Constitutive spectral EEG peaks in the gamma range: suppressed by sleep, reduced by mental activity and resistant to sensory stimulation

Decoding familiar visual object categories in the mu rhythm oscillatory response

Whilst previous research has linked attenuation of the mu rhythm to the observation of specific visual categories, and even to a potential role in action observation via a putative mirror neuron system, much of this work has not considered what specific type of information might be coded in this oscillatory response when triggered via vision. Here, we sought to determine whether the mu rhythm contains content-specific information about the identity of familiar (and also unfamiliar) graspable objects. In the present study, right-handed participants (N = 27) viewed images of both familiar (apple, wine glass) and unfamiliar (cubie, smoothie) graspable objects, whilst performing an orthogonal task at fixation. Multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA) revealed significant decoding of familiar, but not unfamiliar, visual object categories in the mu rhythm response. Thus, simply viewing familiar graspable objects may automatically trigger activation of associated tactile and/or motor properties in sensorimotor areas, reflected in the mu rhythm. In addition, we report significant attenuation in the central beta band for both familiar and unfamiliar visual objects, but not in the mu rhythm. Our findings highlight how analysing two different aspects of the oscillatory response - either attenuation or the representation of information content - provide complementary views on the role of the mu rhythm in response to viewing graspable object categories.

Individual/Peak Gamma Frequency: What Do We Know?

In recent years, the concept of individualized measures of electroencephalographic (EEG) activity has emerged. Gamma-band activity plays an important role in many sensory and cognitive processes. Thus, peak frequency in the gamma range has received considerable attention. However, peak or individual gamma frequency (IGF) is rarely used as a primary measure of interest; consequently, little is known about its nature and functional significance. With this review, we attempt to comprehensively overview available information on the functional properties of peak gamma frequency, addressing its relationship with certain processes and/or modulation by various factors. Here, we show that IGFs seem to be related to various endogenous and exogenous factors. Broad functional aspects that are related to IGF might point to the differences in underlying mechanisms. Therefore, research utilizing different types of stimulation for IGF estimation and covering several functional aspects in the same population is required. Moreover, IGFs span a wide range of frequencies (30-100 Hz). This could be partly due to the variability of methods used to extract the measures of IGF. In order to overcome this issue, further studies aiming at the optimization of IGF extraction would be greatly beneficial.

Evaluation of Artifact Subspace Reconstruction for Automatic Artifact Components Removal in Multi-Channel EEG Recordings

OBJECTIVE

Artifact subspace reconstruction (ASR) is an automatic, online-capable, component-based method that can effectively remove transient or large-amplitude artifacts contaminating electroencephalographic (EEG) data. However, the effectiveness of ASR and the optimal choice of its parameter have not been systematically evaluated and reported, especially on actual EEG data.

METHODS

This paper systematically evaluates ASR on 20 EEG recordings taken during simulated driving experiments. Independent component analysis (ICA) and an independent component classifier are applied to separate artifacts from brain signals to quantitatively assess the effectiveness of the ASR.

RESULTS

ASR removes more eye and muscle components than brain components. Even though some eye and muscle components retain after ASR cleaning, the power of their temporal activities is reduced. Study results also showed that ASR cleaning improved the quality of a subsequent ICA decomposition.

CONCLUSIONS

Empirical results show that the optimal ASR parameter is between 20 and 30, balancing between removing non-brain signals and retaining brain activities.

SIGNIFICANCE

With an appropriate choice of parameter, ASR can be a powerful and automatic artifact removal approach for offline data analysis or online real-time EEG applications such as clinical monitoring and brain-computer interfaces.

Neural correlates of time distortion in a preaction period

An intention to move distorts the perception of time. For example, a visual stimulus presented during the preparation of manual movements is perceived longer than actual. Although neural mechanisms underlying this action-induced time distortion have been unclear, here we propose a new model in which the distortion is caused by a sensory-motor interaction mediated by alpha rhythm. It is generally known that viewing a stimulus induces a reduction in amplitude of occipital 10-Hz wave ("alpha-blocking"). Preparing manual movements are also known to reduce alpha power in the motor cortex ("mu-suppression"). When human participants prepared movements while viewing a stimulus, we found that those two types of classical alpha suppression interacted in the third (time-processing) region in the brain, inducing a prominent decrease in alpha power in the supplementary motor cortex (SMA). Interestingly, this alpha suppression in the SMA occurred in an asymmetric manner (such that troughs of alpha rhythm was more strongly suppressed than peaks), which can produce a gradual increase (slow shift of baseline) in neural activity. Since the neural processing in the SMA encodes a subjective time length for a sensory event, the increased activity in this region (by the asymmetric alpha suppression) would cause an overestimation of elapsed time, resulting in the action-induced time distortion. Those results showed a unique role of alpha wave enabling communications across distant (visual, motor, and time-processing) regions in the brain and further suggested a new type of sensory-motor interaction based on neural desynchronization (rather than synchronization).

The Harvard Automated Processing Pipeline for Electroencephalography (HAPPE): Standardized Processing Software for Developmental and High-Artifact Data

Electroenchephalography (EEG) recordings collected with developmental populations present particular challenges from a data processing perspective. These EEGs have a high degree of artifact contamination and often short recording lengths. As both sample sizes and EEG channel densities increase, traditional processing approaches like manual data rejection are becoming unsustainable. Moreover, such subjective approaches preclude standardized metrics of data quality, despite the heightened importance of such measures for EEGs with high rates of initial artifact contamination. There is presently a paucity of automated resources for processing these EEG data and no consistent reporting of data quality measures. To address these challenges, we propose the Harvard Automated Processing Pipeline for EEG (HAPPE) as a standardized, automated pipeline compatible with EEG recordings of variable lengths and artifact contamination levels, including high-artifact and short EEG recordings from young children or those with neurodevelopmental disorders. HAPPE processes event-related and resting-state EEG data from raw files through a series of filtering, artifact rejection, and re-referencing steps to processed EEG suitable for time-frequency-domain analyses. HAPPE also includes a post-processing report of data quality metrics to facilitate the evaluation and reporting of data quality in a standardized manner. Here, we describe each processing step in HAPPE, perform an example analysis with EEG files we have made freely available, and show that HAPPE outperforms seven alternative, widely-used processing approaches. HAPPE removes more artifact than all alternative approaches while simultaneously preserving greater or equivalent amounts of EEG signal in almost all instances. We also provide distributions of HAPPE's data quality metrics in an 867 file dataset as a reference distribution and in support of HAPPE's performance across EEG data with variable artifact contamination and recording lengths.
