Abstract
Identifying and integrating the neural correlates of suicidal ideation and behaviors is crucial to expand the knowledge and develop targeted strategies to prevent suicide. This review aimed to describe the neural correlates of suicidal ideation, behavior and the transition between them, using different magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) modalities, providing an up-to-date overview of the literature. To be included, the observational, experimental, or quasi-experimental studies must include adult patients currently diagnosed with major depressive disorder and investigate the neural correlates of suicidal ideation, behavior and/or the transition using MRI. The searches were conducted on PubMed, ISI Web of Knowledge and Scopus. Fifty articles were included in this review: 22 on suicidal ideation, 26 on suicide behaviors and two on the transition between them. The qualitative analysis of the included studies suggested alterations in the frontal, limbic and temporal lobes in suicidal ideation associated with deficits in emotional processing and regulation, and in the frontal, limbic, parietal lobes, and basal ganglia in suicide behaviors associated with impairments in decision-making. Gaps in the literature and methodological concerns were identified and might be addressed in future studies.

Abstract
Suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States. Historically, scientific inquiry has focused on psychological theory. However, more recent studies have started to shed light on complex biosignatures using MRI techniques, including task-based and resting-state functional MRI, brain morphometry, and diffusion tensor imaging. Here, we review recent research across these modalities, with a focus on participants with depression and Suicidal Thoughts and Behavior (STB). A PubMed search identified 149 articles specific to our population of study, and this was further refined to rule out more diffuse pathologies such as psychotic disorders and organic brain injury and illness. This left 69 articles which are reviewed in the current study. The collated articles reviewed point to a complex impairment showing atypical functional activation in areas associated with perception of reward, social/affective stimuli, top-down control, and reward-based learning. This is broadly supported by the atypical morphometric and diffusion-weighted alterations and, most significantly, in the network-based resting-state functional connectivity data that extrapolates network functions from well validated psychological paradigms using functional MRI analysis. We see an emerging picture of cognitive dysfunction evident in task-based and resting state fMRI and network neuroscience studies, likely preceded by structural changes best demonstrated in morphometric and diffusion-weighted studies. We propose a clinically-oriented chronology of the diathesis-stress model of suicide and link other areas of research that may be useful to the practicing clinician, while helping to advance the translational study of the neurobiology of suicide.

Resting-State Functional Magnetic Resonance Image to Analyze Electrical Biological Characteristics of Major Depressive Disorder Patients with Suicide Ideation. Abstract
The study was aimed to explore the brain imaging characteristics of major depressive disorder (MDD) patients with suicide ideation (SI) through resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) and to investigate the potential neurobiological role in the occurrence of SI. 50 MDD patients were selected as the experimental group and 50 healthy people as the control group. The brain images of the patients were obtained by MRI. Extraction of EEG biological features was from rs-fMRI images. Since MRI images were disturbed by noise, the initial clustering center of FCM was determined by particle swarm optimization algorithm so that the noise of the collected images was cleared by adaptive median filtering. Then, the image images were processed by the optimized model. The correlation between brain mALFF and clinical characteristics was analyzed. It was found that the segmentation model based on the FCM algorithm could effectively eliminate the noise points in the image; that the zALFF values of the right superior temporal gyrus (R-STG), left middle occipital gyrus (L-MOG), and left middle temporal gyrus (L-MTG) in the observation group were significantly higher than those in the control group (P < 0.05); and that the average zALFF values of left thalamus (L-THA) and left middle frontal gyrus (L-MFG) decreased. The mean zALFF values of L-MFG and L-SFG demonstrated good identification value for SI in MDD patients. In summary, MRI images based on FCM had a good convergence rate, and electrical biological characteristics of brain regions were abnormal in MDD patients with SI, which can be applied to the diagnosis and treatment of patients with depression in clinical practice.

Abstract
Depression is a highly prevalent psychiatric disorder affecting millions of people worldwide. Depression is characterized by decreased mood or loss of interest in daily activities, changes in feeding and circadian rhythms and significant impairments in cognitive and executive function. In addition, the occurrence of recurrent thoughts of death and suicidal ideation confers depressed patients a higher risk of suicide than the general population. With this study, we aimed to explore the neural correlates of suicidal ideation in drug-naïve patients diagnosed with depression. Twenty-five patients were scanned using two-different magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) modalities, resting state functional MRI (fMRI) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). Resting state allowed the exploration of connectivity patterns in the absence of a specific stimulus and DTI allowed a detailed analysis of structural white matter integrity with measures like fractional anisotropy (FA). Probabilistic independent component analysis (PICA), network-based statistics and tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) were applied to analyze resting-state fMRI and DTI data, respectively. Our results showed that, in our sample of drug-naïve patients, suicidal ideation was negatively associated with resting-state functional connectivity in the visual networks and with FA in the genu of corpus callosum and in the right anterior corona radiata. In addition, a significant association was identified between suicidal ideation and a functional connectivity network that included connections between regions in the superior and orbitofrontal cortex, the cerebellum, the cingulate gyrus as well as temporal and occipital regions. In conclusion, this work has expanded our knowledge about the possible functional and structural neuronal correlates of suicidal ideation in drug-naïve patients with depression, paving the way for future personalized therapeutic approaches.
