treatment were collected from M/s Century Pulp-paper Mills in India, the chemical nature of the organic pollutants was determined after solvent extraction. All the isolates were able to produce lipase (6.34-3.93 U ml^-1) which could account for the different fatty acids detected in the PPS. The dominant strains were in the classes of α and γ Proteobacteria followed by Firmicutes. The Shannon-Weiner diversity indexes for phylotype richness for the culturable and non-culturable bacterial community were 2.01 and 3.01, respectively, indicating the non-culturable bacterial strains has higher species richness and diversity compared to the culturable bacterial strains. However, the culturable strains had higher species evenness (0.94 vs 0.90). Results suggested only a few isolated strains were resistant to the POPs in the PPS, where as non-cultural bacteria survived by entering viable but non-cultural state. The isolated strains (Brevundimonas diminuta, Aeromonas punctata, Enterobacter hormaechei, Citrobacter braakii, Bacillus pumilus and Brevundimonas terrae) are known for their multidrug resistance but their tolerance to POPs have not previously been reported and deserved further investigation. The findings of this research established the presence of POPs which influence the microbial population. Tertiary treatment is recommended prior to the safe disposal of pulp paper mill waste into the environment.
