Bio-based Substances From Compost as Reactant and Active Phase for Selective Capture of Cationic Pollutants From Waste Water

A multifunctional recyclable adsorbent based on engineered MIL-125 (Ti) magnetic mesoporous composite for the effective removal of pathogens

The elimination of pathogenic bacteria from water sources is currently crucial for obtaining drinkable water. Therefore, the development of platforms with the ability to interact with pathogens and remove them is a potential future tool for medicine, food and water safety. In this work, we have grafted a layer of NH2-MIL-125 (Ti) on Fe3O4@SiO2 magnetic nanospheres for the removal of multiple pathogenic bacteria from water. The synthesized Fe3O4@SiO2@NH2-MIL-125 (Ti) nano adsorbent was characterized by FE-SEM, HR-TEM, FT-IR, XRD, BET surface analysis, magnetization tests, respectively, which illustrated its well-defined core-shell structure and magnetic behaviour. The prepared magnetic-MOF composite sorbent was attractive towards capturing a wide range of pathogens (S. typhimurium, S. aureus, E. coli, P. aeruginosa and K. pneumoniae) under experimental conditions. Influence factors such as adsorbent dosage, bacterial concentration, pH and incubation time were optimized for enhanced bacterial capture. The application of an external magnetic field removed Fe3O4@SiO2@NH2-MIL-125 (Ti) nano adsorbent from the solution along with sweeping the attached pathogenic bacteria. The non-specific removal efficiency of S. typhimurium for magnetic MOF composite was 96.58%, while it was only 46.81% with Fe3O4@SiO2 particles. For specific removal, 97.58% of S. typhimurium could be removed selectively from a mixture with monoclonal anti- Salmonella antibody conjugated magnetic MOF at a lower concentration of 1.0 mg/mL. The developed nano adsorbent may find great potential in microbiology applications and water remediation.

Novel Hydroxyapatite Beads for the Adsorption of Radionuclides from Decommissioned Nuclear Power Plant Sites

Although a powdered form of hydroxyapatite (p-HdA) has been studied for the adsorption of heavy metals that contaminate the restoration sites of decommissioned nuclear power plants, most of the studies are limited in the laboratory due to the head loss and post-separation in practical applications. Herein, we fabricated a porous bead form of HdA (b-HdA) as a novel adsorbent for removing radionuclides from aqueous environments via a facile synthesis by mixing the p-HdA precursor and polyvinyl butyral (PVB) as a binder and added a sintering process for the final production of a porous structure. The spherical b-HdA with an approximate diameter of 2.0 mm was successfully fabricated. The effectiveness of the b-HdA at removing Co(II) was investigated via the adsorption equilibrium at various experimental temperatures. The b-HdA exhibited the adsorption capacity for Co(II) ions with a maximum of 7.73 and 11.35 mg/g at 293 K and 313 K, respectively. The experimental kinetic data were well described using a pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the adsorption mechanisms of Co(II) onto the b-HdA were revealed to be a chemisorption process with intraparticle diffusion being the rate-limiting step. In addition, the competitive adsorption onto the b-HdA with the order of U(VI) > Co(II) > Ni(II) > Sr(II) > Cs(I) was also observed in the multi-radionuclides system. Considering the advantages of the size, applicability to the continuous-flow column, and the easy separation from treated water, the b-HdA can be an excellent absorbent with high potential for practical applications for removing radionuclides.

Carbonaceous Adsorbent Derived from Sulfur-Impregnated Heavy Oil Ash and Its Lead Removal Ability from Aqueous Solution

A novel carbonaceous adsorbent was prepared from sulfur-impregnated heavy oil ash via pyrolysis using potassium sulfide (K2S) solution, and its ability to remove lead (Pb2+) from aqueous solutions was examined. It was compared with an adsorbent synthesized by conventional pyrolysis using potassium hydroxide (KOH) solution. Specifically, the raw ash was immersed in 1 M K2S solution or 1 M KOH solution for 1 day and subsequently heated at 100–1000 °C in a nitrogen (N2) atmosphere. After heating for 1 h, the solid was naturally cooled in N2 atmosphere, and subsequently washed and dried to yield the product. Regardless of the pyrolysis temperature, the product generated using K2S (Product-K2S) has a higher sulfur content than that obtained using KOH (Product-KOH). Moreover, Product-K2S has a higher lead removal ability than Product-KOH, whereas the specific surface area of the former is smaller than that of the latter. Product-K2S obtained at 300 °C (Product-K2S-300) achieves the highest lead adsorption and a high selective lead removal from a ternary Pb2+–Cu2+–Zn2+ solution. The equilibrium capacity of Product-K2S-300 was found to fit the Langmuir model better than the Freundlich model, and its calculated maximum adsorption capacity is 0.54 mmol/g. From the ternary Pb2+–Cu2+–Zn2+ solution, the order of adsorption by Product-K2S-300 is Pb2+ > Cu2+ > Zn2+, and the removal of Pb2+ and Cu2+ increases as the pH of the solution increases.
