Bioinspired Slippery Lubricant-Infused Surfaces With External Stimuli Responsive Wettability: A Mini Review

Self-Transportation of Superparamagnetic Droplets on a Magnetic Gradient Slippery Surface with On/Off Sliding Controllability

Recently, research about droplet self-transportation on slippery surfaces has become a hotspot. However, to achieve on/off sliding control during the self-transportation process is still difficult. Herein, we report a magnetic slippery surface, and demonstrate on/off sliding control during the self-transportation of superparamagnetic droplets. The surface is prepared through integrating a substrate that has a gradient magnetic region with a layer of paraffin infused hydrophobic SiO₂ nanoparticles. On the surface, a superparamagnetic droplet is pinned at room temperature (about 25 °C), while it can self-transport directionally as the temperature is increased to about 70 °C. When the temperature is cooled down again, the droplet would return to the pinned state, indicating that on/off sliding control during the self-transportation process can be achieved. Furthermore, based on the excellent controllability, controllable coalescence of two droplets from opposite direction is displayed, demonstrating its potential application in numerous areas.

Fundamentals and utilization of solid/ liquid phase boundary interactions on functional surfaces

The affinity of macroscopic solid surfaces or dispersed nano- and bioparticles towards liquids plays a key role in many areas from fluid transport to interactions of the cells with phase boundaries. Forces between solid interfaces in water become especially important when the surface texture or particles are in the colloidal size range. Although, solid-liquid interactions are still prioritized subjects of materials science and therefore are extensively studied, the related literature still lacks in conclusive approaches, which involve as much information on fundamental aspects as on recent experimental findings related to influencing the wetting and other wetting-related properties and applications of different surfaces. The aim of this review is to fill this gap by shedding light on the mechanism-of-action and design principles of different, state-of-the-art functional macroscopic surfaces, ranging from self-cleaning, photoreactive or antimicrobial coatings to emulsion separation membranes, as these surfaces are gaining distinguished attention during the ongoing global environmental and epidemic crises. As there are increasing numbers of examples for stimulus-responsive surfaces and their interactions with liquids in the literature, as well, this overview also covers different external stimulus-responsive systems, regarding their mechanistic principles and application possibilities.

Slippery 3-dimensional porous bioabsorbable membranes with anti-adhesion and bactericidal properties as substitute for vaseline gauze

Vaseline gauze is a common type of wound dressing that consist of absorbent gauze impregnated with white petrolatum. It has excellent anti-adhesive property which can reduce trauma during dressing changes. However, this kind of wound dressing doesn't have bacterial killing property. Thus, a new kind of wound dressing that has anti-adhesive and bactericidal properties is needed urgently. Creating slippery liquid-impregnated porous surfaces (SLIPS) that insensitive to the structure of porous solid are generally viewed as a new anti-adhesion strategy. To expand the potential utility of SLIPS as substitute for vaseline gauze, dual-functional slippery membranes with anti-adhesion and bactericidal properties by using triclosan, vegetable oils and polylactic acid (PLA) were prepared. It's demonstrated that the triclosan-loaded/vegetable oils-infused PLA membranes (T/V-PM) has good cytocompatibility in vitro. Notably, the T/V-PM can gradually release biocide molecule into surrounding aqueous media. Moreover, the T/V-PM can kill planktonic bacterial cells without loss of their antifouling property. The in vivo study revealed that the T/V-PM can prevent the secondary injuries during wound dressing changes. This simple and low-cost strategy can be applied to inhibit blood and bacterial adhesion, and prevent tissue adhesion at the wound site. It's confirmed that the T/V-PM have great potential as substitute for vaseline gauze.

Gels as emerging anti-icing materials: a mini review

Gel materials have drawn great attention recently in the anti-icing research community due to their remarkable potential for reducing ice adhesion, inhibiting ice nucleation, and restricting ice propagation. Although the current anti-icing gels are in their infancy and far from practical applications due to poor durability, their outstanding prospect of icephobicity has already shed light on a new group of emerging anti-icing materials. There is a need for a timely review to consolidate the new trends and foster the development towards dedicated applications. Starting from the stage of icing, we first survey the relevant anti-icing strategies. The latest anti-icing gels are then categorized by their liquid phases into organogels, hydrogels, and ionogels. At the same time, the current research focuses, anti-icing mechanisms and shortcomings affiliated with each category are carefully analysed. Based upon the reported state-of-the-art anti-icing research and our own experience in polymer-based anti-icing materials, suggestions for the future development of the anti-icing gels are presented, including pathways to enhance durability, the need to build up the missing fundamentals, and the possibility to enable stimuli-responsive properties. The primary aim of this review is to motivate researchers in both the anti-icing and gel research communities to perform a synchronized effort to rapidly advance the understanding and making of gel-based next generation anti-icing materials.

Titanium Dioxide Derived Materials with Superwettability

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is widely used in various fields both in daily life and industry owing to its excellent photoelectric properties and its induced superwettability. Over the past several decades, various methods have been reported to improve the wettability of TiO2 and plenty of practical applications have been developed. The TiO2-derived materials with different morphologies display a variety of functions including photocatalysis, self-cleaning, oil-water separation, etc. Herein, various functions and applications of TiO2 with superwettability are summarized and described in different sections. First, a brief introduction about the discovery of photoelectrodes made of TiO2 is revealed. The ultra-fast spreading behaviors on TiO2 are shown in the part of ultra-fast spreading with superwettability. The part of controllable wettability introduces the controllable wettability of TiO2-derived materials and their related applications. Recent developments of interfacial photocatalysis and photoelectrochemical reactions with TiO2 are presented in the part of interfacial photocatalysis and photoelectrochemical reactions. The part of nanochannels for ion rectification describes ion transportation in nanochannels based on TiO2-derived materials. In the final section, a brief conclusion and a future outlook based on the superwettability of TiO2 are shown.

A Review of Smart Lubricant-Infused Surfaces for Droplet Manipulation

The nepenthes-inspired lubricant-infused surface (LIS) is emerging as a novel repellent surface with self-healing, self-cleaning, pressure stability and ultra-slippery properties. Recently, stimuli-responsive materials to construct a smart LIS have broadened the application of LIS for droplet manipulation, showing great promise in microfluidics. This review mainly focuses on the recent developments towards the droplet manipulation on LIS with different mechanisms induced by various external stimuli, including thermo, light, electric, magnetism, and mechanical force. First, the droplet condition on LIS, determined by the properties of the droplet, the lubricant and substrate, is illustrated. Droplet manipulation via altering the droplet regime realized by different mechanisms, such as varying slipperiness, electrostatic force and wettability, is discussed. Moreover, some applications on droplet manipulation employed in various filed, including microreactors, microfluidics, etc., are also presented. Finally, a summary of this work and possible future research directions for the transport of droplets on smart LIS are outlined to promote the development of this field.

Magnetically Responsive Film Decorated with Microcilia for Robust and Controllable Manipulation of Droplets

Droplet manipulations are critical for applications ranging from biochemical analysis, medical diagnosis to environmental controls. Even though magnetic actuation has exhibited great potential, the capability of high-speed, precise manipulation, and mixing improvement covering a broad droplet volume has not yet been realized. Herein, we demonstrated that the magnetic actuation could be conveniently achieved via decorating the magnetically responsive film with microcilia. Under magnetic field, the film can quickly response with localized deformation, along with the microcilia to realize the surface superhydrophobicity for droplet manipulation with velocity up to ∼173 mm/s covering a broad volume of 2-100 μL. The robust system further allows us to realize rapid and complete droplet mixing within ∼1.6 s. In addition, the microcilia decorated surface can preserve the robust superhydrophobicity after various stability tests, for example, normal pressing, chemical corrosion, and mechanical abrasion, exhibiting the possibility toward the long-term and real applications. With the multifunctional demonstrations such as obvious mixing improvement, parallel manipulation, and serial dilution, we believe that the methodology can open up a magnetic field-based avenue for future applications in digital microfluidics, and biochemical assays, etc.

Life and death of liquid-infused surfaces: a review on the choice, analysis and fate of the infused liquid layer

We review the rational choice, the analysis, the depletion and the properties imparted by the liquid layer in liquid-infused surfaces – a new class of low-adhesion surface.
