Bibliometric and visual analysis of nephrotoxicity research worldwide

Growing attention on the toxicity of Chinese herbal medicine: a bibliometric analysis from 2013 to 2022

Introduction: Despite the clinical value of Chinese herbal medicine (CHM), restricted comprehension of its toxicity limits the secure and efficacious application. Previous studies primarily focused on exploring specific toxicities within CHM, without providing an overview of CHM's toxicity. The absence of a quantitative assessment of focal points renders the future research trajectory ambiguous. Therefore, this study aimed to reveal research trends and areas of concern for the past decade. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on publications related to CHM and toxicity over the past decade from Web of Science Core Collection database. The characteristics of the publication included publication year, journal, institution, funding, keywords, and citation counts were recorded. Co-occurrence analysis and trend topic analysis based on bibliometric analysis were conducted on keywords and citations. Results: A total of 3,225 publications were analyzed. Number of annal publications increased over the years, with the highest number observed in 2022 (n = 475). The Journal of Ethnopharmacology published the most publications (n = 425). The most frequently used toxicity classifications in keywords were hepatotoxicity (n = 119) or drug-induced liver injury (n = 48), and nephrotoxicity (n = 40). Co-occurrence analysis revealed relatively loose connections between CHM and toxicity, and their derivatives. Keywords emerging from trend topic analysis for the past 3 years (2019-2022) included ferroptosis, NLRP3 inflammasome, machine learning, network pharmacology, traditional uses, and pharmacology. Conclusion: Concerns about the toxicity of CHM have increased in the past decade. However, there remains insufficient studies that directly explore the intersection of CHM and toxicity. Hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity, as the most concerned toxicity classifications associated with CHM, warrant more in-depth investigations. Apoptosis was the most concerned toxicological mechanism. As a recent increase in attention, exploring the mechanisms of ferroptosis in nephrotoxicity and NLRP3 inflammasome in hepatotoxicity could provide valuable insights. Machine learning and network pharmacology are potential methods for future studies.

Bibliometric Analysis and Systemic Review of Cantharidin Research Worldwide

BACKGROUND

Cantharidin (CTD), a natural toxic compound from blister beetle Mylabris, has been used for cancer treatment for millenary. CTD and its analogs have become mainstream adjuvant drugs with radiotherapy and chemotherapy in clinical applications. However, the detailed pharmacology mechanism of CTD was not fully elucidated.

METHODS

Publications of CTD were collected from the Web of Science Core Collection database from 1991 to 2023 using CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and Scimago Graphica software.

RESULTS

A total of 1,611 publications of CTD were mainly published in China and the United States. The University of Newcastle has published the most researches. Mcclusey, Adam, Sakoff, Jennette, and Zhang, Yalin had the most CTD publications with higher H. Notably, CTD researches were mainly published in Bioorganic & Medicinal Chemistry Letters and the Journal of Biological Chemistry. Cluster profile results revealed that protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A), human gallbladder carcinoma, Aidi injection, and cell apoptosis were the hotspots. Concentration on the pharmacology function of PP2A subunit regulation, hepatotoxicity, nephrotoxicity, and cardiotoxicity mechanism should be strengthened in the future.

CONCLUSION

Bibliometric analysis combined with a systemic review of CTD research first revealed that PP2A and CTD analogs were the knowledge base of CTD, and PP2A subunit regulation and toxic mechanism could be the frontiers of CTD.

Global trends and focuses of GLP-1RA in renal disease: a bibliometric analysis and visualization from 2005 to 2022

Glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonist (GLP-1RA) is a new class of glucose-lowing agents with the kidney benefit effect. This paper aims at finding the current state and hotspots of the research on GLP-1RA in kidney disease by using bibliometric methodologies and visualization maps to analyze publications and provide the direction for future studies on that topic. Literature information was obtained by retrieving the WoSCC database. Then, software like Microsoft Excel, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace was used to analyze and process obtained data. Bibliometric analysis and visualization of nations, authors, organizations, journals, keywords, and references were also done by VOSviewer and CiteSpace. A total of 991 publications written by 4747 authors from 1637 organizations in 75 countries on GLP-1RA in renal disease in Web of Science Core Collection were retrieved. The number of publications and citations kept growing from 2015 to 2022. The USA, Univ Copenhagen, and Rossing Peter are the leading country, organization, and author on this topic, respectively. All literature was published in 346 journals, and DIABETES OBESITY & METABOLISM is the journal with the most contributions. Meanwhile, most references are from DIABETES CARE. "Cardiovascular outcome" is the most frequent keyword in the total publications, and the reference cited most times is "Liraglutide and Cardiovascular Outcomes in Type 2 Diabetes" by Marso SP. The topic of GLP-1RA in renal disease has attracted more and more attention all over the world. Existing studies are mainly about clinical use in patients with diabetes, and studies on the mechanism are lacking.
