Abstract
Aim Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is difficult to diagnose objectively due to its heterogeneous and complex manifestations. This study aimed to objectively characterize the behavioral phenotypes of ASD children by exploring the multiscale behavioral dynamics. Methods We applied behavioral organization (BO) and multiscale sample entropy (MSE) analyses to physical activity data collected from ASD and typically developing children, using wearable monitors in their daily life. We also examined their correlation with auditory startle response measures and clinical questionnaires, including the Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS) and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). Results A significant decrease in MSE at timescales longer than 6 min was observed in ASD children, suggesting decreased irregularity or unpredictability, potentially linked to repetitive behaviors or stereotyped patterns commonly observed in ASD. Additionally, an increase in MSE positively correlated with prepulse inhibition levels, indicating its relationship with sensorimotor gating. Moreover, the observed significant negative correlation with the total difficulty score of SDQ substantiates MSE's potential as an objective metric for assessing general mental health problems associated with ASD. Conclusion Multiscale analysis enhances the understanding of ASD's behavioral dynamics, providing valuable metrics for real-world assessments.

Abstract
Prenatal exposure to environmental factors may play an important role in the aetiopathogenesis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We aim to investigate the potential effects of low-dose x-rays from dental diagnostic x-rays on neurodevelopment and molecular mechanisms associated with ASD in developing zebrafish embryos. Zebrafish embryos were divided into four groups and exposed using a dental x-ray unit: control, 0.08, 0.15 and 0.30 seconds, which are exemplary exposure settings for periapical imaging. These exposure times were measured as 7.17, 23.17 and 63.83 mSv using optical stimulated luminescence dosimeters. At the end of 72 hours post-fertilization, locomotor activity, oxidant-antioxidant status, and acetylcholine esterase (AChE) activity were analyzed. Expression of genes related to apoptosis (bax, bcl2a, p53), neurogenesis (α1-tubulin, syn2a, neurog1, elavl3) and ASD (eif4eb, adsl2a, shank3) was determined by RT-PCR. Even at reduced doses, developmental toxicity was observed in three groups as evidenced by pericardial edema, yolk sac edema and scoliosis. Deleterious effects of dental x-rays on neurogenesis through impaired locomotor activity, oxidative stress, apoptosis and alterations in genes associated with neurogenesis and ASD progression were more pronounced in the 0.30s exposure group. Based on these results we suggest that the associations between ASD and low-dose ionizing radiation need a closer look.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We described the range and types of objective measures of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children and young people (CYP) reported in research that can be applied in naturalistic settings. DESIGN Scoping review using best practice methods. DATA SOURCES MEDLINE, APA PsycINFO, Embase, (via OVID); British Education Index, Education Resources Information Centre, Education Abstracts, Education Research Complete, Child Development and Adolescent Papers, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Psychology and Behavioural Sciences Collection (via EBSCO) were searched between 1 December 2021 and 28 February 2022. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA Papers reported an objective measure of ADHD traits in CYP in naturalistic settings written in English. DATA EXTRACTION AND SYNTHESIS 2802 papers were identified; titles and abstracts were screened by two reviewers. 454 full-text papers were obtained and screened. 128 papers were eligible and included in the review. Data were extracted by the lead author, with 10% checked by a second team member. Descriptive statistics and narrative synthesis were used. RESULTS Of the 128 papers, 112 were primary studies and 16 were reviews. 87% were conducted in the USA, and only 0.8% originated from the Global South, with China as the sole representative. 83 objective measures were identified (64 observational and 19 acceleration-sensitive measures). Notably, the Behaviour Observation System for Schools (BOSS), a behavioural observation, emerged as one of the predominant measures. 59% of papers reported on aspects of the reliability of the measure (n=76). The highest inter-rater reliability was found in an unnamed measure (% agreement=1), Scope Classroom Observation Checklist (% agreement=0.989) and BOSS (% agreement=0.985). 11 papers reported on aspects of validity. 12.5% of papers reported on their method of data collection (eg, pen and paper, on an iPad). Of the 47 papers that reported observer training, 5 reported the length of time the training took ranging from 3 hours to 1 year. Despite recommendations to integrate objective measures alongside conventional assessments, use remains limited, potentially due to inconsistent psychometric properties across studies. CONCLUSIONS Many objective measures of ADHD have been developed and described, with the majority of these being direct behavioural observations. There is a lack of reporting of psychometric properties and guidance for researchers administering these measures in practice and in future studies. Methodological transparency is needed. Encouragingly, recent papers begin to address these issues.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of the ethyl acetate fraction of amla (EAFA) extract on valproic acid (VPA)-induced postnatal autism in BALB/c mice. Our study revealed that mice treated with VPA on postnatal day 14 (PND14) showed significant abnormal behaviours such as social interaction, social affiliation, anxiety, and motor coordination compared to the control group, while EAFA extract treatment (100 mg/kg) ameliorated these symptoms. Our study highlights the protective effect of EAFA extract on improving behavioural alterations, significantly restoring anti-oxidative enzymes such as GST and GR, and reducing MDA and NO levels. Furthermore, the EAFA-treated group significantly lowered the proinflammatory markers (IL-1β and TNF-α) and the expression of up-regulated 5-HT1D, 5-HT2A, and D2 receptor proteins. Based on histopathological studies, the percentage of neuronal injury in the EAFA-treated group as well as cellular structural changes were reduced using SEM analysis. In conclusion, the present study suggests that treatment with EAFA extract ameliorates VPA-induced autism due to its anti-oxidant and neuroprotective activity.

Abstract
Background Motor coordination difficulties could contribute to social communication deficits in autistic children. However, the exploration of the mechanism implicated in these claims has been limited by the lack of potential confounders such as executive function (EF). Methods We investigated the role that EF plays in the relationship between motor coordination and social communication in a school-aged autistic population via a structural model in a statistically robust manner. The results of questionnaires, including the Developmental Coordination Disorder questionnaire, the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function, and the Social Responsiveness Scale, were collected to measure motor coordination, social communication deficits, and EF. Results A total of 182 autistic children (7.61±1.31 years, 87.9% boys) were included in the final analysis. In the model with EF as a mediator, the total effect (β=-0.599, P<0.001) and the direct effect (β=-0.331, P =0.003) of motor coordination function on social communication were both significant among autistic children without intellectual disability (ID), as were indirect effects through EF (β=-0.268, P<0.001). Conclusion EF partially mediates the motor coordination and social communication correlation among autistic children. We suggest that motor coordination should be included in the routine evaluation of autistic surveillance and rehabilitation procedures.
