Phytoplankton Growth and Productivity in the Western North Atlantic: Observations of Regional Variability From the NAAMES Field Campaigns

Marine phytoplankton downregulate core photosynthesis and carbon storage genes upon rapid mixed layer shallowing

Marine phytoplankton are a diverse group of photoautotrophic organisms and key mediators in the global carbon cycle. Phytoplankton physiology and biomass accumulation are closely tied to mixed layer depth, but the intracellular metabolic pathways activated in response to changes in mixed layer depth remain less explored. Here, metatranscriptomics was used to characterize the phytoplankton community response to a mixed layer shallowing (from 233 to 5 m) over the course of two days during the late spring in the Northwest Atlantic. Most phytoplankton genera downregulated core photosynthesis, carbon storage, and carbon fixation genes as the system transitioned from a deep to a shallow mixed layer and shifted towards catabolism of stored carbon supportive of rapid cell growth. In contrast, phytoplankton genera exhibited divergent transcriptional patterns for photosystem light harvesting complex genes during this transition. Active virus infection, taken as the ratio of virus to host transcripts, increased in the Bacillariophyta (diatom) phylum and decreased in the Chlorophyta (green algae) phylum upon mixed layer shallowing. A conceptual model is proposed to provide ecophysiological context for our findings, in which integrated light limitation and lower division rates during transient deep mixing are hypothesized to disrupt resource-driven, oscillating transcript levels related to photosynthesis, carbon fixation, and carbon storage. Our findings highlight shared and unique transcriptional response strategies within phytoplankton communities acclimating to the dynamic light environment associated with transient deep mixing and shallowing events during the annual North Atlantic bloom.

Virus infection of phytoplankton increases average molar mass and reduces hygroscopicity of aerosolized organic matter

Viral infection of phytoplankton is a pervasive mechanism of cell death and bloom termination, which leads to the production of dissolved and colloidal organic matter that can be aerosolized into the atmosphere. Earth-observing satellites can track the growth and death of phytoplankton blooms on weekly time scales but the impact of viral infection on the cloud forming potential of associated aerosols is largely unknown. Here, we determine the influence of viral-derived organic matter, purified viruses, and marine hydrogels on the cloud condensation nuclei activity of their aerosolized solutions, compared to organic exudates from healthy phytoplankton. Dissolved organic material derived from exponentially growing and infected cells of well-characterized eukaryotic phytoplankton host-virus systems, including viruses from diatoms, coccolithophores and chlorophytes, was concentrated, desalted, and nebulized to form aerosol particles composed of primarily of organic matter. Aerosols from infected phytoplankton cultures resulted in an increase in critical activation diameter and average molar mass in three out of five combinations evaluated, along with a decrease in organic kappa (hygroscopicity) compared to healthy cultures and seawater controls. The infected samples also displayed evidence of increased surface tension depression at realistic cloud water vapor supersaturations. Amending the samples with xanthan gum to simulate marine hydrogels increased variability in organic kappa and surface tension in aerosols with high organic to salt ratios. Our findings suggest that the pulses of increased dissolved organic matter associated with viral infection in surface waters may increase the molar mass of dissolved organic compounds relative to surface waters occupied by healthy phytoplankton or low phytoplankton biomass.

Dual wavelength laser Doppler anemometer for simultaneous velocity and particulate size distribution measurements in submarine environments

An in-situ laser Doppler current probe (LDCP) for the simultaneous measurements of the micro-scale subsurface current speed and the characterizations of micron particles is dedicated in this paper. The LDCP performs as an extension sensor for the state-of-the-art laser Doppler anemometry (LDA). The all-fiber LDCP utilized a compact dual wavelength (491 nm and 532 nm) diode pumped solid state laser as the light source to achieve the simultaneous measurements of the two components of the current speed. Besides its ability for the measurements of the current speed, the LDCP is also capable of obtaining the equivalent spherical size distribution of the suspended particles within small size range. The micro-scale measurement volume formed by two intersecting coherent laser beams makes it possible to accurately estimate the size distribution of the micron suspended particles with high temporal and spatial resolution. With its deployment during the field campaign at Yellow Sea, the LDCP has been experimentally demonstrated as an effective instrument to capture the micro-scale subsurface ocean current speed. The algorithm for retrieving the size distribution of the small suspended particles (2∼7.5µm) has been developed and validated. The combined LDCP system could be applied to the continuous long-term observations of plankton community structure, ocean water optical parameter over a wide range, and useful to elucidate the processes and interactions of the carbon cycles in the upper ocean.

Evaluating the influence of environmental variables on the length-weight relationship and prediction modelling in flathead grey mullet, Mugil cephalus Linnaeus, 1758

Fish stocks that are grown under diverse environmental conditions have different biometric relationships and growth patterns. The biometric length-weight relationship (LWR) is an essential fishery assessment tool, as fish growth is continuous and depends on genetic and environmental factors. The present study attempts to understand the LWR of the flathead grey mullet, Mugil cephalus Linnaeus, 1758, from different locations. The study area encompassed its distribution in the wild across freshwater location (one), coastal habitats (eight locations), and estuaries (six locations) in India to determine the relationship between various environmental parameters. Specimens (n = 476) of M. cephalus were collected from commercial catches and the length and weight of individual specimens were recorded. Monthly data from the study locations were extracted for nine environmental variables from the datasets downloaded from the Physical Oceanography Distributed Active Archive Center (PO.DAAC) and the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS) over 16 years (2002 to 2017) on the Geographical Information System platform. The parameters of the LWR, intercept 'a' and slope or regression coefficient 'b', varied from 0.005321 to 0.22182 and 2.235 to 3.173, respectively. The condition factor ranged from 0.92 to 1.41. The partial least squares (PLS) score scatter plot matrix indicated differences in the environmental variables between the locations. PLS analysis of the regression coefficient and environment parameters revealed that certain environment variables viz., sea surface temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, nitrate, and phosphate, played a positive role. However, chlorophyll, pH, silicate, and iron played a negative role in influencing weight growth across various locations. The results revealed that the M. cephalus specimens from three locations, Mandapam, Karwar, and Ratnagiri, possessed significantly higher fitness to their environment than those from the other six locations. The PLS model can be used to predict weight growth under the various environmental conditions of different ecosystems. The three identified locations are useful sites for the mariculture of this species considering their growth performance, the environmental variables, and their interactions. The results of this study will improve the management and conservation of exploited stocks in regions affected by climate change. Our results will also aid in making environment clearance decisions for coastal development projects and will improve the efficiency of mariculture systems.

Ocean Aerobiology

Ocean aerobiology is defined here as the study of biological particles of marine origin, including living organisms, present in the atmosphere and their role in ecological, biogeochemical, and climate processes. Hundreds of trillions of microorganisms are exchanged between ocean and atmosphere daily. Within a few days, tropospheric transport potentially disperses microorganisms over continents and between oceans. There is a need to better identify and quantify marine aerobiota, characterize the time spans and distances of marine microorganisms’ atmospheric transport, and determine whether microorganisms acclimate to atmospheric conditions and remain viable, or even grow. Exploring the atmosphere as a microbial habitat is fundamental for understanding the consequences of dispersal and will expand our knowledge of biodiversity, biogeography, and ecosystem connectivity across different marine environments. Marine organic matter is chemically transformed in the atmosphere, including remineralization back to CO₂. The magnitude of these transformations is insignificant in the context of the annual marine carbon cycle, but may be a significant sink for marine recalcitrant organic matter over long (∼10⁴ years) timescales. In addition, organic matter in sea spray aerosol plays a significant role in the Earth’s radiative budget by scattering solar radiation, and indirectly by affecting cloud properties. Marine organic matter is generally a poor source of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN), but a significant source of ice nucleating particles (INPs), affecting the formation of mixed-phase and ice clouds. This review will show that marine biogenic aerosol plays an impactful, but poorly constrained, role in marine ecosystems, biogeochemical processes, and the Earth’s climate system. Further work is needed to characterize the connectivity and feedbacks between the atmosphere and ocean ecosystems in order to integrate this complexity into Earth System models, facilitating future climate and biogeochemical predictions.

The Seasonal Flux and Fate of Dissolved Organic Carbon Through Bacterioplankton in the Western North Atlantic

The oceans teem with heterotrophic bacterioplankton that play an appreciable role in the uptake of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) derived from phytoplankton net primary production (NPP). As such, bacterioplankton carbon demand (BCD), or gross heterotrophic production, represents a major carbon pathway that influences the seasonal accumulation of DOC in the surface ocean and, subsequently, the potential vertical or horizontal export of seasonally accumulated DOC. Here, we examine the contributions of bacterioplankton and DOM to ecological and biogeochemical carbon flow pathways, including those of the microbial loop and the biological carbon pump, in the Western North Atlantic Ocean (∼39-54°N along ∼40°W) over a composite annual phytoplankton bloom cycle. Combining field observations with data collected from corresponding DOC remineralization experiments, we estimate the efficiency at which bacterioplankton utilize DOC, demonstrate seasonality in the fraction of NPP that supports BCD, and provide evidence for shifts in the bioavailability and persistence of the seasonally accumulated DOC. Our results indicate that while the portion of DOC flux through bacterioplankton relative to NPP increased as seasons transitioned from high to low productivity, there was a fraction of the DOM production that accumulated and persisted. This persistent DOM is potentially an important pool of organic carbon available for export to the deep ocean via convective mixing, thus representing an important export term of the biological carbon pump.

Rapid photoacclimation during episodic deep mixing augments the biological carbon pump

Episodic deep mixing events are one component of the biological carbon pump that physically transports organic carbon into the mesopelagic. Episodic deep mixing also disrupts summertime thermal stratification thereby changing the light field and nutrient concentrations available for phytoplankton growth. Phytoplankton survival and growth below the mixed layer following restratification depends on how rapidly cells can employ a variety of photoacclimation processes in response to the environmental changes. To compare the relative timescales of summertime episodic deep mixing events with the timescales of phytoplankton photoacclimation processes, we first analyzed autonomous float data to survey the frequency and magnitude of deep mixing events in the western North Atlantic Ocean. Next, we simulated a sustained deep mixing event in the laboratory and measured rates of acclimation processes ranging from light harvesting to growth in a model diatom and green alga. In both algae increases in chlorophyll (Chl) were coupled to growth, but growth of the green alga lagged the diatom by about a day. In float profiles, significant increases in Chl and phytoplankton carbon (C _phyto) were detected below the mixed layer following episodic deep mixing events. These events pose a previously unrecognized source of new production below the mixed layer that can significantly boost the amount of carbon available for export to the deep ocean.

In Situ Estimates of Net Primary Production in the Western North Atlantic With Argo Profiling Floats

The ¹⁴C incubation method for net primary production (NPP) has limited spatial/temporal resolution, while satellite approaches cannot provide direct information at depth. With chlorophyll-a and backscatter measurements from BGC-Argo floats, we quantified year-round NPP in the western North Atlantic Ocean using both the Carbon-based Productivity Model (CbPM) and Photoacclimation Productivity Model (PPM). Comparison with NPP profiles from ¹⁴C incubation measurements showed advantages and limitations of both models. CbPM reproduced the magnitude of NPP in most cases. However, in the summer the CbPM-based NPP had a large peak in the subsurface, which was an artifact from the subsurface chlorophyll maximum caused by photoacclimation. PPM avoided the artifacts from photoacclimation, but the magnitude of PPM-derived NPP was smaller than the ¹⁴C result. Different NPP distribution patterns along a North-South transect in the Western North Atlantic Ocean were observed, including higher winter NPP/lower summer NPP in the south, timing differences in NPP seasonal phenology, and different NPP depth distribution patterns in the summer months. Using a 6-months record of concurrent oxygen and bio-optical measurements from two Argo floats, we also demonstrated the ability of Argo floats to obtain estimates of the net community production to NPP ratio, ranging from 0.3 in July to -1.0 in December 2016. Our results highlight the utility of float bio-optical profiles and indicate that environmental conditions (e.g., light availability, nutrient supply) are major factors controlling the seasonality and spatial (horizontal and vertical) distributions of NPP in the western North Atlantic Ocean.

Evaluation of diagnostic pigments to estimate phytoplankton size classes

Phytoplankton accessory pigments are commonly used to estimate phytoplankton size classes, particularly during development and validation of biogeochemical models and satellite ocean color-based algorithms. The diagnostic pigment analysis (DPA) is based on bulk measurements of pigment concentrations and relies on assumptions regarding the presence of specific pigments in different phytoplankton taxonomic groups. Three size classes are defined by the DPA: picoplankton, nanoplankton, and microplankton. Until now, the DPA has not been evaluated against an independent approach that provides phytoplankton size calculated on a per-cell basis. Automated quantitative cell imagery of microplankton and some nanoplankton, used in combination with conventional flow cytometry for enumeration of picoplankton and nanoplankton, provide a novel opportunity to perform an independent evaluation of the DPA. Here, we use a data set from the North Atlantic Ocean that encompasses all seasons and a wide range of chlorophyll concentrations (0.18-5.14 mg m^-3). Results show that the DPA overestimates microplankton and picoplankton when compared to cytometry data, and subsequently underestimates the contribution of nanoplankton to total biomass. In contrast to the assumption made by the DPA that the microplankton size class is largely made up of diatoms and dinoflagellates, imaging-in-flow cytometry shows significant presence of diatoms and dinoflagellates in the nanoplankton size class. Additionally, chlorophyll b is commonly attributed solely to picoplankton by the DPA, but Chl b-containing phytoplankton are observed with imaging in both nanoplankton and microplankton size classes. We suggest revisions to the DPA equations and application of uncertainties when calculating size classes from diagnostic pigments.
