Abstract
Gut microbiota has been increasingly linked to metabolic health and diseases over the past few decades. Bile acids (BAs), the major components of bile, are bidirectionally linked to intestinal microbiota, also known as the gut microbiome-BA metabolic axis. Gut microbiota-derived bile salt hydrolase (BSH, EC 3.5.1.24), which catalyzes the "gateway" reaction in a wider pathway of bile acid modification, not only shapes the bile acid landscape, but also modulates the crosstalk between gut microbiota and host health. Therefore, microbial BSHs exhibit the potential to directly or indirectly influence microbial and host physiologies, and have been increasingly considered as promising targets for the modulation of gut microbiota to benefit animal and human health. However, their physiological functions in bacterial and host physiologies are still controversial and not clear. In this review, we mainly discuss the current evidence related to the physiological roles that BSHs played in gut microbiota and human health, and the possible underlying mechanisms. Meanwhile, we also present the potential applications of BSHs and BSH-producing probiotics in various fields. Finally, we describe several important questions that need to be addressed by further investigations. A detailed exploration of the physiological significance of BSHs will contribute to their future diagnostic and therapeutic applications in improving animal and human health.

Abstract
The modern livestock industry faces significant challenges due to the extension of production cycles and a growing shortage of feed resources. Low-protein (LP) diets offer potential environmental advantages whereas damage intestinal integrity and increase pro-inflammatory cytokines. Bile acids (BAs), metabolic products of cholesterol in the liver, possess strong antioxidative and immune properties. This study evaluated the effects of dietary porcine BA supplementation at different protein levels on the antioxidant status, immune function, and gut microbiota of late-laying hens. A 2 × 2 factorial design was employed with 198 Hy-Line Brown laying hens (62 weeks old), randomly divided into one of four treatment groups with 8 replicates for each treatment. Diets included normal (16.42%) or low-protein (15.35%) levels, with porcine BAs supplemented at 0 or 120 mg/kg (62-69 weeks) and 0 or 200 mg/kg (70-75 weeks) over 14 weeks. Dietary protein levels and bile acids had no effect on organ development in laying hens. Low-protein diets increased serum anti-inflammatory cytokines IL-4 and IL-10 but elevated pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1β (p < 0.05), corroborated by higher IL-10 gene expression in the ileum mucosa (p < 0.05). The supplementation of bile acids improved immune function by increasing serum IL-4 and TGF-β while decreasing IL-6 levels (p < 0.05). Moreover, bile acids treatments upregulated IL-10, TGF-β and ZO-1 gene expression in the ileum mucosa (p < 0.05) and alleviated oxidative stress by enhancing serum GSH-Px activity (p < 0.05). Additionally, both low-protein diets and bile acids enriched beneficial cecal bacteria, including Hungatella and Blautia, primarily linked to immune function. These findings demonstrate that porcine bile acids administration improve antioxidant capacity, immune function and gut microbiota dysbiosis. These beneficial effects were associated with Hungatella and Blautia levels, which may be responsible for the porcine bile acids efficacy in poultry nutrition.

Abstract
Fat is one of the three macronutrients and a significant energy source for piglets. It plays a positive role in maintaining intestinal health and improving production performance. During the weaning period, physiological, stress and diet-related factors influence the absorption of fat in piglets, leading to damage to the intestinal barrier, diarrhea and even death. Signaling pathways, such as fatty acid translocase (CD36), pregnane X receptor (PXR), and AMP-dependent protein kinase (AMPK), are responsible for regulating intestinal fat uptake and maintaining intestinal barrier function. Therefore, this review mainly elaborates on the reasons for diarrhea induced by insufficient fat absorption and related signaling pathways in weaned-piglets, with an emphasis on the intestinal fat absorption disorder. Moreover, we focus on introducing nutritional strategies that can promote intestinal fat absorption in piglets with insufficient fat absorption-related diarrhea, such as lipase, amino acids, and probiotics.

Abstract
The purpose of this trial was to study the positive effects of bile acids (BAs) on growth performance and intestinal health of rice field eel fed with high-lipid diets (HLDs). Rice field eels (initial weight 17.00 ± 0.10 g) were divided into four groups, each group containing four repetitions and feeding with different isonitrogenous diet: control diet containing 7% lipid content, HLDs containing the lipid content increased to 13%, HLDs supplementing with 0.025% BAs and 0.05% BAs, respectively. After 8 weeks, compared control group, the fish fed HLDs had no significant effect on weight gain rate and specific growth rate (P > 0.05), but increased the lipid deposition in tissues and intestinal lipase activity, and damaged to intestinal oxidative stress, inflammatory response, physical barrier, and structural integrity (P < 0.05). Dietary BAs significantly increased weight gain rate and specific growth rate in fish fed with HL diets (P < 0.05) and reduced feed conversation rate (P < 0.05). Further, the eels fed with BAs reduced the total lipid content in liver, muscle, and whole body (P < 0.05). Dietary BAs decreased the activity of intestinal lipase (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, BAs supplemented in HLDs improved intestinal antioxidant capacity through increasing the activities of T-SOD (total superoxide dismutase), GSH-PX (glutathione peroxidase), CAT (catalase), T-AOC (total antioxidant capacity), whereas reducing MDA (malondialdehyde) content (P < 0.05). Moreover, dietary BAs regulated the mRNA expression related to inflammatory response, oxidative stress, and physical barrier in intestine, such as tnf-α, il-8, tlr-8, il-10, nrf2, keap1, claudin12, and claudin15 (P < 0.05). Dietary BAs supplementation also enhanced the intestinal structural integrity characterized by increased fold height and lamina propria width (P < 0.05). This study showed that dietary BAs supplemented in HLDs (13% lipid) could increase the growth performance of rice field eel, reduce lipid deposition in tissues and whole body, and enhance intestinal health.

Abstract
Intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) can result in early liver oxidative damage and abnormal lipid metabolism in neonatal piglets. Ferulic acid (FA), a phenolic compound widely found in plants, has many biological functions, such as anti-inflammation and anti-oxidation. Thus, we explored the effects of dietary FA supplementation on antioxidant capacity and lipid metabolism in newborn piglets with IUGR. In the study, 24 7-day-old piglets were divided into three groups: normal birth weight (NBW), IUGR, and IUGR + FA. The NBW and IUGR groups were fed formula milk as a basal diet, while the IUGR + FA group was fed a basal diet supplemented with 100 mg/kg FA. The trial lasted 21 days. The results showed that IUGR decreased absolute liver weight, increased transaminase activity, reduced antioxidant capacity, and disrupted lipid metabolism in piglets. Dietary FA supplementation enhanced absolute liver weight, reduced serum MDA level and ROS concentrations in serum and liver, markedly increased serum and liver GSH-PX and T-SOD activities, decreased serum HDL-C and LDL-C and liver NEFA, and increased TG content and HL activity in the liver. The mRNA expression related to the Nrf2-Keap1 signaling pathway and lipid metabolism in liver were affected by IUGR. Supplementing FA improved the antioxidant capacity of liver by down-regulating Keap1 and up-regulating the mRNA expression of SOD1 and CAT, and regulated lipid metabolism by increasing the mRNA expression level of Fasn, Pparα, LPL, and CD36. In conclusion, the study suggests that FA supplementation can improve antioxidant capacity and alleviate lipid metabolism disorders in IUGR piglets.

Abstract
Intrauterine growth restriction in piglets has been a problem in the pig industry due to genetic selection based on hyperprolificacy. This has led to an increase in the number of underweight piglets and a worsening of the survival rate. The goal of this study was to enhance the knowledge of differences between normal and IUGR piglets a few hours after birth in terms of haematological variables, biochemical parameters, and immunoglobulin levels. Two groups of 20 piglets each were assessed. The control group (N) was made up of piglets with weights greater than 1500 g, and the IUGR group consisted of piglets weighing 500-1000 g and with at least two IUGR features. Blood samples were collected 72 h after birth for analysis of the red and white blood cell parameters, reticulocyte indices, platelet indices, biochemical parameters, and immunoglobulin levels. Alterations in red blood cells and reticulocytes, a lower lymphocyte count, hyperinsulinemia, and high oxidative stress were observed in IUGR piglets (p < 0.05). In contrast, differences were not observed (p > 0.05) in the serum immunoglobulin level. It can be concluded that the haematological and biochemical differences in IUGR piglets with respect to normal-weight piglets are present at birth indicating possible alterations in immunity, metabolism, and redox status; therefore, IUGR piglets could be more vulnerable to illness and future disorders, such as metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
Bile acids(BAs) are important components of bile and play a significant role in fat metabolism. However, there is currently no systematic evaluation of the use of BAs as feed additives for geese.This study aimed to investigate the effects of adding BAs to goose feed on growth performance, lipid metabolism, intestinal morphology, mucosal barrier function, and cecal microbiota. A total of 168 28-day-old geese were randomly assigned to four treatment groups and fed diets supplemented with 0, 75, 150, or 300 mg/kg of BAs for 28 days. The addition of 75 and 150 mg/kg of BAs significantly improved the feed/gain (F/G) (p < 0.05).The addition of BAs decreased abdominal fat percentage and serum total cholesterol (TC) levels, with 150 mg/kg of BAs significantly reducing serum triglyceride levels and increased expression of Farnesoid X Receptor (FXR) mRNA in the liver(p < 0.05), 300 mg/kg of BAs significantly increasing the expression level of liver peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα) (p < 0.05). In terms of intestinal morphology and mucosal barrier function, 150 mg/kg of BAs significantly increased villus height (VH) and VH/crypt depth (CD) in the jejunum (p < 0.05). The addition of 150 and 300 mg/kg of BAs significantly reduced the CD in the ileum, while increasing VH and VH/CD (p<0.05). Additionally, the addition of 150 and 300 mg/kg of BAs significantly increased the expression levels of zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1) and occludin in the jejunum. Simultaneously 150mg/kg and 300mg/kg BAs increased the total short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) concentrations in the jejunum and cecum(p < 0.05).Supplementation with BAs resulted in a significant increase in the ɑ-diversity of cecal microbiota and a decrease in the abundance of Proteobacteria in the cecum. The addition of 150 mg/kg of BAs significantly reduced the abundance of Bacteroidetes and increased the abundance of Firmicutes. Moreover,Linear discriminant analysis Effect Size analysis (LEfSe) showed that the abundances of bacteria producing SCFA and bile salt hydrolases (BSH) were increased in the BAs-treated group. Furthermore, Spearman's analysis showed that the genus Balutia, which is negatively correlated with visceral fat area, was positively correlated with serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), while Clostridium was positively correlated with intestinal VH and VH/CD. In conclusion, BAs can be considered an effective feed additive for geese, as they increased SCFA concentration, improve lipid metabolism and intestinal health by enhancing the intestinal mucosal barrier, improving intestinal morphology, and altering the cecal microbiota structure.

Abstract
The present experiment was conducted to study the effects of dietary epidermal growth factor (EGF) supplementation on the liver antioxidant capacity of piglets with intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR). The present study consists of two experiments. In experiment 1, six normal-birth-weight (NBW) and six IUGR newborn piglets were slaughtered within 2 to 4 h after birth to compare the effects of IUGR on the liver antioxidant capacity of newborn piglets. The results showed that compared with NBW piglets, IUGR piglets had a lower birth weight and liver relative weight; IUGR piglets had a higher serum malondialdehyde (MDA) level, liver MDA level and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) level, and had a lower liver total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) level and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity; IUGR trended to increase serum alanine aminotransferase activity, aspartate aminotransferase activity, and H2O2 level, and trended to decrease liver total superoxide dismutase activity. In experiment 2, six NBW piglets, and 12 IUGR piglets weaned at 21 d of age were randomly divided into the NC group (NBW piglets fed with basal diet); IC group (IUGR piglets fed with basal diet), and IE group (IUGR piglets fed with basal diet plus 2 mg/kg EGF), and feeding for 14 d. Organ index, serum parameters, liver antioxidant capacity, and liver antioxidant-related genes expression were measured. The results showed that compared to the IC group, dietary EGF supplementation (IE group) significantly reduced serum malondialdehyde level and H2O2 level, and liver protein carbonyl (PC) level and 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine level of piglets with IUGR; dietary EGF supplementation (IE group) significantly increased serum T-AOC level, liver T-AOC level and GSH-Px activity; dietary supplemented with EGF (IE group) enhanced liver Nrf2, NQO1, HO1, and GPX1 mRNA expression compared to IC group. Pearson's correlation analysis further showed that EGF can alleviate liver oxidative injury caused by IUGR and improve the performance of IUGR piglets. In conclusion, EGF exhibited potent protective effects on IUGR-induced liver oxidative injury, by activating the Nrf2 signaling pathway to mediate the expression of downstream antioxidant enzymes and phase II detoxification enzymes (NQO1 and HO1), thereby alleviating liver oxidative damage and promoting the growth performance of IUGR piglets.

Abstract
Piglets with intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) have poor small intestinal morphology and function, resulting in impaired digestion and absorption of nutrients and lower growth performance. Bile acids (BA) are important in regulating digestive enzyme activity, digestion and absorption of lipids, intestinal development, and protecting the liver. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of dietary BA supplementation on plasma biochemical and hormone indicators, intestinal morphology and function, and microbial community in piglets with normal birth weight (NBW) and IUGR. Weaned piglets (24 IUGR and 24 NBW) were allocated to four groups (12 piglets per group) and fed the following diets: (i) NBW group, NBW piglets fed a basal diet; (ii) NBW + BA group, NBW piglets fed a basal diet with 400 mg/kg BA; (iii) IUGR group, IUGR piglets fed a basal diet; and (iv) IUGR + BA group, IUGR piglets fed a basal diet with 400 mg/kg BA. The feeding trial lasted 28 days. The results showed that IUGR decreased the weight of the jejunum, whereas dietary BA supplementation decreased the jejunum weight and increased the length, weight, and index of ileum in NBW piglets (p < 0.05). In addition, IUGR increased (p < 0.05) the plasma choline esterase (CHE) and glucose levels of weaned piglets regardless of BA supplementation. Dietary BA supplementation increased the plasma albumin, triglyceride, and total protein concentrations while decreased plasma aspartate transaminase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), CHE, lactate dehydrogenase, and NH3 levels regardless of IUGR (p < 0.05). The IUGR increased trypsin level in the ileum, whereas dietary BA supplementation decreased jejunal trypsin and lipase and ileal lipase levels of weaned piglets regardless of IUGR (p < 0.05). Spearman’s correlation analysis revealed the potential link between the intestinal microbial community and intestinal health-related indices of weaned piglets. These findings suggest that IUGR could decrease small intestinal morphology and function, whereas dietary BA supplementation could promote the ileum development of NBW piglets, protect the liver by reducing plasma ALT and AST levels, and increase the proportion of potentially beneficial bacteria in the small intestine of NBW and IUGR piglets, contributing to intestinal development and health of weaned piglets.
